View Full Version : New member - Oil temp Question
After 12 months of scouring PH classifieds I picked up my SG CSL last week
First chance to take her out for some spirited driving last night. WHAT A NOISE! Raucous doesnt come close! Ive just come from a standard M3 and the difference is unreal.
Anyway after getting her nicely up to temp I gave it the beans on more than one occasion and was surprised, if not a little concerned, to notice the oil temp gauge had risen to 100 after a few minutes. Is this normal? I backed off and took her home with wind slightly taken out of my sails :(
Can any of you gents shed some light on where the oil temp gauge normally sits when you're out on the roads and even out on track.
Cheers
Dan

Hmmmmm its normal for the car to show this, but im not convinced its good for the car. My cars regularly showed 125 on track and if I am honest it did get me thinking.
I am going to fit a tropical thermostat to see if I can keep the oil temps lower on track. 125 is too hot for my liking. No wonder they run 10-60. 10-40 would be like cats piss at them temps.

Mines never been 125 on the track, it was a warm day at croft and I did limit the laps to 10 or less but the highest temp I saw was just over the 100, normal for me on the road is just under 100 when driving as the M division intended.
Nevertheless I changed the oil and filter at the weekend mid way between services, looking at the state of it, I'm glad I didn't leave it another 6k.

Oil temps worry me a bit too but the car still runs fine, when you take measurements from the oil lines to the cooler it is miles colder than the BMW ECU reports over CAN.
Example - note the difference a couple of gentler short shifting laps make.

Normal 'Yes' but not ideal :bigcry: which necessitates additional oil & filter changes in between scheduled services.
One good "tale tale" sign of a well used 10W60 Castrol Edge is an obvious smell of fuel in oil as it becomes saturated.

Or you have bore wash. Or faulty fuel pressure reg. Or faulty injector over injecting. Or driving on cold start cycle too often. Or piston ring damage.
Or a shit remap, what power is yours running again Matt?:smokin:

PS Shane - above figures (max 154 degrees) was with a different thermostat, I think the sensors are just rubbish to be honest.

Or you have bore wash. Unknown :smt017
Or faulty fuel pressure reg or faulty injector over injecting. Both checked @ BMW when NEW Fuel pump was fitted :smokin:
Or driving on cold start cycle too often. Not possible as it's a weekend toy used on long drives in the summer months only :blalalala:
Or piston ring damage. Full compression and leak down test carried out by BMW very recently :smokin: all within OEM speck according to Gareth
Or a shit remap, what power is yours running again Matt?:smokin: I'd love to see U say that to Rob's face @ DMS  FYI, my CSL is running stock power :smokin:

Mine runs at 125 on the Track in the summer at Silverstone and Bretagne cannot remember what its runs on the road but never worried about it so must be about the 100 mark
