The Navman gave up a while back and although it did the job it never got updated once, leading me to some dodgy back passages at times! :hahaha:

Anyway a noo one is on the 'To Buy List' atm and Im well out of date with em all now.

What you got? what would you recommend & why? I'm kinda hoping one of you works part time in Halfrauds and knows what they are talking about!?

Pref: Speed Cam detect/ European Map

Talk to me!!

I've used Garmin and Tom Tom units.

I much prefer the Garmin for it's display, touch screen sensitivity and user friendly menus.

Ta G-dog I may consider the Garmin route

Judging by the response from the rest of ya... I'm guessing your all old and still get out your ancient maps, Ay!? :clown:

+1 with the G-dog regarding the Garmin  I've had mine now for ages it's still all good so I just keep updating it with New maps :smokin:
Also it's quite handy for occasional V-maxing solutions

Map? Didn't Sir Walter Raleigh use one of those?

If you haven't got one, my recommendation is an iPhone and a decent cradle. That way, you get a decent phone that you can put TomTom on. Particularly useful is being able to navigate to contacts.

That said, i've never tried Garmin. The one thing I don't like about TomTom is the lack of Itinerary Planning (being able to plan a route with a series of waypoints) - useful on a blast through the countryside when you want to use specific roads. Other than that, the interface is great.

I love my TomTom Live. Kept up to date and it's so good for camera points, fav speed camera van sites and brill for suggested re-routing to avoid traffic. Saved me some hours clearing me past horrible traffic.

Garmin here, the sucker mount fits straight onto the poof mirror on the back of the sun visor in the CSL , so I attach mine there, perfect for me as Im a short sighted bastard, so wear the glasses for driving , but can look up over them at the satnav at close range , works perfect for me !

I have got a couple of Snoopers. Strato which is a bit plasticy and rubbish battery life, but the Syrius is superb, solid and last hours.

Both been superseded but worth looking at the new ones.

I like the idea of IPhone for sat nav, data logger, phone, email, Internet, porn, shopping, credit card, banking, ...................................

Cheers all. iPhone I have but I'd prefer phone & Nav to be kept separate. I like the sound of the Garmin, so Garmin it may be! Nice V-Max extra too.

I'd advise that you always give Garmin preference over TomTom. I'm on a second satnav unit and each one seems to be a complete waste of money.

I've just come back from my Euro trip and i had nothing but problems with tomtom. A few months old unit with at least 3 year old maps (i did updates and paid for extra services on it) crap touch screen sensitivity and long distance route planning - also crap.

I will never, ever buy tomtom again.

I used tomtom last month to travel from UK to 13 cities in Europe. The unit got me there everytime (In a Lexus LS not the CSL :hahaha:)

Locations:

1. Brussels
2. Germany (Nurburgring)
3. Prague
4. Vienna
5. Venice
6. Milan
7. Zurich
8. Geneva
9. Menton
10. Marseille
11. Barcelona
12. Bordeaux
13. Paris

I had the latest Western Europe map.

I also used Aura on my mobile whilst in these cities to navigate whilst on foot and sometimes in the car. Its was flawless.

It did get a little confusing when the motorway exits had sub exits and the instructions really got confusing, but I just need to double check the signs to avoid confusion.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Oh, the unit was purchased in the states with the US map, but I re flashed it with the Western Europe maps.

P.S. The tomtom unit did inform me of traffic jams and alternative routes, not perfect as I still managed to get into a jam in France due to an overturned vehicle on my way to the eurotunnel.

i have also did all updates etc. and i.e. London - how many times the satnav tried to guide me through a dead end road or asked me to be in a left lane and then shows me a right turn on round about and countless other similar incidents. Yes, there are days that it guides me flawlessly but when it gets it wrong, it does big time like on my Euro trip. I drove on new roads (about 3 years old) and it totally got confused. On new motorways, i used paper map to navigate. USELESS as is the HD trafic service. Waste of money. Waste of time.

Have found my TomTom brilliant, both here and abroad. It's a few years old, not the latest HD type.

In Rutty's case I think it must be user error. ;)
