...a Mk5 Golf GTI.

DSG, Shadow Blue, 18" wheels, Leather, Nav, 20,000 miles.

200bhp :hahaha:

It's not a bad car and it's something the mrs can drive whilst I save for my next CSL :smokin:

I almost bought an edition 30.

I still might, next full on track slag for me.

I am not taking the e92 too far, keeping it nice and "roady" if thats a word:hahaha:

The golf gti's are awesome cars.

The edition 30's are tuneable to 350bhp and more, due to the bigger turbo,

Ex, filter, intercooler, fuel pump, remap see's 350+bhp.

My CSL, did 21 sec 30-130mph, an edition 30@ 340 bhp did 16 sec 30-130 so they are no slouch either.

Obviously the CSL will be better through the corners.

Good choice.

Cheers Lawsy, was after an Ed 30 not only for the bigger turbo/more power but I prefered the look of them (bumpers etc) over the standard GTI. However had to keep it insurable for the mrs and Ed30 insurance doubled :banghead:

Yes :hahaha: it's a lovely gearbox, not quite as manual as I would like in manual mode (for example it still changes up for you) however that can be fixed with a £200 DSG Remap what what I have read.
It's super quick and super smooth, do miss the aggressiveness of the SMG change but it's much much quicker and makes a nice noise on every change :hahaha:
Ian, I'll pop to an event in the near future and you can have a gander/try the gearbox.

Nathan, nice mate!! Lovely cars the Edition 30s.

I got an ED 30 for the Mrs. last year - stonking car, 310 BHP remap and huge amounts of torque. It matches the RS4 up to about 110 MPH.

I used to have an Ed30 too. I thought it was a great little car and I'd definitely recommend one to anyone that interested.

I found the DSG a bit annoying to be honest. It was great in full auto whilst pottering around town but not so much when you were properly on it and anything inbetween. Didn't like that whole changing up gear for you too. SMG might not be as smooth but I think I definitely prefer it.

based on what criteria?

Speed of gearchange, smoothness, automode that isn't utterly useless.

Having said that it is possible to wrong foot it, if you are in 4th and it thinks you will want to upshift next then it will have 5th preselected, if you then ask for 3rd it slows down to SMG type speeds as it has to disengage one gear before giving you the next.

Remapping the box will stop the auto upshift at the redline (and move the redline up of you wish) as well as giving more aggressive launch control and bigger blips.

speed of gearchange - big problems in america.... DCT II will be the proper one.

Servicing the DCT out of warranty - ring up you local dealer.... if you thought SMG was expensive, DCt is mega money in comparison...

How do you change clutch in DCT gearbox? ;)

If I ever decide to fit dct to my vw then I will note your concerns.

i meant Dual Clutch Transmissions - whatever name they go by outside of BMW, the core principle is the dual clutch... Direct Shift Gearbox has 6 gears though, isn't it?

These gearboxes are still not perfect... and it isnot just software i am talking about.

Rutowski- do you like making arguments?

I made a tongue in cheek remark about the smg and then it turns into a shitfest.

The DSG is a far quicker box, dct is too end off. Does that make it better than smg? No, just makes it quicker. Its down to the end user as to what is better.

And a side note, I suppose nobody has had smg issues?

The CSL is the best car I have owned and I loved the SMG, perfect for driver interaction. Awesome and comes into its own on track.
I have owned GTR, M3 DCT, DSG audi's etc and whilst being leagues ahead in performance terms they lack the interaction the SMG seems to give.

Back to the op and DSG. Yes you can remap to stop auto upshifts, and its the first thing I would do. My pork turbo used to auto upshift even in manual mode, coming out of a 2nd gear corner bit of a slide, nice slide, spin up a little, redline, upshift into 3rd, then bog down:banghead:

Just make sure its had its dsg oil and filter@ 40k,

If a lightweight, interactive single clutch paddleshift box is good enough for the new Lambo Aventador it'll do me ;-)

Might feel differently if my CSL was a daily driver and I was doing quite a few miles in it.

So i can't question comments? It's a discussion forum Last time i checked.

I loved DCT In an M3 - No doubting the gearchange ability - It's bloody quick but this technology is still far from perfect.

I'm the kind of guy That likes to hear both sides of the story so i Will question statements... If only to try And learn from others.

As always, i mean NO harm. :)

You still on about DCT in a VW thread  Clutch pack on a DSG box ain't 7k I can assure you.

You can uprate the clutches in a VW DSG box without changing the whole box, there are people who have done that to run 550bhp+ in turbo 3.2 v6s. If you are running sensible torque levels (remember these boxes are used in the diesels too) then the oem clutches are considered to last the lifetime of the box. They are wet clutches and not subject to the same wear as dry clutches

PS. Warranty is same company as BMW, named component zero excess with roadside assist is something silly like £330 a year so no real worries anyway.
