Was at Murketts today with Matt getting my oil service done and after i moaned my new diff fitted under warranty last month was a bit noiser than the old one Gareth (the mechanic) checked details and found out that NEW DIFFS supplied by BMW even after all these years still have the old type of diff oil in and it should be replaced by the uprated expensive version

Most know that this oil exists and have it in their cars BUT i never imagined for a minute that new diffs being supplied now would not have it in

So get it sorted - should be free if diff was under warranty

I got a new one last year under warranty but haven't noticed it being noisy at all. Just the usual clunking when moving slowly.

Seems mad that they still put this 'old' style oil in the new diffs!!! Good shout though.

Mine was replaced under full BMW Warranty by the previous owner when the car had done about 30k I think, having had my Inspection II I assume Murkett's would have used the correct oil in it then!? :)

Wonder what Matt's has in it.....?

Sh1t, I forgot. I just had an InspII a little over a month ago, do they change the diff oil then? Surely they would put the revised oil in then... wouldn't they? :-s

Also, something my mate noticed was the diff oil wasn't on the invoice. Is this part of the InspII price?

Well, since I stood next to moaning Shimster ;) I asked for the revised oil to be sloshed into my shiny new diff as well  while they did some other remedy work
Picking her up Saturday morning, diff full of the good stuff  hopefully.
TBH I knew nothing about this :smt017 My NEW diff sounded very quiet and clonk free.
Good shout Shimmy :smokin:

Any 'part no.' for the new oil? Is this a recall, something to be done only if you have a new differential or something that you need to get done as soon as you get the chance and pay for it?

I only ask for a part no. as the dealership is bound not to know about the new oil.

The special oil is b83.22.2.282.583. You need 3 litres at a bit under 30 quid per litre.

Is the diff. replacement common amongst those who extend warrenty??
If so what are the signs to look / listen for??
I am contemplating taking out warrenty on my CSL as benifits from full BMWSH so interested what are the most common parts that get replaced??
Do most of you take BMW Warrenty or Warrenty Direct or A.N.Other???
Thanks

Good morning Steve,

Most take out the BMW as very rarely does anything get turned down. Anything within reason obviously.

The diff, look for signs off oil on the garage floor after parking and around the output shaft seals. My O/S shaft bearing collapsed causing it too weep. I wouldn't say it got much noisier iirc, I just knew it was loosing oil and therefore not good. If you grab any of the shafts (keep it clean boys) and there's any kind of lateral movement, it's certainly worth a visit to BMW.

Other common parts include the Induction flap where the wee potentiometer usually packed up, rear springs are covered but the biggy that I have it for is the Engine and Gearbox which have been replaced under warranty by a few lads on here.

Hope this helps.

I was charged for 3 by the good people at Cooper Reading, and the local indy also mentioned that the oil comes in a set of 3x1litre packs. Apparently it only takes 2.something litres to fill it up.

The oil is in 0.5 lt packs and you need 3 (which means 1.5 litres).

I had my diff changed under warranty a year ago because it was noisey. Low frequency whine similar to a wheel bearing. Well that noise has started on the new diff so being looked at on Tuesday whilst in for an oil service. I bet they never changed the oil on the new diff!

So I ask once again then. If I go into BMW and ask them to replace my differential oil with the new stuff should they do it as a recall/ under my warranty or will I have to fork out?

Pip

I would expect that they do it for free (as there is a service bulleting).

The same happened to me, the original oil comes with/in the diff and they don't
use the modified oil if not reminded it seems! (approx £90 for the oil)
Thought it was just me having bad luck :(
Good call Shim

After BMW UK gave Murketts the green light, I've finally had my Diff oil upgraded to to newer, more expensive stuff F.O.C., but only because my diff is still very shiny :smokin: with less then 100 miles on it
Apparently anyone who's about to have their Inspection 2 Service done, needs to confirm with their servicing dealer that the newer oil is being used. Everyone else who's quite some time away from an Inspection 2 service and wants the Newer Diff oil, will need to pay for it :smt085

Interesting stuff - mine has only done about 50 miles on it's new diff, so I better get in touch with BWM. Thanks for the heads up.

I got a new diff under warranty last year and Ive just had the 1200mile run in done on it. I doubt it'll have been the revised oil put in but how would I know?! And by asking Id doubt I'll get the real answer.

Hmm
