Right, a few simple questions to those that use/have used cups on the road...

(no man trains needed)

1. What's the grip like compared to say PS2's from cold or in the wet
2. Would 2.5mm on the rear do a 5 day ring trip whilst staying legal to drive back
3.If it rained, would you still do laps of the ring on them or just retire to the car park?

Basically, following on from the other thread, I'm picking my CSL up in the next couple of weeks, and the best set of used CUP's I can find have 2.5mm (in the middle) on the rear and I'm just wondering whether it would be silly to fit these to go to the ring for 5 days at easter.

Having never driven on cups on the road (let alone rain) I have no idea what they are like and just don't want to be sliding all over the place, or worse still if it rains not drive the car round the ring.

Thanks,

James

Cups are fine once they get heat in them, which doesnt take long, go careful, if cold and wet... usually put mine on March / April till - Oct -Nov so run all year ( bollocks mine are currently stored up at the ring ) :banghead:

So

1. Far more grip in better temps / conditions
2. Yes
3. Yes (Laps in the rain)

Heads off for bird pics !

A few more of those and I can make an informed decision! :smokin:

Just one thing though - driving normally how long roughly does it take to get heat in them? I know it's a how long's a piece of string question, but would the average 10 mins fairly quick driving whilst the engine warms up do it or are we talking driving like a hooligan for 5 mins before they grip to anything?

That's right - you other fookers can pass the popcorn around the back row inbetween playing with each other :gayfight::hahaha:

The rears wear quite quick, I would not start a ring trip with 2.5mm

Get some new, if you can't afford new, try new midrange Tyres and get the trip do e on the midrange tyres

Tbh new car, inexperience, cups might be wasted, new or old

To be honest like you say, I'm not at the level yet where it's the tyres that are holding me back - more tuition and trackdays needed

Cups all year round, no probs.

I've done several Ring trips with 2.5-3mm. Depending on weather on some trips I've had to get new out there. Others I've made it home on. They may not be strictly legal but safe ie. not Dunc style canvas and wire poking through.:hahaha: If wet then engage brain and drive accordingly. Simple.;)

However, mainly I would say man up and fit the Cups you ponce.;) Get out there on them and if they need changing they need changing.

With the right geo and careful pressure checks, I get about 3 with road mileage to get there and back. But it depends what tracks as some are more abrasive. Driving style will also effect that. Don't overdrive/overheat them and you'd be surprised how long they can last.;)

HAAAAAAAAAAAA can't even mention my name now!

Iirc when I started Tds with mistakes and overheating etc etc I was getting thru a set if front Cups every 4 track days on average and rears every 6 track days. You do most the damage when they are fresh and new and unheatcycled.

Last year my 4x265 lasted 8 track days.

It depends how you drive and how hard you push along with conditions and geo but I guess you'll find fronts don't last long and rears a bit better

Yes, to be fair I would get 3ish TD's and a Ring trip out of my fronts. Rears always seemed to last quite a lot longer. Hence I now have a stash of 8 part worn rears to get through and will probably do this season with rears all round on TD's without having to buy any Cups and have PSS's for road.

Sometimes my rears go before the fronts. After some extra fun on the track not keeping my right foot in check

I would not recommend driving the ring in the wet on cups unless you know your cars behavior well and feel confident you can handle any surprises it will throw at you. There will be surprises....

My Cups last a decent amount of time as i usually drive to the Ring/track days with my road tyres fitted and Cups shoved on the rear seats!

On track i tend to find that my fronts wear at almost double the rate at which the rears do. Fronts take a pounding on track, especially on our short UK circuits.

I can get a set of OEM CSL 19" wheels in ok without folding the seats.

You can either have them upright or horizontal. I prefer horizontal (stacked 2 high) as they move very little on the seat under braking!

Firstly, i place an old sheet or cover onto the rear seats to help avoid marking damage. To stack them you must first make a stack of 3 high on one side before placing the last wheel on the other side seat. Then pull the highest wheel of the original stack over to make 2 x 2 stacks.

Tip: always have 1 rear/1 front sat next to each other as you cannot get 2 rears next to each other. ;)

I hope this makes sense...!

I haven't tried it with my wider 18" BBS yet though... :bigcry:

I would concur with Magnust on that. I have never driven the Cups in the wet and would certainly not drive back from the Nurburgring with new Cups never mind ones with low tread. I say that as I like to make progress and the day would be too long p#ssy footing around looking out for standing water should it rain.

Ideally get some PS2s for the trip there and back and a take the Cups to switch over on arrival (provided it is dry). I am sure there will be somewhere to get the tyres changed on the wheels if you do not have a spare set of wheels.

New car/track and wet with Cups could result in disaster.

Finally I speak as someone whose first track experience was the Nurburgring. I have still not done any UK track days - I like the freedom of no helmet although I am sure I will learn the hard way eventually. I go across two or three times a year and as you will read on here even the 'experts' find it risky due to other drivers never mind rain and cups.

Indeed.

I've driven my CSL all through the winter with the Cups fitted and it's been fine. Now that they're low (read bald) they're a little bit sketchy in the damp, but guess what pop pickers? I'm still alive!

Lets not forget that the Cup is still a road tyre tha that happens to be rather handy on track.

Launch control ?? 3 seconds  ... dont be too paranoid about what you hear said about driving on cups, they arent as bad as would first appear, I have been driving on them for just over a year and only had the one crash !!!

Buy new and the second hand, use the new for ring trip

But some second wheels for the used ones to keep as track wheels

That's what I would do +1 on that fooker ! ... in fact I bought 'em off ya !

For ten years with my M3 3.2 I never even owned normal road tires  In the winter I put on winter tires (it's a law here in Sweden) and the rest of the year on different r-compound tires. But the ring at speed in the rain in a new unknown car on cups..... naaahhhh..... sounds risky IMHO.

Fold down the back seats, put two rear wheels in the rear.
Remove the cupboard cover, tyre pump and polystyrene in the boot area. Then you can put two front wheels on top of each other.

4 wheels go in flat with the seats down no drama....

Alternatively, as dawg says, seats up, 3 upright in the back and one in the boot.

Ive had 4 wheels (with cup tyres) with 3 further tyres in before...
