Mmmmm, it's gonna be good. Anyone catch the "driven" article by Chris Harris in Evo last month? He reckons it's great bit of kit.:smokin:

Reckon would look quite good in white in a chunky/ugly way, but it really doesn't do a lot for me...
Sounds like engine hasn't been tweaked much over the same lump in other BM's, peak power of 335bhp at 5900rpm, how dull, buy the 123d!
And how tacky is the badge on the engine cover... (and reckon it fails the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 8) )

:hahaha: This is my favourite quote from the promo text... pure comedy :hahaha:
" the 1 Series M Coupe weighs 1495kg !!! unladen ( D'oh !!! :clown: :hahaha: ) which is exactly the same as the E46 M3. (Nice & Heavy then :banghead: ) It has a power/weight of 227hp/tonne or 4.4 kg/bhp, which is pretty well the same numbers quoted for the E46 M3 back in 2002 " ... does that make the 1 Series M Time Travell machine ? ;) :hahaha: :hahaha: :hahaha:
So who's going to the first to mention the single piston callipers on this beast
IMHO this is squarely aimed @ the NEW bread of Estate Agents ;) who don't know any better
And how tacky is the badge on the engine cover... (and reckon it fails the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 8) )
:bigcry:
Indeed... unless the M stands for Marketing  Shocking !!! none the less :119: and it's upside down too :clown: D'oh :banghead: :hahaha:

It is a prototype :hahaha:
I think it looks nice, and will be a giggle and would own one, not instead of a CSL as it's not a CSL replacement, could not really give a fook if a badge is upside down, back to front, not there, or pink :hahaha:
Nice to see the little 1 get beefed up, its a lovely looking car the coupe ;)
Especially in white, good daily motor with a bit of grunt, toys and comfort !

Look out for pirates.
The BMW 1 Series M Coupé leaves the harbour.
10.12.2010
Pirate, noun, masculine [Ital. pirata < Lat. pirata < Greek peirates] = robber of ships at sea. That’s the dictionary definition.
When people talked about the Pirate at BMW M GmbH in recent months, they generally spoke in terms of happy expectations and rarely referred to the sea. Nonetheless, this code name does not seem entirely random. After all, the aim of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is to plunder unknown territorial waters and to make it easier to gain a foothold in the BMW M world.
The aim is to offer fans, both young and not-so-young, a car that concentrates on what is most important: the driving experience.
When the BMW M3 first gave wing to the drams of automobile enthusiasts 25 years ago, no one could ever have expected the success that would be enjoyed by the compact sports car. The successes of the M3 have been considerable to date, not least in long-distance races. The model itself has also increased in size. The length and wheelbase have now reached dimensions that two generations ago would have been associated with a BMW 5 Series. These figures alone make it clear that there is room for another model beneath the BMW M3.
This is precisely the purpose of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. Like its forebears from the 1980’s, this car has no unnecessary frills. It is available in three paint finishes, the interior is fixed, there is one transmission variant and one chassis design. Oh, and let’s not forget: a whole load of fun. That’s all.
Anyone who has had the opportunity to drive the small M will immediately understand what this means. Something that may seem comparatively unspectacular on paper becomes a sensation with every meter traveled. The great-looking packaging is like the icing on the cake.
The first things you notice are the wider fenders. They make room for the wider track - with an extra 71 mm on the front axle and 44 mm on the back in comparison with the BMW 135i, you already get a feeling of the kind of driving dynamism available here before the car has even moved.
Typically for the BMW M, the front of the car features a number of ventilation slots. The narrow, vertical openings are something new. These open into the wheel arches, creating an “air curtain”. The air is diverted to the wheel arches in such a way that it emerges along the front wheels. This optimizes flow and reduces air resistance.
On the sides can be found a modern interpretation of the M grill and the M wing mirrors in the BMW M3 design.
Wheels in competition design and format give the BMW 1 Series M Coupé a really strong look.
Last but not least, there are the obligatory four exhaust pipes on the back.
When it comes to the exterior paintwork, the designers have concentrated on what really counts. The choices are: Alpine White, Sapphire Black Metallic and Valencia Orange Metallic.
Valencia Orange is also found in the interior. This is black throughout, featuring panels of Alcantara, while the contrasting orange-colored steam provides an eye-catching element.
The driver’s cockpit doesn’t just look good, it fits like a glove. The M seats connect the driver with the machine and, as he stares at the gray-backed speedometer, he will have just one wish - to press the ignition.
On command, the six-cylinder engine wakes with a sonorous sound. After only a few meters, the 340 turbo HP output will make its present felt with its spontaneous responsiveness, which can be sharpened even further with a touch of the M key on the steering wheel. The 450 Nm torque, which increases quickly to 500 Nm via overboost, offers all the power you could ask for. However there is one thing the car doesn’t have: turbo lag. The standard sprint to 100 km/h is completed in 4.9 seconds, while the 200 km/h mark is reached in just 17.3 seconds.
With its direct steering and 6-speed manual gearbox, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé makes every driver’s wish come true. Anyone taking a bend at speed will immediately notice the familiar performance of the variable M differential lock. The finely coordinated chassis connects the car to the road in the tried-and-tested M manner, ensuring the necessary road-holding and dispensing with exaggerated hardness.
Whether on the public roads or on the race track, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé will be a genuine surprise for some more powerful cars. If you like, it expresses all the virtues you’d expect from the M family in a nutshell.
Accordingly, the aim of the marketing men to position the BMW 1 Series M Coupé as a raider in the compact sports cars market is certainly not too far from reality. In particular, because the youngest member of the Garching stable is the only genuine coupé in its class. The car will have its first outing in May 2011.

