Ok, so im still in the process of buying a csl. I have seen one but it has a 'third party warranty' for twelve months.
The dealer says that you can have up to 5k of claims in one year?? i suppose i need to find out who they are and give them a call.

Any thoughts on third party warrantys??

I had a warranty direct policy on my M3 e36 and the Vanos went
and they did not cover any thing like that.

I will never have an other warranty unless it was BMW

But if the car is cheap then dont worry about it but i would always
buy a bmw with warranty before after market warranty

Watch the small print. As Mark has said they don't always cover what you need to be covered.

I think you can only buy one if the BMW warrenty has not run out yet...or unless you are buying from a BMW dealer and get one with the car. Don't think you can get one if the original or extended has run out but I'm sure Mark 'the fountain of all knowledge' CSL will know.

If you have a friendly bmw garage they may source the car for you and put a warrenty on it for a fee. Worth a try if really concerened about warrenty. my experience of after market warrenties are a waste of time some only cover up to £30 ph labour and the famous wear and tear statement seems to exclude everything. ( i once had a noisy wheel bearing they would only cover if it was physically broken noise was due to wear and tear)

I spoke to BMW Warranties today as mine runs out in Nov - and they confirmed that if you renew an existing BMW warranty within 5 days of expiry then there is no issue.

However if you leave it more than 5 days from expiry of the most recent BMW Manufacturers / Approved Used warranty then they reserve the right to charge an extra fee for re-instating the warranty. They did not say that it was not possible to re-start the BMW warranty, just that it might cost more.

From what i know if you let bmw warrenty laps by 1 day they will not renew it.

I do mine about 3 weeks before it runs out just to be sure

Thought as much as way back when I had my E30 M3 it was 7 days. How much is a warrenty these days Mark as I remember a year or so again alot of disgust about BMW putting up prices.

bmw have changed the warrenties this year and offer options of different excesses. They have come down in price

I have the full warrenty no excess £951 and it was £1100 last year with a £250 excess

I know this bucks the theme of this thread a little but I had a Diamond policy from Warranty Direct and I was very impressed by it, they always covered the work needed at a BMW main dealer, each claim was limited to the value of the car, unlimited number of claims in the year and only £25 excess.

Things have now changed with the BMW policy and as Mark said, you can get grades of cover to meet your needs. If I had the option again, I would do as Mark has done and go for the extend with no excess option as it is just easier all round but there are other policies out there that are worth the paper they are written on if the BMW option is not available to you.

Just make sure you read the small print is my only real advice!
