The diff oil BMW will sell you should have the FM Booster in it nowdays I believe.
My diff was groaning back at the beginning of the year so I changed my fluid, it's been fine ever since.

Thanks phoenix ,
Hope this resolves it and the possible lack of fluid has done no damage to the diff .will post the outcome in next few days really appreciate your reply thanks;)

No worries, hope the leaking hasn't damaged your diff, i've not had that so can't comment if they are related, fingers crossed for you that they are not!

very true, very common thing. point to note if anybody does it themselfs. make sure they sell you the proper diff oil with the extra additive in it! before changing the oil get the diff oil warm. once the new oil is in you need to go to a empty car park and do 20 full circles on full lock then 20 full circles the other way on full lock. then take the car for a good run and give the diff a good working out. it will take roughly 1000km (600 miles) before the oil works it way properly into the friction plates.