Well there seem to be a few raiders on this web site, so maybe they'll like the 1er? ;)
Thought the 135i had 6pots but this has the old skool brakes then?
On the plus side loooks good in white, and I'd rather they added "///M" cars at the low end of the range than those X5/X6 monstrosities.

So the "M" does stand for "Marketiong" in this case, as it did on the X5M & X6M Panzer Tanks. ;) :hahaha: IMHO Alpine White is the best colour for majority of M cars, including the concept, computer generated "M-Pirat" image  but £40K before any infamous BMW options, for that !!! :eeek: Sorry but I'd rather get another CSL

Notice they never show you a side-on view so you don't get the full horror of that stupid drooping sill line. I've always disliked the look of the 1-series, so I suppose I was never a potential customer for this.
Presumably it's manual only ? And the same basic price as a 335i M-Sport, so it's going to have to be pretty special to drive if they're going to sell many of them.

Indeed... good point well made  Pic to demonstrate your point, below
I'm also not a big fan of the 1-Series (can U tell ? ;) ) but I had some slim hopes that BMW would make something very special with the 1 Series M Coupe, only to realised what the "M" (in this case) actually stood for ;)

Look chaps, you may not like the looks and marketing but why not wait until you drive the thing.
I've spoken to someone who has (not a BMW employee) and he reckons it's an absolute hoot and genuinely feels like an M car. A whole different planet from a 335i.
I'm booking a test drive as soon as it's possible. Not looking to buy but I want to try it. I personally love the looks. It's significantly pumped up over the base models and the fact it's only available with a manual box makes it clear it's a drivers car.

Lots of negativity surrounding this car...?
I have to say that i agree with Alex - one can can hardly write a car off based on sill lines or price alone without first having a decent test drive. I for one quite like the look of it - although maybe not in that half-arsed red colour!
At the end of the day its an 'M' car albeit at the lower end of the 'M' spectrum and should not be viewed as anything other IMHO. BUT - it will still be a very good car, of that i have no doubt!

My point exactly, people dislike the iPad in the same way, as it doesnt do this and that bla bla bla, its still selling in droves, over 7 million infact in the few months it's been out, it leads the pack others follow.
1 series M will no doubt do the same V it's Audi / VW rivals, and it's done it's job if it does !
Everyone is entitled to there own opinion Matt, you dont like end off, I do, end off ;)
I will booking a test drive also so I can see if it is a little bundle of fun in the flesh :clown:

IMHO I don't need to drive it to know it's going to be V. good (although I'd like to have a cheeky test drive  ) ...that's not the issue here but there is so much more to a truly GREAT M car then just how well it drives, the M3 CSL being the ultimate example to my point ( I knew there was a CSL Register connection somewhere :hahaha: )
Our beloved M3 CSL was by no means 100% perfect (brakes, overall weight and the initial O.T.R. price ) but it was developed from an already impressive E46 M3 platform :supz: and made better in very limited numbers with super cool :smokin: instant classic looks from the word GO that get better as time slips by :smt055. I'm sorry but the 1 Series is not an amazing platform to start with ( have you driven the 116i ? :bigcry: ) It's more of an expensive VW Golf alternative for BMW to fill an imaginary Marketing gap with, for wan-a-be BMW snobs who can't quite stretch to decent 6 pot 3 Series territory  but we live in a democracy (last time I checked) and at the end of the day if all you want is a half baked, overpriced "M-arketing" Coupe 1 Series as a run-about to massage your ego on daily basis, then this will be perfect  IMHO obviously ;)

The missis has 1 series Coupe (120d) M sport, running KW's and 10mm spacers, it's great fun to drive, feels planted, and for a daily shitter it ticks the boxes, and in white ( with a cheeky bit of carbon wrap roof) it looks v nice. So yes I have driven one !

You've made a good job modifying/personalising the 120d Sport with some after market suspension and spacers  to make what was obviously OK into something that's better (Liking the cheeky carbon wrap roof too :smokin: ) It seems modern BMWs, not just the 1 Series, are extremely colour sensitive (even by BMWs own admission) White has become the NEW Black and seems to be working best on the likes of 1 Series so your colour choice is Spot On  Also the 2 litre Dieseasel engine (which originally derives from the E46 3 Series ;) ) is an absolute Gem, especially in the 1 Series, only bettered by the 123d and 135i . You've really been spoiled with the 120d Sport and you really should (NOT!) try the 116i to get my point :smt009 ... it's just plain wrong :bigcry:
Suffice to say I'm not having a personal pop at you Dazza (why would I :smt102 ) I'm just voicing my opinion which is at the oposite end of the spectrum to yours

I have driven a 125i and 135i coupes (all the models of the hatch version).
The 125i was fully loaded with the BMW performance stuff.
Nothing special at all.
The 1 M is a tuned 135i, a bit wider, a bit ///M arketing etc.
It will sell good to the targeted market, similar market to the 135i coupe one // usually short and definetely wannabe-faster-than-M3 owners.
No offense meant but I have seen 20+ 135i coupes in Zurich and all of them were below 1.60m
