This is our 'National' trackday event and where it all started for us back in the '70s with the original Batmobile CSL's - today it's the modern E46 M3's that you are likely to see on track representing the CSL moniker - we do however have a group of guys from our first ever Silverstone trackday coming to this event with their beloved E9 CSL's and John Castle will be hosting a lunchtime seminar about these iconic motor cars and recalling the exploits of trackdays past from long before I was born - lol!

We also have for your delight some special machines from ACSchnitzer, Alpina and Hartge on display in the pit lane.
ACS are kindly letting us have use of one of their highly modified E92 M3's piloted for the day by their R&D driver Manni Woltgarten - hot laps are available FOC.

It's our 30th year of running BMW Car Club trackdays and that's why I'm pushing the boat out a bit - I have spent a lot of the clubs money on this one, please come if you can or help me fill some spaces.

Thanks for looking
Nick

Who wouldn't, but alas I'm afraid it's only the passenger seat for us mere mortals!

You will need to register for your ride on the day with one of the ACS staff.

I'd love to be able to do this one but a Wednesday will be tricky to get time off work for travel and return from Cornwall :bigcry:

A Monday or a Friday TD would be easier

.. and dearer !

I really wouldn't mind paying a little more Nick as it would mean the difference between getting the time off work and being able to attend, rather than not when TDs are midweek.

I don't live near any tracks. Castle Combe is my nearest - a 3.5 hour drive away... :bigcry:

Nick Wright
30-07-2010, 11:24 PM
Yeah Rob, I know - I always do Croft on a Monday for just that reason.

.. trouble with the big circuits is that I can't pick and choose - it's take it or leave it when they offer you a date.

A lot of circuits need to rest on the Monday after a race.. and likewise on the Friday before a race weekend.. so it kinda narrows my options.

glendog74

Fair enough mate - i do understand of course.

I'll look into this one as i have never done Silverstone and it would be ideal doing it with the BMWCC. Will try and pull a few strings...!

If it's wet (looking likely, let's face it) I might be there in my E46 CSL. If not, then I'll be there in the Fjord Blue '72 CSL, but it would be good to meet some of you and put faces to names.

I used to track the old CSL but it is beginning to feel a bit precious these days, so I'm just spectating this year.

I live very close to Silverstone, so whatever the weather I'll be there in some way.

Yes mate, it was very rapid as i expected but the thing that impressed me most was the way in which you could throw such a heavy car into corners with total abandon - it just hunkers down, grips, and fires it's way out the other side! It ate most things in it's path with ease including M3s, CSLs and an RS4. Incredible! :supz:

It is a strange feeling, because when driving you are aware of its size and weight but it does not affect it, ive had some good slides exiting roundabouts. The thing loves it. Might venture mine out on track in november.

Garaging was a tenner per car, but I'll let you off this time if you slipped through my net.

Novice stickers are a bad idea, I don't like using them at trackdays.

Moneywise, about a grand up on a £25k spend, thats before any expenses come out - so in reality a break even - which is a result, It could have been a lot worse!

See you all again soon

Why do you think that is Nick, I'm very courteous on track but even more so when I see a novice badge. It's also less frustrating if they don't notice you behind for half a lap. i.e. it wouldn't be worth reporting a novice but if they aren't and won't let you pass or can't because they are only concerned with whats in front then it would be worth reporting them for a quiet word.

Oh and that guy in the Masser owes me a car wash too (the car was filthy muddy before he went out on track, was like wacky races when my car got covered in mud, helped visibilty no end!), he was way too hot into the corners and that thing seemed to corner like a 4x4. He only moved over after getting two wheels on the grass at copse. That should have been a bit of a warning for him... Glad no one was hurt though

It's a pity you couldn't cut the Glasgow lads a better deal, but they had a good time all the same. I met them at Spa the day before and told them about Silverstone, they stopped in for a couple hours on their way back to Glasgow, what a drive!

The lady at the counter said garages were £10 and not per car we did ask. Happy to send over a tenner tho

Thanks for a great day Nick, and for arranging the sun in the afternoon.

He was driving beyond his and the Maser's limits a lot of the time... The others sharing his garage were of similar 'questionable' driving skills too (Audi RS4 & Supercharged CSL) :bigcry:

Masser and co will not be coming back to any of my days again.

bad circuit manners and I are not happy bed fellows - I was just about to come down and see the Masser guy and take him off, but he saved me a job - I have a good mind to bill him for the downtime - if you work it out, the circuit was costing us around £3.5k an hour and he owes me around half of that for taking away our pleasure.

It was all my fault though - everytime we have an incident it is always some tool that has just turned up on the day and I am eager for the money in the tin - not any more though, i'll not fall for that one again. It's the same with shared cars - one extra driver is fine but thats it, i'm not letting a car out that has several drivers.

Glad you all had fun

See you at Oulton maybe?

Nick Wright
08-10-2010, 12:51 PM
Novice badges are fine in principle but no one ever takes them off - some new guys are well on the pace by lunchtime and then they end up with all the circuit because the rest of us are hanging back.

Some guys have been lots of times and still don't get the line - how do you discriminate?

If they have a novice badge and are on the pace not a problem, the alternative is hanging back for everyone which is what I was doing, if they are not novices you can make a judgement call to pass based on room, position, conditions. As long as you indicate also.

Just my 2p, although everyone is different :) I recently enjoyed a Pistenclub day with overtaking both sides. I used my mirrors and not a problem, everything flowed really well.

Oh and Nissan GTR's rewrote the rule book on lines :-D
