Headgasket

Hope not, but sounds like a possibility to me

Ask them to do a compression and leak down test

mines at Murketts this week with the same problem, I will let you know what they say

my HG failure was mainly noticable at high revs and not at idol.

slowly got worse lower down the rev range as i drive it more. I noticed it quite early i think as the trackday with Bealo was proof that it was playing up (he started keeping up;))

By the time id driven home and then half way to simpsons it was considerably more noticable

I reckon it may be somethings else rather than HG (have either of you had any noticable increase in water/oil temps esp during the summer at trackdays?

nope, mines definitely over fuelling, i think its a sensor some where

Hi,

I'm getting a little concerned that BMW are still unable to find the fault with my CSL.

At low RPM in high gears if you place the throttle fully down the engine starts stuttering until the revs gets higher, forcing the car backwards and forwards (kangaroo effect!)

On power the car is absolutely fine. Its slowly got worse and worse throughout the last few months.

BMW have the car at the moment as its under warranty and they have replaced all the coils and spark plugs, a few different sensors etc, and even the clutch.

They are now balancing the throttle bodies and realigning the shims etc, which ive got to pay for??

Has anyone ever experienced this problem. They have had the car in and out for nearly 3 months.

Its gradually got worst and even sometime cuts out completely, almost like some is switching the ignition off very quickly.

So frustrating.

Any help or advice would be most helpful, as i think they really are clutching at straws!!

Thanks

Sure your car doesn't have a dodgy map on it ?

What RPM and which gear? Is the car warm or cold?

Dealer diagnostic tools are capable of data logging on road tests, so technically speaking if they know what they are doing they should have been able to trouble shoot it.

Have they checked fuel pump?

Sounds like you have a lazy throttle actuator. They are prone to failure they can get slow when depressing the throttle. Will not throw a code as they are technically still working.

So to summarise when you are just cruising along at low revs in a high gear you push the throttle to the floor now the ecu pushes more fuel in but your throttles are slow to react and the car will run rich and bog down or kangaroo.

Could be your problem.

blow the engine then get a new one under warranty, bmw cant argue with a blown engine

If no faults codes are stored in the DME, dealers are limited to what they can do under warranty (especially with insured / extended policies) however that doesn't mean they can't fix it. As mentioned earlier I would request a compression and cylinder leakage test are completed and ask for a copy of the results as I've seen the symptoms you describe caused by a head gasket failure.

In that particular case the car needed a block & pistons as the a groove had been cut into the block between the two of the cylinders as a result of the cylinders blowing into each other where the gasket had failed.

Hope you get it sorted.

if the car is under warranty, and there is something wrong with the engine, and bmw is refusing to fix it, i say give em a reason to fix it that they cant say no to. can you think of a better reason than a blown engine?

This is why dealers suck balls! I used to work for one so I know what you are talking about. Yeah if there is no fault code they can t find anything, they are pretty useless mechanics to be fair!

Take it up with BMW UK if you get no joy from the dealer. The fact of the matter is that there is a problem with your car and just because they can t find it does not mean it does not exist!

It is all covered under warranty tell them to fix it or they will have BMW UK to deal with.

I can not believe how good the service is at MURKETTS, it was good the last time so I shouldn't be surprised.
Antony has taken over from Andy and giving the same superb service that you just don't get anywhere else. Gareth is looking after the car in the workshop. They got quite a long list from me and lets say they are addressing all I have pointed out plus other things they have noted :smokin:
Top place

I can't tell you what my stuttering fault was as they are changing a multitude of things to resolve

If you have the BMW Approved Used Car warranty they should fix it what ever it is,as the AUC warranty is better than the extendable warranty which most of us have.I would phone BMW UK and tell them.;)

The car is now a lot worse.

It completely cut out on the A34 today, had hardly any power, for around 6 miles. I think it was running on 3 or 4 cylinders. The engine light had come on.

I carried on and was going to pull over at the next junction, when suddenly the engine light disappeared and i regained all cylinders.

It has got really bad now.

Im sure from what happened today its something to do with the ignition system?? its got all new coils and plugs etc.

What else other than these items run the ignition system??

I will drop the car straight back off to BMW. Hopefully now there should be a fault on the computer.Hope you get it sorted mate, its a bloody nightmare when they cant find a fault.:bigcry:

+1

hopefully now it will show a fault code, and they will fix it. but if you dont end up getting anywhere with it and them, think you should really consider blowing the engine. hope it doesnt come to that.

good luck

Hi,

Symptons seem to suggest an ignition or
fuelling issues ?

Water in fuel ? or dodgy fuel at some stage ?

Injectors sticking or contaminated with water etc ?

Have BMW taken the ECU out at all to test and check it ?

BMW can read the ECU.

They seem just to be looking at all the usual suspects
which would throw a Code, when they can see
for themselves that none are being thrown.

Problem with BMW Certified Technicians is that if its
not in the book then it does not exist.

I would ask that your ECU is read and tested.

The Gorilla.

school boy error if you look on e46 fanatics, do a search for coils there is a video on changing and checking coils, a muppet could do it after watching the vid! I would front the dealer and say you want to take it to a CSL specialist for them to check (park lane / murkkets) and if they find anything they have missed you want a full refund, which I just got from BMW a year on for work that tried to sort a fault but didnt.

it shows someone with a bit of head matter can sort faults without faults being thrown up

A fault code gives an effect, not a cause. ;)

A misfire detected for instance on no 3 cyl could have 5 possible causes.

Didn't want to start a new thread but I have noticed when im in 4th doing around 40/50mph and put foot down the engine kind of causes a kangaroo effect until reaching high revs.

Sounds as if its the same problem shepp had!

Any answers on this? car is booked in for Inspection 2 and all Warranty work required but I am compiling a list for them

Cheers

I am interested too - are these being replaced by BMW on a goodwill basis?

& if they have been on a car for 8 years, what chance of failing now?
