Yes we can - a company called personalised plate does it locally.

Cheers for the welcome Mark - will PM you my details. We have 10 official imports here in NZ (1 written off many years ago which was owned by BMW NZ) I know of 3 private imports, 2 from South African and one from the UK.

Hi NZ-M3, Your front plate looks very neat, and a great number. Is the substitue plate made from sign writing stick on material and regulation size? it looks a little smaller. I wonder if you will be hasseled at warrant time.
I also removed the original plate surround to fit a pair of laser gun jammers in the lower cowl opening and still need to get a couple of screw holes filled and bumper repainted, which i will do after a few more stone chips. I have on hold with Personalized Plates, the number CSLBMW but figure the standard issued plate is harder to read when occasionally you pass a row of cars too quick, and I may find myself on the six oclock news as the silver haired boy racer squaring off to Mr Plod.

Hey Rob good to see you finally post - see it wasn't soo hard was it
I actually don't have the stick on front plate any more - decided it wasn't worth the risk of a $200 fine from the gents in blue for an illegal plate - instead I've put the regular Europlate back on the front without drilling holes (double sided 3M automotive foam tape works a treat without damaging paint work or leaving any marks and are reasonably hard to pull off when you put enough on the back of the plate) - I'll post up a pic later on. I personally think it's a much better solution than drilling holes into a carbon fibre front bumper that cost more than a kidney or two.

Thanks for the welcome mark csl, all due to NZ_M3. who has been most helpful on many aspects of the car. I wasn't aware of how critical it is when jacking the car and Tom supplied detailed information.
It is a pity we don't have roads such as in Germany, France and Northern Italy. In NZ roads are still quite basic and speed limits are well enforced with no lea way or consideration on what you are driving. Sure the 100KM limit should apply for the many old clunkers on the road, but thoroughbred vehicles should be allowed a 125 Km limit on certain roads.
Maybe we need a portion of looped road 22km long and attract business as does Nurburgring. I wonder what income this track brings to the region. Is anyone aware of these figures?
It would be interesting to see the views of members on the consideration of raising speed limits for vehicles recognized as "the stable". These graded vehicles recognized by their special number plate. Could it be that these plates and upgraded license have to be earned by attending so many track driving school days?
What do you think readers?

I am with you NZCSLBMW the speed limit should be graded on your driving and the car you drive. It was in the 50s when they set speed limits and braking distances, it has all moved on from then
BUT IF THE FUEL KEEPS RISING WE WILL ALL BE ON BIKES :banghead:

Finally they are here ... will post up photos once installed.
Main reason for going with Alcon:
- Bolt on application - NO SPACERS to clear the CSL fronts
- Excellent range of pad choices
- Monoblock design
- huge 365mm discs
can't wait !!!

Looks awesome Tom,
Your so good at trolling the net for bits.
I was considering Movit http://www.movit.de/images/bmwcsl01.jpg
but your Alcon look smaller in the casting, and better for unsprung weight. Your CSL would have to be the most tricked in NZ. Cheers Rob

if you"re considering mov'it, go thru Mov'it scandinava
( http://www.movit-scandinavia.com/en/default.asp ) it's cheaper ( No V.A.T) because out of europe, so 20% less on final price, the contact name is Per ericsson
my friend has a Mov'it complete brake kit front and rear, it's really good stuff, in fact, mov'it iis simply Brembo's

Thanks for info David, What, in your engineering opinion, would be the best choice of brakes considering performance as a priority and value for money?
Hi Tom,
Using braided brake lines, will you have a hassel with MOT ? (Ministry of Transport re Warrant of Fitness) I have heard they don't approve this as they can't check behind the covering.
I expect your friendly garage will just issue the warrant.
Cheers Rob

The braided lines are completely legal and wofable - these lines are ATE braided lines which come with FMVSS106 standards (so WOF compliant in NZ - see Land Transport Rules Light Vehicle Brakes 2002 Rule 32014 - clause 2.5(5)(f))
Another braided line with the FMVSS106 standard is made by Goodridge. My personal opinion the ATEs have better fittings and clampings.
To be WOF compliable the lines must have the FMVSS106 tags on the lines itself - mine does and I've double checked the LVV rules and checked with my cert guy (I've also checked with three friends with WOF licences and they all said as long as it has the tags showing FMVSS106 then it's completely legal without a Low Volume Cert). I will still have to get a cert for the brake upgrade and the enlarged discs however - no trouble there as it's a bolt on kit (from one of the top three brands - Brembo, Alcon, AP Racing).
Rob before you consider Mov'it Just make sure that you have sufficient clearance - you can't legally run spacers larger than 5mm in NZ - that's why I didn't go with the stoptech or brembo kits.
The other option is the proven and popular AP Racing kit - but in my opinion the Alcon is a much better kit (monoblock ect, better pad choice and true floating design discs)
p.s. I've got the templates for virtually all the bolt on big brake kits out there for the CSL, and the Alcon has by far the lowest profile out of all the brake kits out there (even compared to the AP Racing) - the Alcon kit will actually fit under OEM 18inch wheels without using spacers.

Thanks for info Tom, great to hear provision for complying braided lines are in place. I like the look of your calipers. The brakes are the only soft spot on the car ( and my Continental tyres), I slightly buckled a disc by parking up when the brakes were quite hot, and making a ping ping noise, you could feel them moving on their shafts as you did a heavy brake but over time they have straightened again. Do you expect you wont have a problem like this with Alcon or better brakes?
At race meetings I have noticed some mechanics rock the car back and forth until the discs cool, and others don't worry , is this because of the quality of the gear they are using, some just won't distort?

Good habit not to let the car sit in one spot after a couple of hot laps around the circuit - I do it all the time when I used to hit the track with the integra racecar. The stock rotors will warp real easy if you don't have a cool down lap or two.
The Alcon discs are a true floating design - unlike the OEM design - these sit on a floating spring setup rather than a bolt down two piece setup - allowing for full proper thermo expansion. I've read several reports about the AP discs warping under hard use and have yet to come across one for the Alcon discs - I am guessing superior design for the Alcon discs. Either way I am not worried, as everything in the Alcon disc has a part number and you can order individual replacements parts, and seals and discs without the mounting bell.
Pad choices for those wondering about the Alcon kit.
Mintex MDB2607
Alcon 4497
Pagid U8028
SBS 3061
Ferodo FRP3081
The kit comes with the SBS pads (not the best but will do for now).
Should have these installed by the end of next week if all goes well.

Here are some photos of the brake kit fitted to a genuine M3 CSL here in Auckland, New Zealand. Zero issues with wheel clearance. I ended up trimming the brake dust cover to accommodate the larger discs (had to trim off about 1/4 of the total surface area).
I have to say I am absolutely blown away by how good these brakes are. Straight away the pedal feel, braking power and brake balance was more than apparant.
The mechanic that fitted these brakes for me works for BMW NZ and is one of the head mechanics for Mini Challenge Race series here in NZ, Porsche GT3 Cup Racing and NZ V8 touring car championships. He was impressed with the build quality, fitment and overall performance of these brakes. The certification process was straight forward with little to no issues (I had to get longer wheel bolts given the slight increase in disc bell thickness - yes a strange one in my opinion, but the cert guy's God when it comes to getting certification in NZ and for the car to be road legal, so we tracked down some 5 series wheels bolts which were slightly longer and did the job required - I've actually also got some longer ones coming from Turnermotorsport also).
As already stated in another post this kit is great in the sense that you don't need to run spacers on all OEM wheels, 18s, 19s, ZCP, CSL
You also have great brake pad choices, all the following fits:
Mintex MDB2607
Alcon 4497
Pagid U8028
SBS 3061
Ferodo FRP3081
The calipers themselves are 3.5kg each for those also wondering.
Now on with the photos.
If any of you want any specific shots of the kit, please let me know and I'll take them.
