Started broom this morning... battery light flashing !:banghead: ... think right alternator fooked.. but timing is about right as my car hasnt been into Murketts for almost a week now !
Then ... I hear subtle noises from under tut bonnet ... mmmm.. im hoping Alternator bearings perhaps collapsed ... nope ... faint rumble to top end of engine when just blipping and loading engine everso slightly.
So .... onto trailer and away it has gone :banghead:

Vanos perhaps? ..could be a number of things I suppose.

Latest is... they are going to disconnect the Alt to eliminate the possibility of bearing noise being transmitted through the engine, defo new alternator though ! ..happy days and I love BMW warranty solutions .

I have worked out that during my ownership of the CSL, it would have been more economical for BMW to pay me about £2,000 a month NOT to own one !!:hahaha:

Bad luck. Assuming it is the vanos could it be that it too needs running in?
At some point soon you will have a new car with the way you are going.

Update, Andy reckons it IS the alt bearings as I first premised, he reckons you can stand at different positions around the front of the car, and the noise comes from all angles, using a screwdriver as a steffa, stetho, ... one of those fookin things doctors use ! .. isolates it somewhat, and he has come across this before, and it was indeed the alt bearings sending the noise around the engine :smt102 ... Dolby surround engine ??:smt020... awaiting a reply to my email of a few moments ago.

Spot on then Dunc, you ran it in well enough mate so can't see it being an engine problem, Alt. is much quicker and easier to fix!

All is well, apologies for the delay, alternator solved the noise issue, and bigger speakers helped !

Glad its sorted under warranty for you Duncan.

Am surprised though... you've had way more warranty work in 9 months than I had in 3.5 years of ownership :(

From memory the only things I had replaced under warranty were clutch, diff, power steering (twice), RTABs, and a steering wheel.
