CSL Warranty & Service Intervals

Hi guys,

Just a little bit stressed as its been around 2 years and 1-2 weeks since I last had my car serviced.

Last thing was Inspection 2 in September 2009 and haven't covered enough miles to trip the next service. However i just remembered that they should be done every 2 years.

My warranty has also run out and it states:

I can confirm that my vehicle has been fully serviced in accordance with the manufacturing recommendations/intervals and has not been modified in anyway.

If i get my next service in 2 years and 2 months will that be a problem for BMW warranty do you think?

Same here! But the mileage on my car since the last service (which was an Insp II in July 2009) is so low that the service indicator still reads nearly 8.5K miles to the next Oil Service!!!

Had to give my mileage to the warranty company for my renewal just a couple of weeks ago (which started on the 27th September)...no mention made of this.

I felt reasonably positive about keeping the car late this afternoon...After reading this 'aggro' I'm now beginning to feel a bit 'aggravated' again and feel like I ought to just sell it now. :smt085

Not an ideal situation but I am sure if you had not completed the services strictly to the schedule but had only covered a few thousand miles I cannot see how the warranty company would fare in court if they turned down a claim.

I say this only as I have had my CSL for four years and covered only 6,000 miles along with a warranty to boot. It obviously grips my sh#t a little.

yeah it reads 8000 miles to next oil service but havent had a service for 2 years 1 month. I guess i should do the oil service asap but just wondering if it will affect my warranty

I've had a think about this overnight....

AT THE VERY VERY WORST (and I think they'd have to be 'stretching it') this is in someways similar to having a late running-in service...which my car also had.

Having discussed that here in the past and then pressed Mondial on the exact consequences of this in relation to the warranty (they have afterall been only too willing to take your money for the warranty?) the answer I got was that it would ONLY effect the warranty if it were for a claim on an issue DIRECTLY relating to the fact that it had a late running-in service and one could extrapolate in this case an "oil change" later than two years. That would therefore only be some form of 'engine mechanical failure' directly attributable to a late "oil change". In this case Mondial informed that any claim would then have to be "considered on an individual basis".

All other claims for anything else should be covered...as they have always been on my car ( I have 5 pages of warranty claims/recalls in my service documents) e.g during my ownership I had BOTH rear coil springs replaced under warranty when I noticed that one was snapped. In passing, I also mentioned that the CD Player occasionally made a slight whirry noise...and that was immediately entirely replaced for a brand new one.

As your and my cars are both low mileage cars which also haven't covered many miles at all since the last Insp II service such an eventuality/failure would seem to be highly unlikely? Thus I wouldn't really worry about it too much.

The wording in the Service Booklet is interesting though. It only mentions "changing the oil". Nothing about changing the oil filter and specifically it doesn't actually call it an "Oil Service". Thus I think it's important when you get the oil changed that you don't get the dealer to stamp your book as "an Oil Service" (or then only marked as an interim). More importantly perhaps I would think it's wise NOT to get them to re-set your service indicator on the car. Otherwise you'll have effectively LOST those 8000 miles that you had 'in hand' and your next Service will be a much more expensive Insp I !!! One could see a scenario otherwise where one could do very, very few miles but end up going through a repetitious and expensive cycle of Oil-Insp I-Oil-Insp II etc etc And in actuality the car will have done nothing like the miles it should have to have justified this intensity of servicing! :smt118

Read you owners manual as it says in there, (think it's on page 126)

that oil should be changed at least every 2 years regardless of what the service indicator says, as oil deteriorates with time irrespective of mileage.

If you have an engine issue and had not followed this routine then you could have an issue with the warranty, or at least you would be giving them a possible out.

All true. It does give them a possible out, for an issue which could be attributed to the late oil change.

But from my direct experience, BMW warranty are quite sensible about this, and do not use this specific issue (over 2 years between oil changes, but mileage very low hence not beyond the service indicator intervals) to wriggle out of claims.

So I reckon that, as things stand, the OP has a theoretical problem but it won't be an issue in practice. Should do the service ASAP though, in my view.

Can i ask why you guys let it go more than 2 years before you thought about changing the oil.

Well, to be honest, in my case the reason is that I've only owned the car for about 8 months, have only driven it 500 miles in that time and as the service indicator was/is still reading nearly 8500 miles to go to the next Oil Service I didn't even think to read through all the minutiae of the service handbook. It literally didn't even cross my mind until I read the OP's post.

In fact, I've never even considered or bothered to read and notice this in any of the BMW Handbooks that I've had in 30 years of unbroken BMW ownership. So...interestingly...I've just read what it says in the handbook to my 8-Series and it says "every year". Yet of further interest the documentation that comes with my E34 540i (same engine remember) makes absolutely no mention of this! Then my wife's E39 528i Touring handbook again says: "every year".

Bollocks to all that! None of those cars are under warranty...and the 840 and the 540 are driven so infrequently and in fact I have had the oil changed but more like 2 yearly...not because I thought it should be because of what it says in the handbook...but I just 'felt' instinctively it should be.

Anyway, I'll get the CSL booked in for an oil change next week...two months late over the "2 Years" but I can hardly see how that's an issue when the car hasn't been driven?

I really need to get out in it more...this is turning out to be "all work and no play!" :hahaha:

The reason i've not done it is that im always out of the country and had the car in storage so honestly have not found the time to take it out and do an oil service.

derin100 can you let me know what they say when you book yours in? I'll be doing my service in around 2 weeks, so also 2 years 2 months late... Although i didn't understand why I shouldn't get it stamped as an "oil service"?

I live in central london so would do my oil service at BMW Park Lane which costs £238.50 !!!!! :banghead:

My car had Inspection I on 19-03-09 (13219)and Oil service on 09-03-11 (13926), when is Inspection II due ? or will the car tell me. :thumbs:

On mileage the car tells you ( as you turn on ignition) but it will be at around 25000 miles I guess.

Otherwise it wil be before two years from last service

Thanks Shimmy, will be doing oil change in New Year as done a few track days so fresh Oil for next season. :thumbs:
