View Full Version : Prices of low mileage CSL's

Hi All.
I have just noticed that Cosmic Boys lovely 2995 mile car has sold and it would appear to have gone for over £50000. Does anyone know the actual amount?. I sold a SG 470 mile 54 plate car in 2008 for £45000 and would have thought something like that deserves a £50000 price tag now but 2995 miles is not that far away from 10000 miles which I have sold two of in the past two weeks. Silver Grey 04 plate 10800 mile car sold for £36000 and the black 10400 mile 04 plate car which I have just taked a deposit on for £37500. How can the extra £13000 be added on for 7000 miles difference. I have read the post and appreciate it has been detailed to the highest degree but either I have just given away two really cheap CSLs or I need to start detailing my low mileage cars. I would have sold a 3000 mile car for £40000 and my black detailed 54 plate 6350 mile car sold for the asking price of £37000 shows how a 3000 mile car selling for over £50000 was a lucky sale and a private no warrantied lucky sale if ever Ive seen one.
Please dont get me wrong, I have been trying to preserve the price of CSLs for the past 5 years of dealing in them, I Just cant see how the 7000 miles difference between my cars and the 3000 mile car is justified. Every 1000 miles done in the car would amount to a huge amount of depreciation and frankly you wouldnt buy it to drive it unless money wasnt an option.Anyone think I should put my black 10000 mile car up to £40000?maybe with a serious detail it might make £45000. Just kidding but seriously these cars in left hand drive form fetch considerably more than RHD cars, around 10-15000 pounds more mileage for mileage.
I know of quite a few sub 20000 mile rhd cars that will be coming available in the next year and I dont see the prices of these depreciating if theyre not driven but could the prices have started to rise already on the very low mileage cars. Seeing as they arent made anymore and the fact that they are shrinking in numbers for rhd cars ie cars that are stolen or written off and not repairable ( I know of 12 cars that are no longer with us and have heard alot more have have been exported to race series in europe) I would imagine theres probably only 350 cars left on the road in the uk.
It will eventually happen when the prices go throught the roof as the did with the E30 evo sport which were all around 13000 to 18000 for a really well sorted car back in 1998-2000. Now the cars have all covered alot more miles and are double that for sub 10000 kilometre cars. Wish Id have bought one back then but went the Integrale route. The CSL is the only reason I dont have an Integrale now although I will have another one day soon unless they keep going up in value. I sold my last yellow 24000 mile Evo 2 in 2007 for 18500 and that would be worth easily 25000 now possibly 30000:bigcry:.
maybe see some of you at the ring in September:thumbs:

Its not about you the seller its about the buyer....how do I know, I just paid a very high price for a 565 mile CSL.
I didn't want a 10,000 mile one simple as that. I could have bought a 15,000 mile one for $20k less but didn't even think twice about paying the extra.
I suspect the buyer of the $50k car felt as I did, that they were prepared to pay the premium for the low mileage and great condition.
Its also 7005 miles away from a 10,000 mile car!!

Nick
face facts , you have been selling your CSLs for well under the asking price for sometime now! just a quick calculation shows me you have not made the most by almost £165K in just 14 months.
Time to take up gardening seriously!;)

Another think to take into consideration Nick, you cannot call cosmic boys CSL "detailed" in any way, shape or form. The car was semi-dismantled and prepared to the highest concours level. Slightly different thing to a £400+ pro detail. If you imagine a car taken off the production line and never driven, that would be a fair representation of the condition. Every inch of the underside is as clean as the bodywork. Different ball park and I'm fairly sure you would loose bucket fulls of money if you spent the required time/money on similar preps.

Hmm something to take aim at thats for sure but with 929km shouldn't be too hard to have it perfect at least for a while anyway.
Here is one I did earlier..sorry it from that other German car maker that I have an affinity with

oh wow, that's mental, I mean why? Why have a car like the CSL and do that to it without driving it, was it investment, did he like taking cars apart and cleaning (is he OCD -if so I'm in Kent come on down). Looks great so the buyer, what is he going to do with it? I guess I'm not on the same wavelength here but I'm sure someone is going to explain it to me ;)

I agree with Eric... it's mental :smt120 to own a CSL and not drive it. Talk about self restraint :smt100 I couldn't do it. Cars are made to be used, it's their primary purpose, to transport us around. What a waste of a car :ban:

its bloody good business tho,i bought that car for 37 k a few years ago and sold it for 59 and a half this year ,was gonna go down the porsche rs route and have some trackday fun with some of the fairies on here ,but low and behold another csl came up with 5k on the clock, with an absolutely spotless interior,so im doing the same again ,bought it for 25k ,3 people already want to put a deposit on if it turns out like the last one ,which it will so hey presto ,ive got wind of an rs200 with below 1k on the clock coming up after winter so i may have a go for that.
thanks for the nice emails and comments from those who got in touch ,and as for the comment that started this thread from a certain trader lol,uve got more chance of nailing blancmange to ur ceiling than having a csl as nice as the one i sold

Fair enough comment about it being good business  if indeed that is your business . Seems U've done very well (financially) out of it but you still missed out on the CSL driving experience, especially with that "AS New" M3 CSL driving experience  Each to their own

Very good business, although I think if I was in the market for that kind of thing then I'd prefer it without those modifications, but that's just me. Clearly someone didn't mind and if it did fetch the rumoured £50k plus then respect! Job well done. That's only £9k less than what I paid, but mine was much lower mileage than this one

the wheels have been cast with a 12 mm thicker hub section so no need to use wheel spacers .both sets have been tested before painting ,x ray etc and are ok .magnesium has been used in wheels for years ,minilite etc but is costly.it is stronger than alloy but prone to brake dust corrosion if left on for a while .

