View Full Version : Warranty renewal time... gulp!
OK, so I got the letter from BMW, after a year of ownership they have offered to empty my bank account, credit cards and mortgage top up facility for a new warranty.
So I took a deep breath read the letter and thought, not too bad, inidcative Comprehensive quote for a 50k mile car of £835. Problem is mine has now done 63k (18k in the last year), so I checked the website and with a £100 excess £1,926!!!! Gulp! With a £250 excess £1,535... still Gulp! :bigcry:
So I looked at trading down - a Named Component warranty is £1,266 and a Driveline £880. :banghead:
So, I would welcome your thoughts. Is the Comprehensive worth all the extra cost? Given the usual claims, would a Driveline do the job? I reckon if I am paying £1,200 for a Named I may as well pay £1,500 for a Comprehensive. So I reckon the Comprehensive or the Driveline.
What are your thoughts from past experience?

I have named component over 60k miles cover

Think ill do the same as Shimmy as mine is over 60k.The driveline cover only covers you for 5k,which i dont think is good enough as Duncan will tell you.;)

I'm feelin for you, have just renewed mine on-line, comprehensive, 32k miles, £250 excess, £612 for the year.
I dont know if i could bring myself to pay £1,500+ to be honest.
She's due for an oil change around now, i usually use a dealer in Stockport, but if anyone knows an alternative around south Manchester . . . . . . .

so interestingly if i swapped my car for a 32k mile CSL i could save £1000 on warranty alone  PER YEAR
Thanks for your thoughts. I didn't realise the Driveline had a £5k cap and I agree, that's not enough if things go really Pete Tong, which is why you buy a warranty after all.
So, the bill is at least £1,266... bugger there goes my SS race backbox...:bigcry:

No i havn't included the emergency service option . . . . . . . i dont think they would collect from the Ring anyway: LOL

I didn't know you can do it with a one off payment. Just new here and 'Paying As You Go' 80quid a month - no excess comprehensive cover.
Doesnt seem too bad!

Doesnt seem too bad!Paying monthly is a good option,as when you go over 60kmiles the payment stays the same.Unlike the annual payment which goes up.;)

Ah, cool. Thats what I thought. A wee bit away from 60, but good to know all the same.

I decided not to re-new my warranty 2 years ago and have saved a fair war chest of funds as a result incase something goes. Mine is at 62k now and no real issues durring my no-warranty time. I keep the BMW service history up so I have the choice to add warranty if I feel the need.
However, I think it suits the way I use my car and if things were different I'd definately have some level of cover. I also have good friends who happen to be a very respected CSL specialist. That helps my decision.

Stick with it Stevie !! and dont miss a fookin payment mate..... its what I do... mines 300 shy of 70k now, and reading the T's & C's , there isnt any onus on us to inform them of the mileage, FFS they should be able to pick that fooker up from their own records !

Mine is due in October and this is the way I am going ie the same as last year - comp 250xs. I have 29k on the clock and only manage 2,000 miles a year anyway.
At the end of the day the warranty people appear to be getting more picky and we all read the dramas a member (I forget who now) had getting their car back from Europe even though they had emergency call out. Enough said on that.
I would not mind but three years of warranty and I was refused flat the replacement of the rear exhaust box flange as it is not covered and I have never made any other claim.
Pip
After what I've been through today I'll be really really considering my options on just how much cover is needed when mine is due just after Xmas! Although my car is relatively low mileage at 47k I'm seriously considering just a Driveline Warranty with Breakdown and a £250 XS, that should halve the cost of my Comprehensive Warranty & Breakdown at the moment!

I will probably downgrade to driveline with £250 excess as mine is now over 60k miles.
I may bin it altogether and pocket the £1900 for a little repairs fund

At £1900 I think everyone has to seriously consider self insurance. Bank the £1900 and add to that the savings from independant specialist work as opposed to the stealers and within 3-4 years you have surely covered the biggest possible outlay due to malfunction covered by the warranty.

That will be high on the list of considerations for myself as well mate! :banghead:

You say that but that is what self insurance is all about risk verses gain. What is the chance of catastrophic failure, how many CSLs have suffered a catasrophic failure? If you think the chances are high then you pay your money and take your chance.

Yeah I agree mate, the point I was making was that Duncan's has let go, this could mean that other's will at some point and as they become older and cover more miles the probability of a catastrophic failure could become increasingly likely.... :(
I just checked my warranty, it was £1029 paid, Comprehensive cover including BMW Breakdown with a £100 Excess for a car under 60k miles, they better sort my clutch out or it will be the last penny they get from me! :banghead:

Sorry, I misunderstood. It is just that BMW do not seem to be playing ball anymore so why waste your money?

No worries, as a couple of people mentioned and as the Dealer told me today the screws have been turned on them a bit lately so I expect they are acting all belt and braces for a few months until it settle's down again :banghead:
For me personally it's just a shame I'm not dealing with the service manager there who has all the CSL knowledge, I'll let this run it's course and see how he does first of all before jumping into anything in March myself.

PipIve got back more than i have paid out for the last 3 years, perhaps ive been lucky as BMW[Mondial] have always been very good with my claims. The only tantrum i had is when they refused a ball joint on the front wishbone, which to be fair was worn and did not fail.so i for one will be renewing after christmas at least one more time, will down grade to named comp.;)
Took my car in yesterday (to Sytners Leicester) for an MOT which it passed no problem, but at the same time I tackled them about my drivers seat which is moving a little under load. This they forgot to look at, but after being reminded they told me one of the bolt holes in the subframe was slightly 'ovalised'.
So as this is not a ware and tare item (to my mind anyway) you'd think the full AUC warranty (which i still ahve till the 27th) would cover it... well not until they have fully stripped the seat frame down to work out why - they already admitted the f**king bolt was loose i.e. the one they re-fitted when they altered the seat angle for me when I bought the car a year ago. :banghead:
So there's over £100 labour i may never get back. That's on top of the fact they have cracked my f**king rear view mirror some how (cracked the glass), so now I will have to fight that as well... Grrrrrrr...
Not sure why I just shared all that with you, just f**king annoyed.
Anyone else got any experience of Sytner Leicester service??
Sorry, my point being, if dealers are generally very unhelpful and unlikely to help make warranty claims, is it worth spending the money on a new warranty at all...?

my experience with bmw is that unless the modification could have contributed to the falut then the warranty will stand
also i have had a number of goodwill gestures when i had no warranty even though i may have had a few modifications on the car
if the car is going to be used for alot of miles or some hard driving i thing the warranty is useful and will save you money and not going to an anal dealer who writes down every modification to appear be doing a good job is a god idea:thumbs:
Thanks for all the advice, I ended up going for the Named Component cover at £116 a month... bargain!
Lets hope I never have to use it... but that would be a waste of money, so... heres hoping the car goes completely tits up and I get my moneysworth... NOT!
