Do you not have another key to unlock then use the boot release in the car?

Or if the cat us locked call out BMW Assistance and they will sneaking get into the boot and get the keys for you. Costs about £50 if your warranty doesn't cover it.

AA etc may do the same ?

Saved me more than once

I suppose look on the bright side, at least you will have 2 keys now rather than the 1...

What about the previous owner? Worth a pop, maybe he's suddenly 'found' it since he sold the car to you.

Don't forget to have it coded to your car

Expensive mistake mate, but at least there's no chance of you making it again, now you have a spare. ;-)

You didn't happen to ask how much a new key is for an E36 318i did you?
There's a guy over on M3cutters that's spending a FORTUNE on an E36 M3 Cab, bought it rough and replacing loads of parts on it to bring it up to A1 condition. Each to their own I suppose. My point is, he only paid £40 iirc for a new key for his, where does the extra 90 bangers go??? Alarm part of it? As the E36 only has a wee light on it...

Absolutely no comparison between the E36 & E46 keys. Our E46 keys have a micro chip inside that stores lots of info like chassis number, service history info, mileage, etc + there's a rechargable battery inside that gets charged via ignition slot, everytime you use the key, so if you have both keyes it's important to alternate the use of both keys, as failier to do so can result in one of the keys going completely flat, loosing it's memory :banghead:
Also, the E46 keys require coding/programming to the car for the alarm/immobiliser + all of the other functions to work 100%

E36 318i ermmmmmmm have to admit did'nt cross my mind LOL
The extra dollar must be the coding of the key ??? Its exactly as the original key ie; 3 buttons

Make sure you swop keys from time to time or else the battery will go flat, and once its dead its dead.;)

This must happen quite a bit, because in the new BMWs you can't actually lock your keys inside, the boot pops open if you have it inside (well it does in the E9X)

The other tip top tip must be to get the trickle charger sorted out so that you attach it to a charging point under the bonnet like mine is. Very little chance of locking the keys under the bonnet as I am sure only a fool would put the keys on the engine and risk them falling down somewhere out of reach.

Black CSL Steve, did you get one of the plastic keys too if not how much do they want for one of those? Ideal for posting when you close your keys in the boot abroad.

These are £25.54 + VAT... Part number: B51.21.7.124.770 + you'll have to provide your V5, drivers licence and the cars Chassis number
Best kept in ones wallet :smokin: just in case

Do not worry I do have mine in fact possibly even two of them. I was just interested in the price. Can you actually drive with a plastic key or are they only to get into the car? Does anyone know. I have never even tried mine in the lock.

Doubt it for £25.

It may turn on ignition but wont give drive authorisation to immobiliser module, as dont think they have internal gubbons.

Just go to a key cutters and get a blade cut, just in case blade. Simple

yep plastic key drives car ok, you just have to read manual book to void having to drive with the alarm going off every 2 minutes :smokin:
