View Full Version : Very weird tyre wear

Just wanted opinions on this , running obviously the same camber both sides, but the drivers front has worn inside edge through to the wires :119:
Been running a set up Raeder in germany did on the monday AM when I was late arriving at Spa on our big trip a month or so ago , running a fair bit of camber -3 which is a bit too much for the road !!
Lazy so never change it  but still should be worn the same really I would of thought unless something is amiss :smt017
Car going down to a specialist next friday for a check up prior to Ring trip on Aug 6th, so just thought id see if anyone had any ideas ;)
Only noticed by a mate as I was pulling out on full lock !!!

Too much toe-out? ....but the camber is probably the main reason.

WOW !!! that is very unusual and what a waste of a decent CUP :bigcry: but IMHO I think it looks like your tyre has been rubbing on something rather then road wear ???
Have a look under the wheel arch to see rubber deposits on suspension components etc as a first port of call. ;)

Here's my pennies worth
TOO MUCH CAMBER & /OR TO SOFT ON BUMP
The main part of this wear is caused by heavy braking. the front suspension flexes under load, the distance between the top mount to the centre of the wheel decreases as the spring is compressed. so you were probably getting -5 camber under braking and thus at the same time only the inside of the tyre was touching the tarmac, which in turn heats the inside of the tyre up which increases the wear
I would try 2.5 camber and stiffer bumper and rebound settings

From the pics, it looks like that tyre is not far from being worn anyway?

Looks definitely like toe to me.
What camber and toe setting did they dial in?

Doesn't look like a toe issue to me actually as the tread blocks are all still relatively flat - i.e. no tell tale toe wear where the blocks rise on one end vs the other.
I agree with TANKSLAPPER'S assessment - Camber + lower compression (or front springs too soft).
Might want to check your front control arm bushings as if those are worn you'd be going to excessive toe out under braking, accelerating inner wear.

I still reckon your toe is out.
You hardly used it in anger at spa, have you done any trackdays since coming back?. If not the soft spring and compression is out as you wont induce this on road, just looks like plain old toe incorrect to me.

Hello Mate
No not been out in anger much, got the ring in 2/3 weeks and ive had those new softer springs fitted ( morning of spa ), car felt better but still not perfect, so im having it checked out, bushes etc etc as it may be that one of them is worn, prior to that have done 3/4 hard ring trips and silverstone and coombe, so had a bit of a beating but no wear on tyres like that before, and I use the car daily as I always have http://serve.mysmiley.net/confused/confused0006.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-war-smileys.php)
So will see what the guys come up with, going to reduce the camber a tad too also once im happy nothing is worn or gone ;)

Your tyres must have been ok when they set it up the morning of spa. As you would hope when doing a geo, they would notice very severe uneven tyre wear. Its usually first thing they record, tread depth/pressures etc.

Evening Daz,
I just had a thought.... (I don't get many) I'm just wondering if they adjusted the ride height when installing the softer springs?
If that wheel was set a little lower wouldn't that alter the geo? Or maybe the spring sagged a little more on that side? It's late tho and I'm tired and have had an odd beer so I may be talking a right old load of cobblers?:smokin:

My votes toe out. I've done this 2 or 3 times now (will I ever learn LOL) and the toe out was the problem - one recent example the tyres were perfect apart from down to the canvas like yours.
Not heard of Tankslappers suggestion before, so never considered that. But I did once drive 6 or 7 hours in Germany with Cups on and decent toe out, and when I got back from the trip the fronts were exactly like Daz's picture. I struggle to see how autobahn driving could result in this because of softer springs and too soft on bump - whereas toe out, effectively dragging the inside fronts along could definitely do it.

I meant to say I thought it was toe Aswell, I'm just wondering why one tyre was so much worse than the other? As you'd expect the tyres to scrub evenly with toe out

To be serious for a second...
Can you have only 1 wheel toeing out whilst driving? Wouldn't the wheels automatically centre? Or am I just being a :clown:

If your wheels automatically centred why would we need to adjust toe in the 1st place Jim;)
Come to Oulton park on the 7th, I'll give you a suspension/geo lesson:thumbs:

I think what he means is:
Say you set one wheel to a 'true' 0 toe in relation to the centre line of the car. Then set the other wheel to 0°10' toe out. When you drove the car, the wheels would 'centre' so that you effectively had each wheel driving as if it had 0°05' of toe out.
This is what would happen isn't it, therefore it would be impossible to have only one wheel toe-ing out?
