What is your opinion about 9.5J in the front ?

Does this has a negative effect on the steering rack by any chance ?

I ran 9j on 265 35 18, and had no issues,

It helped front end grip no end, but did cause some "tramlining effect", but that was no issue.

Others say it will affect the bearings, rack etc, but I ran 9j 265 35 18 for a long time with no issues whatsoever.

Are we talking about the rear CSL wheels on the front? Are they 9.5J?

shimmy

I trialed 9,5J on front using rear CSL rims but two issues!

1. Offset means it is almost impossible to run less than -3 camber. Even then they are tight on the outer arches

2. Stock wheel was a little heavy for my liking especially rear up front

BBS ch 19 x 9,5” et 40 with a 12mm spacer giving et of 28mm with a 265 cup tyre. This will be within 2mm of your KW clubsport springs.

Negative points
You will need to borrow “Glendogs” :smt055 hairdryer to stop the plastic lining form touch the tyres on full lock.

Maximum speed through the Foxhole is 140MPH, the out tyre hits the front part of the outer front wing.

Slower track time on the Ring and spa due to drag and over steer.

Positive points

Faster lap times on shorter twister circuits

Longevity of the front tyres.

Looks like” Duncan” A little over weight or short fat & round lol :smt055

i can understand why the set up might not be ideal for the Ring but cant see why oversteer would produce slower times. Surely the point of oversteer is no different as the rear tyres still have the same grip, its just reducing the understeer making the oversteer the first point of lack of grip, but still therefore at a slightly later point

Is ti the fear of oversteer slowing you down?

You can turn in faster, slower on the power on the exit = steering corrections tyre scubbing + loss of BHP

slower on the exit = slower down the straight = slower times.

Short twisty circuits = short straights nothing lost.;)

you dont have to turn in faster:smokin:

if you turn in the same you have less understeer and no greater oversteer so times (from corners) will be the same.:supz:

Yes mate ;)

I have yet to mount the wheels but i am looking forward to trying these next year! Hopefully the car will retain the standard car balance without the oversteer effect that TANKSLAPPER mentions as these wheels keep the normal 'staggered' setup of the car as the rears are wider than the fronts

so what the point of driving slower on turn in

wider tyres = more drag less top speed.

square set up is not the fastest way on fast circuit. It just gives you longevity making the fronts last as long as the rears.

The best set up is 245/255 fronts because they fit properly with 285 rears. Then you can just listen to the chassis around the bends creeking and moaning as the g goes through her lol

No V box lite required. :hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:

T$

because you numpty you said the lap times were slower because you were existing quicker and loosing grip coming out!

you will not corner slower but you may not be adjusting your driving to suit the set up properly

you may find straights a bit more challenging but with -3 camber i doubt youllhave any more drag

psycological me thinks

Before calling me "numpty" you should read my post properly :birdman:

Doesn't really matter WHY it will be faster or slower as long as I can see the difference on the stop watch.

I prefered the 265 35 18 all round set-up and it made me faster, or was that just my driving improving and infact, if I went back to 235 front I would be faster still? Who knows.

But as T$ says, each to their own.
I dont listen to other people now if im honest, I go and try for myself. Ill consider different views, but I wont take them as gospel.

The wider front tyre for me helped with understeer, I did drive tailhappy at times, but that was majority of the time intentional. If in the mood and really pushing on, the car was planted.

The extra drag of a 265 over a 245/255 will not alter the straight line speed to a noticeable amount, the difference will be negligible IMO. The corner exit speed was far more important. And the wider front helped me get a better corner exit thus improving my straightline speed.

The car was more twitchy with the wider front, maybe T$ in the same one armed boat as me, struggled with this? I dont, but I am very physically strong.

One thing to note, is that most of our cars were on different tyres, different tracks, different wheels, different suspension, different tyre pressures, different conditions, different geo/set-up, and most important different drivers.

My advice try for yourselves, small changes wont kill you but they may make you slightly faster/slower than before.

So the slick set is gone, the BBS CH will be sold next week.

CH-R it's 10.5J on the back. I don't know why BBS made them so wide, shall I guess American-pimp-my-ride-style ?

Do you put 265 on this rim ?

depends on thr tyre Alex, some are wider at the lip than others eg 265/30/19 Cups are recommended on 9.0-10.0 only.

Check the manufacturers tables. I doubt insurers would look kindly on out size Tyres after a prang.

I have a pair of 285s to try - i may have to add a little more negative camber at the rear, however!

If that will not work i will try 275 which should be ok.

The other option is rear CH-R 9.5J ET32 and I will have to put a 12mm spacer.

The offsets of BBS are a bit different than the OEM CSL wheels.
The front BBS CH that I have go out about 10mm compared with the standard CSL wheels....

I use a laser temp meter that I have (I mainly use it for my RC engines to check temp and adjust the mixture) to measure the tyre temp.

I had hoped to have gotten a set of team dynamics 9x18 all round but it seems td have given up casting wheels, so I'm told.

I wouldn't do 9.5 front what's the point, you can't fit a bigger tyre so you're just adding weight to the wheels.

Yes, but you manage to stretch more of that tyre onto the road/contact patch surely?

My wider 18's are still lighter than the OEM 19's anyhow so i'm not overly concerned :smokin:

Given the regs say you have to run narrow tyres on the front in CSL Cup I'm not sure what relevance there is?

I wouldn't have thought so Rob, wouldn't it just alter how the sidewall reacts to the tarmac, a stiffer ride, more direct steering feel and a faster breakaway....

(my other job is writing the fiction that appears on wine bottles)

You need to get some pics up of your new wheels on the car Rob, we're not really bothered about your contact patch
