View Full Version : Cog of doom and a win for ADAC

Typical. Not more than 5 miles from my house and I get the cog of doom warning light, no accelerator and I coast to a stop and stall. Car is locked in 4th.
I did the sneaky a while back and got adac cover which bizarrely is cheaper than the AA in the UK, but includes AA cover in the UK as well as europe plus 'ring recovery ;-)
10 mins later got a text from Ontime Recovery saying they've been handed my case from the AA.
So now I'm waiting. A good opportunity to give some thought as to what the repair bill will likely be. Luckily or unluckily I have a bmw dealer 2 miles up the road from me, so I'll just have it taken there. Can't do much with it stuck in 4th on my drive, and I doubt a battery disconnect will help.
So - the salmon relay? SMG pump? Who knows eh.
Its my fault cos I went out for a blast today and was really loving the SMG 'box. I know more modern cars have smoother and faster transmission, but the SMG on an E46 really is excellent. When its working ;-)

Bummer :smt087 Great timing as well ehy ? I presume you don't have BMW Warranty, do you ? I hope the Main Steeler OnTime are recovering you to is a good one as most will try to flees you something rotten.
Can you not get it recovered to Murketts BMW up the A1M ? failing that BMW Park Lane are also CSL friendly ;) and a lot closer to you then Murketts I'm guessing.

Never had that Titan, not yet anyway. I've had missed gears 3-4 and they gave me a new box, but yours sounds like controls rather than box if I was to guess.
Try to disconnct battery and reconnect see if it frees up.
I have a relay somewhere but never used it yet!

no point in panicing just now. It can really be something minor.. maybe a compression spring?

It got dropped off at my local main stealer today. In goes the diagnostics and out comes the bill for a new SMG pump.
Nothing much can be done about that. Sure, I guess someone could source a recon pump and an independant garage could fit it etc etc but its difficult to move a car with the rear wheels locked.
£2.5k all in I think he said. Probably outrageous but when its immovable I'm over a barrel ;-)

Another Ouch! and double bugger :119: it's a timely reminder for those of us with BMW Warranty to keep it all paid up and up to date :smt083
I hope she's back to rude health after this little hick up

I'm not sure how many miles you car has done Titan but if you dealer is worth his salt he'll be asking for goodwill from BMW for this. I know dealers that would straight away.
I got a clutch and gearbox on goodwill at 45k miles and 70k miles (clutch only) and paid just half labour, zero parts and got 2 year parts warranty.
Give it a go or change dealers. They will want the work.

BUT when I said it was ADAC they transferred me to Germany where the guy logged the breakdown, then he passed the file to the AA who palmed it off to a local firm. All worked though, can't grumble.

52k miles. I don't know the warranty history of the car but of course from the dealers' perspective they are looking at an M3 with ridiculous brakes, suspension, seats/cage/harnesses, track wheels etc. It just screams "abused" and therefore most likely not covered. I'll ask though, doesn't hurt :)

It's SMG, you can't abuse it!

Righto all sorted, albeit with a "wee" <cough>£2375 injection of cash.
A number of points to raise
1. All you guys with warranties. Thats great, if your car looks like it did when it was in the showroom. Mine screams track car and everyone knows a warranty claim on a modified car is laughable.
2. "Good will", I did ask and was told "er..no chance. On a 2003 yr car??". The dealer did put in a call though and right enough, got zip.
Old basic cars can be cheap and reliable. Old cars with gadgets, not always so ;-)
They also changed the "salmon relay" for me as that had some signs of scorching. A £4.50 part, wish it was *just* that eh.

I would go mental if I had a claim and the dealer said no.
1. they would have to prove it's been used as a track car, which I think they would struggle with
and
2. all the parts you list are modifications that would not effect SMG transmission operation
luckily the dealer most of the guys use know the common faults found on the CSL and are very good at justifying it to BMW warranty claims

Like everything in life, its not what you know, its who you know.
You have a shit dealer end of.
Those with mods have a good dealer:thumbs:
I had a few warranty claims on mine. KW coilovers, Alcons all round, exhaust, race seats with harnesses. track wheels with track tyres. All fine.
PS I have a brand new set of XP10's here to fit your Alcons, 200 notes if your interested
