Germany's Nürburgring is the world's automotive playground. A public park for gearheads. Sadly, it's been handed over to privateers who've put the entire 'Ring at risk. Michael Frison of 20832.com (http://20832.com/?lang=eng) explains why we need to save the Nürburgring! — Ed.

You might be surprised by reading this headline and I'm aware the subject has not gained much awareness abroad, but there's currently a serious threat to the Nürburgring.
Since it's opening in 1927, the Nurburgring (http://jalopnik.com/tag/nurburgring/) has been under complete public ownership and administration, but in May of this year the complete Nurburgring (http://jalopnik.com/tag/nurburgring/) race track and park was rented out to two privateers (Kai Richter, Jörg Lindner). They have no motorsports background whatsoever, but are the driving forces behind the makeover, which includes the addition of a theme park with a new roller coaster that doesn't work, more hotel capacity than the area needs, a 3,000-seat event arena, and a shopping mall. Everything appears to be far too big and remains empty most of the time.

Nothing new there Mark - it's a complete white elephant, over budget and empty more often than not. Who ever came up with the idea on that scale wants shooting! :banghead:

The worry is that they will squeeze the genuine car enthusiasts for yet more money to pay for the mess... No wonder they aren't improving the Nordschleife facilities as they have that theme park bollocks to finance! :bigcry:

I remember wandering through that 'Mall' and thinking "Is this place open?" Could have made some nice garage space though,

The New parts don't really add anything to the place, and most of the time it's empty, can't see anything happening with the place i.e closing though, to much of a revenue generator.

Might of been a bit more intelligent spending something on the track facilities around the nordschelife, and the surrounding roads, as it's now gridlocked on the busy weekends.

Private days and hotel tiergarten all the way ;) as it has been for years and should be

Not a shock really. Over priced, over-hyped, and there is no way the investment made there added up.

I agree with Daz. It'll roll back to how it was and that's no bad thing.

Indeed mate. I feel there will be a such an impact on the real and traditional businesses built up in the local area that closure is not an option for the track itself. The stupid over expansion surrounding it may well be left to rot but who cares.

The go karting was fun though whilst it was gridlocked

i agree though, a long way to go just to get stuck in traffic

It did all seem a bit of a ghost town when i went earlier in the year.

As others have said, I doubt the track itself is in danger. For one thing, the major manufacturers have invested too much there for it to be shut down.

Tourists days may well rise in price (again) though, but this could have the positive impact of flushing out the noobs and clearing the traffic a little.

I hope so anyway! Now that I work out of London, I'm aiming to make several visits to the Ring, so the fucking place better be open!
