View Full Version : Oil & Filter change

I changed my oil and filter today as the car is at the mid-point between services and i wanted it in tip top form for the Ring/Spa trip next weekend.
This was going to be a full 'how to' with photos but i found loads of similar stuff online already. So, i have simply listed that here for others to have easy reference. I found this a very straight forward job and it took about 45 minutes to do.
It was a fair bit cheaper than a BMW oil service too:
6 Litres of Castrol Edge 10W-60 - £56.65
BMW oil filter change kit - £11.43
Here are a couple of links that i found useful:

I just discovered, that "over here" in Denmark/Germany Castrol Edge is called Castrol TWS:
http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index.php?showtopic=20995
Both oils are the same, but with different branding. Mine had an oil change last week and I was wondering why BMW quoted me for Castrol TWS when more knowleadgeable CSLRegister told me to use Castrol Edge :-)

Thanks!
The display says OIL +0.5L though just after adding 5.5 and installing a new filter. Doesn't that mean I should add another 0.5L?
I know I really should read my manual, but it's way down in the glove compartment and I'm way up here in my couch!

After a change it tends to read between +0.5L to +1.0L (mine read +0.7L)
After your first decent drive it will settle at a more accurate reading and you can add more if required up to the max of +1.0L.
I leave mine at +0.8L or so as i do a few track outings and don't want too much additional oil floating around! I just add a little as it burns off over the miles.

Mine lost the dash display and showed --:-- again just before the Ring trip due to a few necessary short journeys, it has shown +1.0L beforehand but when it came back on the run up to the Eurotunnel it now reads +1.1L!? How can that be and is it normal and ok for it to actually go up?

Sounds like your electronic dip tick is playing up proper m8 :banghead: as the reading should have fallen a bit after the recent EURO jaunt  or U've put too much oil in her, initially. Get it checked by BMW... warranty solutions

Well it's going into Murkett's for it's Inspection II soon so I'll be making the list ready for Andy to check it over, I think there's around 2.5k miles left on it before inspection.
I've not put any oil in it since owning it so I've definately not over-filled it and it didn't lose/use any over the 1100 miles it covered at the recent Euro trip!?

M8... if you haven't put any oil in your CSL since your ownership, especially after a few UK Track Days and the recent EURO trip  U've either got an incredibly tight S54 engine :gayfight: or you're running low on oil :banghead: These engines are meant to use a bit of oil (I think something like 1 litre per 1500 miles or 1500 km ? ) If I were U I'd get the CF air box off and check your oil level the good-old fashioned way, with the hidden dip-stic beneath  Better be safe then sorry :bigcry: Video clip of "How To" below

Might have to try and do that over the weekend then, if it's fooking dry that is! :(
Does forcing a reading from the Sport button make any difference at all? I suppose IF it's not reading correctly then it won't!

Mate, it's not normal to consume oil, unless the engine started to wear out.
BMW gives this ridiculous amounts for 'warranty' reasons.
If the S54 consumes 1lt / 1000km, it is ranked as a 2-stroke engine.
Personally I change the oil every 5000 km.
As said (I forgot to hunt the technical specification, need to ask my brother), there is a bulletin saying that the dealers need to change the oilservice intervals for S54 powered cars from 25.000km to 12.500km.
Guys, I highly recommend you to change the oil very often in the S54 (unless you are Duncan and you change the engine oftenly ).
Matt, I will poke my brother to send me the bulletin today and then we can all go and push the dealers to do their job !

Well, in that case I'd better pre order my NEW S54 engine from Murketts, under Warranty then ;) :hahaha: Joking aside, I've mentioned this to Andy Pressland @ Murketts and he said the oil consumption on these S54 engines was quite normal, mine being less then some others he's seen, so now I'm a little confused on this issue. I've been keeping a keen eye on my CSL's oil consumption and over the last 7000 miles it's been in the region of 0.3 - 0.4 litre for every 1000 miles, depending of ambient temperatures and how hard it's been driven (i.e. commuting or mostly TD work) no prices for guessing my intended usage
I'd be VERY interested to see & read the official BMW bulletin, advising increased Oil change solutions.
Thank you please

Matt, mine doesn't consume any oil (now you will tell me you change it very quickly).
I do change the oil so frequently on my own and I am amazed about how thick the oil is only after 5000 km.
I can't imagine how the oil looks like after 20000 km (even though you would have added another 2 lt in the meantime).
I am sure that the oil consumption is related to the oil getting fecked up.
That's not good for this engine with F1-like piston speed.
BMW bulletin solutions later on
Thank you please
PS1 : Dan, change the oil oftenly, no matter what they tell you in the dealership
PS2 : it would be interesting to have stats from members with oil consumption and gas emissions, I am pretty sure the oil-thirsty cars will have more emissions

I couldnt tell you in all honesty how much oil mine uses as I change the oil after every trackday. The oil in the engine gets to 125*c so over a trackday running constantly at 125* I think it best to change it. The breakdown at that temp is significant.
Most the M3's we service use not a drop of oil over a 10k period so I suspect that Matts engine has some wear somewhere.
And in 1500 miles mine used not a drop.
Most manufacturers have a tolerance level for oil usage per 1000 miles.
1 litre per 1000 miles in most cases. So 10 litres of oil per service period is deemed ok. Too much IMO. Its to cover their own backs a some engines tolerances differ, many variables decide this, ie running in adhered to, hard acceleration when cold.
And If you guys are constantly putting oil in as Matt is, I suspect your running in period of low revs was definitely not adhered to on your CSL's.

Well, that'll explain your zero oil consumption m8 (lack of use :hahaha: :hahaha:) + yours is a lower mileage CSL then mine which I've owned now for 8 months :smt055 ... it's not a daily driver (weekends & TD fun only) but I love the CSL so much I've managed almost 7000 miles in that time. Five UK track days, two Ring Trips ( 77 laps so far  ) and one Spa trip ( my first ever 16 laps :supz: )
In that time I've changed the oil & filter once, in between the Inspection 2 it had, just before I bought it in October '09 and I'm about to do another in between services oil change, some 3000 miles away from the next scheduled BMW Oil Service

Cause
Poor fuel quality promotes faster oil ageing and thus a thickening of the engine oil
(oil sludging, predominantly in the cylinder head and sump).
Measure
In the event of a customer complaint, proceed as described below.
Generally applicable information:
BMW does not approve of any cleaning method that involves a flushing of the engine by
operating it with cleaning additives in the engine oil or by mixing diesel fuel with the engine oil.
Damage to the engine caused by this type of operation is not covered by the warranty.
This applies even if the flushing attempt is relatively short (e.g. 15 minutes) and at idling speed.
1) Procedure in the event of complaints concerning driving characteristics (oil sludging causing
idling complaints, misfiring, etc.):
- Read the DME fault code memory and clear it.
- Carry out an engine oil service.
- Change the coding to option 988 (maintenance interval level 2 coding = shortening of
oil service interval to 12,000 km):

The capacity is about 6.5L, but you only drain about 5.5L when doing an oil change.
