I've got my CSL in at BMW at the moment having engine work done. It had an inspection 2 about 4-5k miles ago, i've just been to the ring and spa (both amazing :) ) but the engine started to rattle a bit on the way back so i booked it in with BMW thinking it was the tappits needing readjusting it turns out it has worn camshafts and rockers as well. Its done 56k miles never been used on track until I used it and always serviced at BMW.
Would you have expected BMW to have spotted the wear on the cams etc when readjusting the tappits at the inspection 2 service? and is this a common problem?

Quite a few higher miles ones with no similar issues, seems strange thing to wear under 100k miles

I wish i did have warranty :bigcry: but still waiting for the rocker arms to come in from BMW germany who won't have any stock until Friday.
Do BMW normally have no stock of these parts?

Hi,
I would be asking for the return of Both
Camshafts and the foillowers without
fail.
You will be able to see the wear on worn
Camshafts and fingers.
One thing that might have caused this
is low Oil Pressure at some point or
the Use of the wrong oil.
S54 can be prone to excessive top end wear if it
does not obtain enough of the correct oil.
Regards,
The Gorilla.

I'm guessing there is an oil starvation issue

It has always been serviced at BMW so i assume it has always had the correct oil in it although I can never be sure of this. BMW are telling me that the wear rate has been increase by the previous owner putting some sound deadening on the underside of the bonnet (why you'd want to hear less of that noise is beyond me!) which has increased the temperature at the top of the engine.
I don't know how long this sound deadening has been fitted but it was only 5k miles since it had the inspection 2 and i would have expected them to have noticed any wear at that point. It can't have worn to that extent in that time?
My only other thought is that it has been run with low oil at some point in the past, but again find this out is almost impossible.

Sounds like BMW fobbing you off, as your car is under 60k miles and has been serviced to schedule I would ask the dealer (Or another more helpful dealer) to approach BMW for goodwill. It is premature wear after all
Oh and get the sound deadening removed...

If it's top end wear I'd get them to change out the CPV (constant pressure valve). If the dealer doesn't know what the hell you are talking about I'd change dealership immediately. Look for leaks around it, any minute signs of oil means it has failed and you will need to change it.

Hi,
I would ask for what the Dealer has told
you regarding the Bonnet Insulation to be
put into writing and then send a copy to BMW UK.
I would then ask BMW UK if they agree and accept
that they continued, via the dealer to service a Car and yet did
not once insist that the extra Bonnet Insulation
should be removed or that problems could
ensue due to it being fitted [previous owner].
Their ''get out of warranty Claims'' due to vehicle modifications
supports your case.
If they both say yes, which from what you have said
is the only possible answer, and offer no goodwill
with regard to what they diagnose is wrong,
[yet to be confirmed]
then I would inform BMW UK that you are going
to consult with Legal representation and pursue
a claim if made to pay for the work/parts.
They were happy to service the Car with the Insulation
in place and take the money, but now a problem
has been diagnosed, topend, which they allege the cause
of the problem is the Bonnet Insulation.
Dealer/BMW can not have it both ways.
I would also write to the dealer stating that you want
the return of any replaced components given the
circumstances, make sure you do this before they
start any work.

The Gorilla.

I have seen this on 1 other csl and he didnt have additional sound deadening , he was lucky and only had 4 worn rocker arms cams looked fine , does seem to be a oil starvation fault and again it only happened after tracking at the ring , as previously mentioned oil pressure valve is well worth a check located nsr of block ( looks like a large flat head screw ) if oil level in engine was low / not saying it was , then with the constant hard cornering that could cause it . It is the norm for rockers and cams to be on back order due to age of car . Dealer should apply for goodwill with full history hopefully you should get a resault.
Regards Gareth

I am really surprised that a BMW dealer can claim that the bonnet insulation can cause engine wear.
That's probably the most ridiculous thing I ever heard about a car issue.

The same insulation that the normal M3 comes with?
Sure the car hasn't been crashed and had a new bonnet? </runs>

Well i'm still waiting for the rocker arms to turn up, the dealer tell me it could be 1 month or it could be 3 months and they don't know yet! :bigcry: They've hired me a car until they turn up whch is ok (120d M sport) but the cost to BMW must be massive, not that i'm too concerned about this.
I'm used to these part supply problems with small companies such as Caterham but would have expected better from BMW

Thats great news, BMW finally catching up, at least you didn't have the V8 so the CSL won't feel ancient when you get in it
