On clear laps I was doing mostly 1 min 25 with the odd 24 thrown in. Only timed the occasional lap. Don't know if that's any good on the slightly adjusted track but I felt I could have gone quicker but cups were quite a handful on the rear for some reason.

Might have been a consequence of running rears all round. The front end was so nailed it might be I'm not quite used to that and made the rear feel loose. I should have played a bit more with the Intrax settings but got a bit lazy.

That's pretty good Alex, Donny is very dependant on conditions and it is easy to get 1-1.5 s difference on what seems like the same day.

I think the new national is about 0.5 s quicker due to the quicker bend at Goddards so I guess a really good time on Cups would be around 1m22s but I'm guessing if someone was really on it 1m 20s is possible. I know Curly has done 1m 19s on slicks in his old CSL.

Instruction there is really helpful as so many of the corners are late apex

Ditto.

I was much the same as Alex, didn't time any laps but i was hanging onto his coat tails for a fair few! :smokin:

I also struggled with rear grip from my new track wheels. I think it was a combination of the increased front end grip and the track conditions as well as my rear Cups being a little past their best. I had a fair few sideways twitchy moments throughout the day and consequently never had full confidence in the car like i do on my usual 19's setup. :smt102

Interestingly, i swapped onto my road 19's fitted with PS2s for a last session before the end and i immediately felt happy with them and was probably not that far off my pace with Cups!

It was nice to meet a few more members too:

Rob that rear cup size is really made for pork, with engine sat over them,
Csl is no where near as rear heavy as say a gt3

You probably need to get more heat in them and run not so much rear camber to get them working IMO

shimmy
20-03-2011, 01:34 PM
I agree about rear heat, but should be ok at Donny, just need to drove it harder earlier and be heavy on the brakes to build up heat asap.

If you get twitchy rear end the tendency is to ease up but this just makes it worse as it lessens heat

But as you know Shim, camber plays a massive part to how temps and grip pans out.

Its a big old back tyre he is running. And probably on the same camber as his narrower tyres.
Only way to find out is to try.

This is pretty much what I was feeling Shim. Was taking me 4-5 laps to feel confident in the rear end, which is longer than normal. Even then I wasn't nailing the throttle on exit as I normally would. I was being too gentle. With the front so nailed I was adjusting my driving style, relying on the corner entry speed and being way too progressive/gentle until the rears got enough heat. Should have attacked from the off.

I feel pretty sure I could find a couple of seconds. I found it strange to adapt to braking for the last chicane as well. Couldn't quite nail the brakes the way I should because your now braking over the slight hump, and that was slightly unsettling.

Ditto again...!

I found i had to concentrate on the braking zone before the last chicane too and almost out braked myself a few times as it comes up on you that little bit quicker than it used too on the old layout.

twas a good day. weather was good, conditions were good, not too many red flags. some mobile shicanes in the form of a couple of aston martin lagondas but on the whole good times.

nice to meet you guys too.

Yeah, I was probably a good 10 meters short of the ideal braking point there most of the day. Only really got down to what I would call my correct point on the my last session but they were always frustrated by red flags late on and I didn't time any of those later laps.

Looking back through, my best lap was 1min 24.2 earlier in the day, so a 23 may have been on the cards. Should have really taken some instruction. I will next time.

had a fantastic day, nice to meet alex, rob and brett

have to say i was finding exactly the same as everyone else - problems with rear grip - lots of twitchy moments. had a huge tankslapper after schwantz - thought someone was letting me through but closed the door and a brake and a lift off at the same time left huge double s marks up the hill :hahaha:

wondered if it was cause my rear cups are an '03 vintage but sounds like everyone having the same probs

getting some video sorted on youtube, will post some links when get it done

Well done guys nice vid's I see what you mean the cups dont seem to be hooking up too well was it a bit cold? Not 100% sure if the new circuit is a bit quicker because the entrance to the s's before start finish now has quite a large raised curb which you dont want to be hitting where with the old circuit you could take a lot of curb and not lose as much speed. But on the new one you do get a better exit, the funny thing is even though you start from further back down the start finish I'm still breaking at the same place - the point of the chevron coming out of the pit lane. The only thing the vid lacked was a bit of disco ;)

Was cold John. Probably 5-7 degrees over the day. Nice sunshine in the afternoon but didn't do much for the temps.

No issues and no rubbing with 3 degrees camber. Didn't tramline much more than normal on the road either. Front end grip was immense. The Cups hardly worn at all and completely even, so set-up appears to be spot on.

camera's on a bracket which is attached to the harness cut out on passenger seat. its held on with something like an exhaust bracket - ment for mounting on a roll cage like i had in my noble but seems to work ok as i have it set up.

Nothing like trying it for yourself mate. You may like what someone else doesn't and what works on one car may not on another.

For me the jury is still out. I'm waiting for higher temps before rejecting. Plus I have a mountain of half worn 265 Cups to get through anyway, so it's all good.;)

my comments if i remember correctly were mixed. I think turn in was improved but they were old cups on the front. I think def breaking was improved. Tramling was increased (only matter for road use and i didnt fancy running them on the road so that meant 2 more tyre with me.

Overall i just thought new 18 inch rims were a more cost effective way of doing 265 all round and i thought lighter rims at the front rather than heavier if i was looking for improvement as well

Quite Shim. Similar thoughts myself. Braking, turn in and corner entry were fab. My Cups were 2010 production all round, although part worn to maybe 3-2.5mm.

Thanks for taking the time. I've used a super clamp on seat which works but not as secure as yours plus passenger seat is standard. Will have a look to see if it's poss to do something similar to yours.
