hey guys, thought id get your opinions on this.

im working in poland about 4-6 months a year. i need to buy a car to leave out there. before any of you tell me to buy a car out there, i would but cars out there are very expensive because of polish tax.

i want to spend no more than £15k. it has to be small (ie hatchback) and automatic for the missus, and be able to fit a baby seat in the back and a pram in the boot and other baby paraphernalia, and ideally comfortable for long distances (poland is a 17 hour drive).

with that criteria my options are fairly limited and ive narrowed it down to the following: golf r32 mk5 5 door, mini cooper s clubman, bmw 130i 5 door.

what do you lot think and any other suggestions?

thanks in advance

yeah thats my first choice, love that v6. missus aint too keen on it though. she wants something with a bit more prestige. im trying to manipulate the decision with the 4wd is safer for the little one argument.

do you know what the higher mileage examples are like in terms of reliability? last thing i want is to be halfway through a 17 hr drive and to have car problems in the middle of nowhere.

They are pretty reliable, just make sure it had dsg oil and filter@ 40k

The rest is pot luck, just like any car

I personally can't really look beyond the R32 Golf... which reminds me.

On my back up from Galway a couple of weeks ago, a Passat R36 past me. Anyone had any experiences with these? Cracking looking motor and a good alternative to the usual RS4 etc. I was in our TDi Golf so didn't go hunting. Only ever seen one of these, rare as rocking horse poo!

Anyway, yeah, R32 FTW.

i actually wanted one of those for the extra space but its too big for the missus.

they are cheaper than the r32 and with really low miles too. theres a 59 reg car on autotrader with around 20k miles for £11k! well actually thats the only one cheaper than r32s, the rest are all around £20k.

I was just looking there after posting this and seen the one for £11K!!! I would nearly sell the Golf and get this but then Martina only does short journeys and the Golf is ideal at the minute. They look cracking though, particularly the Estate version, very different.

Good luck in whatever you decide mate.

It's one of these (5dr/DSG) that I replaced the CSL with as a daily smoker and car to leave at the station.

Got to say that it's effortless at what it does, am loving the DSG box and the rasp out of the back, but of course it's not the same. Heated seats and mirrors are very handy on these cold mornings, and was good in the recent snow. It's rather juicy though - virtually on a par with the CSL as it feels so sure footed you want to keep listening to that noise out of the rear exhaust.

yeah its looking very one sided lads. you could be forgiven for thinking this is an r32 forum!

im definitely sold on the r32, going to take the missus to conduct some road tests on the different cars.

@jeffers, dont think i could have traded my 'precious' for anything, but fair enough, that exhaust is very very nice.