CosmicBoy I dare say the 470 mile car I sold three years ago which I bought out of a private collection was as good a car but Im not in to spitefull chatter I just mearly thought I knew prices of these from the 44 different CSLs Ive sold. I also didnt realise that making the car in to something you couldnt drive would attract such a huge premium. How many hours does it take do detail it to this level and do you need to renew all the parts that deteriorate like the bonnet catches , wheels, tyres, brakes etc , If so it would make more sence for the high value. Hats off to you for such a clean car its certainly the cleanest one I know of now out there. Just need to know If I get a car with similar mile's on what I need to do and what time need's to be spent on the car to attract that sort of price.
Also the only reason I price my cars as I do is from the previous models I have sold. I try as much as possible to preach that these cars dont loose their value and if you dont drive them and theyll go up in value in the future so If you own a CSL surely I must be helping the values of these. If I started working on really small margins it would damage the prices of these as usually I always have about 15-25% of the CSLs on the market at any one time.
Shame theres a bad vibe from this as nothing bad was intended. Good luck with the 5k car Cosmic Boy.What price do you recon the three people will be willing to pay for that one. Looks like you've got a better source than I for the very low milers

hi nick, just read the private mail you sent me ,no you havent upset me at all mate ,personally i think ur a canny chap as we spoke a couple of years ago at length about low mile csl,s and it was just before i found the 2995 mile example ,i can remember you saying at the time that you,d sold a 400 mile car ,isle of man rings a bell .i was thankful for the advice you gave back then .
as with any car tho ,manufacturers try to make them as cheaply as they can and skimp if at all possible .hence hardly any paint in engine compartment ,boot area and underneath.even a new car with no miles on will develop rust on bolts.nuts ,fixings etc if left standing .and the paint finish on the exterior ,laquer depth etc is nothing to write home about considering how much these vehicles cost new.
i just wanted to make the car look as mint as possible ,it took about 18 months just a few hours here and there,to strip and refinish all items to an acceptable standard ,luckily i have access to replating equipment etc so it was a lot easier for me than it would be otherwise .
one thing i found suprising was the fact that not one bolt was torqued to the correct setting when i stripped it ,suppose thats mass production for you .
anyhow hope ur ok with that and please feel free to contact me on anything

Wow I didnt realise that people went in to that much detail and to remake and recoat other parts is amazing. I suppose you are detailing cars to a level where they are for collections only and not to be driven other than off a trailer at a show. Also well done for buying the 5k car for £25000. was that a full spec car? Do you know anyone who is looking for a car without aircon as I have a 19k car in Black coming available soon. Too be honest each to their own.
Yes the cars were built to be driven, however if a collector should choose to keep a low mileage concourse car then so be it. Some people get enjoyment out of driving a car and some get the same buz doing it up and showing it.
The main thing is that everyone enjoys the car no matter what they do with it. :smt077

:smt077
Have to agree with this, just look at the RSOC and some of the MK1 & MK2 Escorts these guys have
I tried it and bought a really low mileage 22b but couldnt resist the need to drive it so sold it on and bought my CSL.
Prerequisite for the CSL was that it had OVER 50K on the clock so it didnt loose to much money with me putting miles on it. At that mileage i recon they have taken the low - high mileage hit on the price tag so it's not me that losses out.

Horses for courses (and countries). I use the 22B as my track car now and the CSL as my daily
Import tax here is over 1/3 of the 'perceived' value of the car (an unrealistic value set by the government :banghead:) so you're better off getting the best car you can for the money because you'll be paying the same inport duty regardless..

interestingly it has a BMW Sat Nav installed where the ash tray was... was that an option in the UK?

Hi I have just joined the forum.
As the owner of a 3k miles csl im happy to see their value is still holding up very well.
I bought my car 3 years ago from a BMW dealer here in Northern Ireland for £40k. I thought it was hefty price back then.....but the car had only covered 495 miles and I simply had to have it.
It was a case of never finding another so close to new condition that made my mind up. I have never once regretted buying the car.
However much they increase in value I still dont think I would sell mine!!

Hi Conor,
Nice to see someone else from the province on here. You're motor sounds mint, but only 2500 miles in 3 years:eeek: I take it you have a collection of fun stuff to drive then. I've had mine for 5 years and put over 40k onto it, mainly on track, and loved every minute of it.

Hi Justin,
I'm sure your csl is great fun on the track! I wouldn't take mine to a track day as I would hate to put a mark on it. I also have an NI reg 3dr Sierra Cosworth with low miles,a group 1 spec Mk2 RS2000 road car,and a group 4 mk2 escort rally car. Never really get time to drive any of them, however intend to do a few rally's this summer in the new Group 4 escort.
I take it you go to Kirkistown trackdays?

Wow, nice collection of Fords, sounds like you're well into your rally cars. How did you find you're way into a CSL? When you look at the price of low mileage E30 M3s now you are onto a real winner in a few years time, if you decide to move it on.
Used to do Kirkistown trackdays all the time but only do 1 or 2 a year now. I leave the CSL on the continent for a good portion of the year and use it on a few of the euro tracks Nordschleife, Spa etc.

Thanks for welcome everyone.
Justin,
Ive had a lot of BMW's over the year's including e36/e46 m3s. The CSL was always on my wish list. So it wasn't hard to make my mind up when this car came up for sale.

I know that feeling, as we all do, see a car just have to have it oh its "that" much oh well its only money.
Same process I went through a month ago buying the 560 mile car down under

True - but there were plenty to choose from then. Now - it's a slightly different matter. All you need is 2 people with more money than sense and the bidding keeps going. I guess time will tell.......
