Folks, how do you tell if it's about to fail?

Well when its about to fail, everything looks ok, then when it's failed (1-12 years later), everything is fucked up!

I keep a dustbin lid over the centre consul at all times.:)

I had it last year with the mirror of my CS, the car was parked for a few hours when it was sunny weather & 30 degrees outside, when I came back it had leaked on the plastic of the SMG. So I had to change the mirror & the plastic :bigcry:
They told me when the mirror reaches high temperatures it happens easily.

It does seem t happen to cars that are parked outside more

Mine had a yellow patch in the centre of the mirror, about the size of a 50 pence piece. No external leak, but a leak within the unit itself.

Followed the advice on an M3 forum and sent mine to the original manufacturer - an electronics factory in the US - they refurbished it within two weeks to new condition for less than A$200. A replacement is over $1000.

Right, I've got a bit spooked by this as been hearing of a few more occurrences lately. Took the mirror out last night, even though it's not showing any signs of leaking, and going to send it off to this crowd I think for a bit of preventitive work: http://www.radar-mirror.com/Mirror_Repair.html

Will update when I get it back on how it went

Forgot to update this, as only getting the car back out on the road now. Can highly recommend this crowd I used, got the mirror back within 2 weeks, and cost $135 incl P&P back to Europe

Anyone have experience of these guys?

Quick turnaround and reasonable price by the looks of it.

My mirror is beginning to show signs of failure (irregular dimming) so need to do something soon.

With 7,634 sales and a 100% positive feedback they must be doing something right!
I already have them penciled in, just in case the inevitable happens and it goes pop at some point!

I used these guys (kazza-tech) on ebay.

Very professional service, sent the mirror on Monday and had it back by Friday.

for £120 I would definitely recommend them. especially if you don't want to get a soldering iron out yourself.

I've just refitted my mirror after using this guy. The service was excellent and I would highly recommend it to anyone who thinks their mirror is on the way out.

Also just to add...he mentioned that he does a slightly discounted rate to forum members so best to mention that if you email him john [at] mirrorjohn [dot] com

The oval mirror as fitted to the CSL is no longer available (again Williams) they will fit the later model rectangular one under warranty. Good job you didn't get them to replace it! ;)

I think I might take mine off, it has a small oval shape in the middle of the mirror? Same shape as the mirror, smack bang in the middle about 50mm, maybe a bit less across. I put some plastic bags round it before it went in the carcoon. Feeling I should take it off just in case.

Covered but left the f-ing thing in the car. I didn't think it would melt the plastic and thought plastic bags would do :clown:

I had the oval shape appear in my mirror and based on all the horror stories was dreading the mirror leaking its corrosive liquid on to the centre console and SMG surround.

Was planning to be near the Southampton area so arranged to go to John's house so that he could replace the mirror there and then. John's a real M3 enthusiast with his own E46 M3 and a soft spot for CSLs, cannot recommended highly enough. The replacement was done conscientiously and worked great straight away. For those who have better DIY skills than me (so everyone basically), the mirrorjohn website has detailed instructions on options and fitting.

Interestingly my mirror dimming function never worked since i have got the car, 4 years ago. I have read that this is usually the sign for a failing mirror.. but i dont have any bubbles or leaks of course. :smt017

I suddenly noticed my mirror glass had an air bubble at the top a couple of weeks ago. Took all of your advice and got it out quickly.

I used the Mirror John replacement service, using the DIY videos it was pretty quick and easy to sort. Highly recommended.

Mine went last weekend, car has done 2,100km and rarely sees the light of day, but was entered in a car show on a hot day and it leaked all over the gear lever surround and fortunately did not damage the carbon console directly.

So it lasted 20 years, but had no warning at all prior to failure.

FYI, 433mhz mirrors are out of stock with BMW and doubtful that they will be available again.
