Hi gents,
I was driving my car quite hard yesterday and when I took off (no launch control involved) and was about to shift from 1st into 2nd at the "yellow zone", the SMG autoshifted itself into the 2nd for me and I felt that I lost a bit of grunt during the "autoshift".... the transition felt that I hit the rev limiter (but I was 100% certain that I didn't and the rev never bounced around the redline)... I actually clicked the upshift straight after it was changed.... and it felt really weird....
The funny thing is.. this is not the 1st time already... it happened once in S3 mode as well 2 weeks back.... does anyone have similar experience about this??? I thought S mode is a fully manual mode?
Thanx heaps!
cheers,
richie

S mode IS fully manual (upshifting) and should never auto upshift (exception - Launch Control does). Are you 100% sure weren't in A and then switched to S when you flicked the upshift?

s mode will upshift if you red line it it wont blow its self up

No it doesn't, it just sits bouncing off the limiter.

I am 100% sure... because I never put it in the auto mode... so I guess Mark has the same experience as what I have got then... my engine didn't bounce even once at the rev limiter... it just went straight into the 2nd gear and I could sort of feel a bit of power loss in between the gear change... if I changed it myself, I wouldn't have felt any power loss...
My CSL is a de-limited CSL, don't know if that makes any diff?
cheers,
richie

Well it starts in the A mode, that's why I asked (ie, you don't have to "put it in auto").
It definitely will not auto-upshift in S, ever. Not even seen it mentioned as a 'bug' before now - and we're 5 years down the line.
It certainly sounds like it was in A, but you thought it was in S so you didn't expect the change. Then you change with the paddle and it switches to S.
Delimited makes no difference - it will not auto upshift in S (unless it's faulty but never heard of any faults like that during these 5 years).

yes... 100% sure that it was in S.... an extra tab to the right to get into the S mode.... and I do that every time I get into the car, and never touch the leveler again from there onwards...
I might ask BMW to check it out for me then.... because it has happened twice already...
thanx heaps mate!

Well if you read the manual it said it will up shift to stop any damage
as well as it wont downshift if you are going to fast for the gear

I suggest everyone takes out their manual and looks at the note at the bottom of page#57, and I quote "No automatic upshifts occur in the sequential mode"
I then invite you to drive down the road in S and avoid doing an upshift at the redline - see what happens ;)
I've had this CSL since Aug 2003, and I've been driving SMGII since Feb 2002, so I do have a fair understanding of it's operation
* exception - as I mentioned before - only in Launch Control mode does it auto upshift on the CSL (which is technically an S mode).

... and also the top of page#19 of the seperate SMGII supplement manual.

Mine certainly did that a few times on track at the weekend!

It may be me but why would you redline it and have it bouncing on the redline :banghead:

just to try out the smg to see if she auto shifts?
or because on track you get to a corner but it is not enough space to upshift
or because you forgot to look at the RPMs
or because you haev leant the car to the wife and she is waiting for it to auto change!
all possible
