Genuine question here,

Now i have spent the morning going through all the flap releated posts on here and would like to know if its ok to run without it?

last night i noticed the car was a little quiet when giving it some hoof so once home got the missus to jump in and give it a good old rev up to 5K.

No flap operation seen with sport on or off.

Now the mechanic that done my Insp II the other week commented that there was a fault code there but it was operating fine at the time of the service. He also said (as most do) if it stops working again just whip it off.

So if i remove it will the engine blow it's headgasket into 1000's of bits, spit the crankshaft out through the watter pump and smash the SMG box to bits or...... will it just be fine as long as i dont drive through any swollen rivers?

opinions please

Paul, I know Rob runs without his and he does a lot of miles without issues, I'm sure other's do too, I think it will be fine mate :)

If still under warranty get BMW to repair the actuator motor. Then remove it!

Yeah thats what i thought Dan, can't see any difference running it without one other than the noise as the engine will only suck as much air as it needs.

Rob,
No warranty on the car, it's +60K now so have been to scared to price it up this year :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: :hahaha:

Flap will be off within the hour

Mine has been off for almost 2 years with no problem. Only side affect is that air filter element gets dirtier a little quicker with the flap removed.

Just a quick one, when does the flap usually open, I thought it was above 6.2k normally and from 3k upwards in Sport mode?

No difference without it. I ran without for about 100 years. Infact now you've mentioned it, and I've sold the car, I realise the flap is still in the garage on a shelf :hahaha:

There used to be some nonsense going around that without it the engine would be "getting too much air" :hahaha:

Thought that might be the case so an air filter at the same time as the oil change between service intervals is on the cards. :smokin:

Dan, mechanic at BMW told me anything above 4500rpm and it should open. I took it he was meaning with sport on.

:hahaha: :hahaha: :hahaha: hmmmmm  need a bigger hole in the bumper for that i'm affraid :hahaha:

Am I missing something or is there actually any point in running the flap? What's it's advantage when it's working?

The flap was primarily fitted to satisfy noise regs. Has no effect on outright power.

As far as we all know it was put in for noise reasons. Original prototype CSL didnt have one. It just limits air flow at lower revs and reduces therefore BHP 0-30 bhp over the range it doesnt open compared when sport is pressed

a faulty flap reduces power for part of the range:thumbs:

So no increase in power at all when open then?

Dan,
What i noticed last night was not so much a loss in power but more of a slower delivery higher up the rev range. (and lack of noise)

The car would still squirm around while pushing hard out of slower bends but just seemed a little more refined so the power was still there just being delivered slightly differently. Does that make any sense? Might be one of that "you needed to be there moments".

Dan,

The flap has to open at some point - whether 'sport' mode selected or not. Foot to the floor in either mode still means that the flap is open which means equal power output. 'Sport' mode selection merely affects which throttle profile is used and determines at which engine RPM the flap opens. If 'Sport' is on the throttle response is slightly quicker and therefore has a (very small) affect on acceleration response.

I think Shimmy knows the RPM point at which the flap opens in each mode. It was on an old post somewhere on here...

Had mine off for over 2 years with no probs.

NO

If you floor gas pedal in Sport mode it will deliver 0-??bhp MORe at the rev range above the flap opening position (ie when the flap is closed in NON Sport mode). This is a gradual increase.

THis power will only be noticed in the rev range where the sport buttoin has an affect on the flap (something like 3500 and 5200 i think)

BUT if you flap is broken and it does not open at all the difference in bhp will continue up to the top of the rev range and makes a total difference of 30 bhp at the top end

when!?!

3 or 4 weeks ago. I was getting fed up with the press attention being one of the UK's longest serving CSL owners ;) :hahaha:

Crystal mate! :bigcry: :hahaha:

Think I'll take the bugger out eventually by the sounds of things! (should have listened to you months ago) :bigcry: ;)
