Sure thing ... I am getting pretty good at navigating around the GT1 now ... I should be I have 3 different types of GT1 ;)
A clone with the yellow diagnostic head running on an IBM T30
2 Virtual Machine versions running without diagnostic head and via K-CAN and D-CAN cables for different Pre and post 2008 cars.
3 other virtual machines running emulated diagnostic head via K-CAN and D-CAN cables.
Various versions of DIS (from coding v39, v44 to non coding v55 and v57 + Progman SSS).
I've been reading and learning this stuff for the last couple of weeks and I can now build a T30 GT1 quite easily, and I can build the virtual machine versions in my sleep ...
The cheapest way to go about is to buy a D+KCAN cable from ebay and find the software - it'll cost you 4 hours to put it all together and 60 pound for the cable.

Been a 'lurker' on the forums for quite a while but never bothered to join as I don't/ can't own a CSL (unavailable in the states :(). But I had to join to say thanks for posting this and the dyno mode thread, awesome . I've always wondered what the screen shots looked like for servicing the SMG system.
I'm really interested in getting a GT1 for myself but am uncertain of the best reliable place to get one. Where did you purchase yours from and did it include the IBM T30 laptop? Also, would you mind posting your thread here? http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=231113, I'm sure the members there would enjoy it very much as well :)

I am on m3forums. I do believe the admins there are a little cautious about pirated software - hence why I've not actually posted this info on there. More than welcome to provide a link to it if it's okay with the admins here.
The GT1s come in various forms as described above; You don't need an IBM T30 or even a diagnostic head.
There are basically 3 versions out there:
1. Clone yellow diagnostic head (also commonly known as EDIC) that runs on IBM T30 via native installation on hard drive (i.e. Unix based) - this is the MOST stable system out there, but easy to fry the yellow diagnostic head if you don't know what you are doing.
2. Same as above, except you run the DIS GT1 via a virtual machine.
3. Virtual machine system that utilises BMW INPA software and IFHSrvr32 protocol that does not require a diagnostic head (or you can run an emulated diagnostic head, but necessary). These use either the Serial OBD2 cable (if your laptop has a serial port - or you can use USB to serial connectors or PCMCIA to serial connector) or you can buy D-CAN and K-CAN USB cables from ebay.

I have the virtual GT1/inpa/dis that seems to work fine on all my cars though I've only done diagnostics so far. Is there any general info out there on the web about this stuff? Is there anything worthwhile doing maintenance wise on my csl?
