Hello,

my first post, so please be gentle.

In a straight line, would a standard E46 M3 be as fast as a CSL up to ~ 100mph?

Hi Sonu, welcome to the forum, i've had both cars and have driven them back to back same day, the CSL is a HUGE improvement over the normal M3, not just in straight line but in every way! :smokin:

Welcome!

The E46 M3 and the CSL share the same E46 shell- And that is where
it ends. Think more UK touring car with nice seats and BMW badge!

Most probably - a gnats nadger's difference at most perhaps.

Welcome to the forum btw - beware of Shimmy and his 'Mantrain' fascination :bigcry:

So there's one sensible post in this thread ;) :hahaha:

Come on folks even the most hardcore of CSL fanboys (of which I am one even though it's gone) can't seriously claim it's much faster in a straight line upto ~100mph. If you did a side by side there would be next to nothing in it.

just the difference 15bhp and around 100kg makes assuming the flap[s working and your tyres are ok - so very little as Rob and Elliott say:smokin:

My answer was sensible :bigcry:

But it all seriousness, it wouldn't be far off it all. The CSL would be more of 'an experience' with the Induction noise and lack of sound proofing solutions, it's a fantastic place to be when giving it rice :smt055

I know it's not exactly what the original poster asked, but at VMax earlier in the year my normal M3 got exactly the same top speed over 1.5 miles as the CSL which was there.

164mph measured by timing beams. (about 173 ish shown on speedo)

From this I'm assuming there can't be a huge difference in the way they accelerate.
(I'm guessing once you get past about 80mph the weight difference has less effect, and the power difference between the two is not that great in percentage terms)

Even standing still the CSL just looks faster ... :supz::supz::supz:

In all seriousness however, there's really not that much in it in a straight line, but the M3s were never really about straight line speed - throw in a couple of corners however and the difference is obvious and immediate.

thanks for the warm welcome, all ;)

Yea, I do have a CSL. Had a blast on a private road the other day and the M3 was right on me. The worrying thing is that he had a passenger as well. I did notice after, that the gear change speed was set on the lowest setting. This would not make so much difference?

Different drivers so comparison in that situation is no measurement.

I'm 5ft 9 and weigh ~ 80kg, so a little overweight :hahaha:

I must be a crap driver as I don't think there's a prob with the motta :)

check the flap opens up! (physically look under the bonet whilst someones revs the car)

if it stays shut you are loosing 0-30 bhp

the power difference isn't very large between the m3 and csl, so its no surprise your mate was on your tail. You need a lot more power to pull away from a car once rolling.

there's not much difference in a straight line speed between the M3 and a CSL once the M3 is a similar weight to the CSL, here's a bit of a clip down the Kemmel straight at Spa. Shim did get slightly bulked by the Lotus at O Rougue
