Dropped the CSL in to Technosport last week on the way to the airport and asked for a Spec I and to check out that dodgy noise I have...

Leak down test showing loss of pressure Cyl4 in to Cyl3 - so probable HG failure - but investigation continues!

Doh!

Off for a beer and a kebab (in Turkey)

Will be a very common S54 factor for cars being' tracked.

Mine and Duncans both done last twelve months about 60k+ miles, just wear and tear after all that heat and combustion

find my old thread Mole and take a look at my recommendations whilst it is in fir the work. I changed plugs, coilpacks, water pump, cleaned rads inside and out, thermostat, belts.

If you have warranty get them to do it.

Can't you get a stronger Gasket too? Just a thought, maybe some kind of racing type one?

Here's Shimmy's thread starting from Page 3 (http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2685&highlight=gasket&page=3)

The fear of upsetting anyone on here precludes me from giving any names away, everyone sees the job as they see it and quotes accordingly, but i take your point, Murketts quoted me £1,153 + vodka and tonic, that included Anti-freeze,Cyl head gasket and head bolts.

thats a good price for bmw

Simpsons did mine and i sepnt around £2k but the HG part cost me about £1k as i did loads of other bits at the same time.

YOur price will depend quite heavily on the damage to the head and valves obviously

Just back from going to see my car/George at Technosport....

Turns out the HG had gone between cyls 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 - only 5-6 still remaining!! Suprised it ran as well as it did to be honest.

There were some marks in a couple of the cylinders but he says it will be fine as they are above the rings.

There is what looks like a hairline crack in one of the cylinders in the head so head being crack tested and if required laser welded.

At this stage there are a few options including port/polish head, camshafts, ARP Head Stud kit.... all of which I am undecided about.

Then it's time to put it all back together again

Also things that Shim mentioned to think about whilst car is in bits!

George had a look at the map that I have on the car... he said that it's been hardly touched and isn't suprised I never really felt a difference, but all looks safe and wouldn't have caused the failure I have seen.

My motor is looking the same except I think I need a new cylinder head ... are they possible to be 'relined' ?

Is the std M3 head the same as the CSL - looking at 2nd options ?

Didn't notice it running much hotter than normal to be honest :whistle:Oil temp at last trackday did seem to be a bit high and stayed hot for longer than normal though.

You boys need data loggers to get exact temps rather than just damped gauge position ;)

Shane - for info the logs on my car show max water temp of 102 when oil was 152 C. Additional coolers now fitted but thought the ratio of oil to water temps may be interesting given what is being seen by others?

Another possible cause of this (just theorising here given that I had this failure recently without ANY warnings whatsoever) - faulty O2.

I had a faulty before cat O2 in bank 2 recently and this didn't throw any warning lights at all - the only reason I knew it was faulting was because I pretty much scan my car with my clone GT1 every week  and my Autoenginuity every other week.

Believe it or not the Autoenginuity picked the fault up first (no dash warning and no drivability issues, no missfire, nothing, it was perfect) - Autoenginuity showed it faulted 156 times and I turned on the datalog function on the autoenginuity and went out for a drive - the data record was more than obvious what was going on - and from what I can make out from the data feedback was it would have been running rather lean whenever thorttle load was over 50%.

Glad I caught this early and certainly very surprised that the knock sensors nor any engine warning lights showed up. What was even more surprising was the fact that the GT1 only showed this faulting twice, but came straight back when the codes were cleared.

Had the O2 replaced straight away and all is now good.

Moral of the story - scan your cars on a regular basis.
