View Full Version : I bought a brand new 2003 CSL today!!

I was referred here as I had posted on M3 site but its great to find a CSL specific group

I found a 900km, Dec 2003 build CSL for sale last week and immediatley dumped my C63 Mercedes of 8 weeks and bought it today

Story goes like this...

First owner, an Aussie, lived in Singapore for what was supposed to be 2 years, saw a CSL overseas and decided he had to have one when he returned to Aust. Got his partner to find one in Australia which was the last of the 24 cars bought in to Australia. It supposed to be "engine unrestricted" you guys might help me out as to what that actually means.

He buys the car and has it put in to storeage till he returns only he is still in Singapore 6 years later.

Car has done 900km, thats right 900km, on the roller at the storeage facility has never actually been driven on the road ever as it got to the facility via tow truck.

I paid about 2/3 of new car price from 2004.

Looking forward to checking it out and changing all fluids and then running it in!!!!!!!

It has the radio and air con as did all cars that made it to Australia its too hot without air con over here

No pics yet don't collect till Friday.

That is Mega mate :thumbs: congratulations

Lowest I have heard and I thought Cosmicboys car was low on miles.....

Unrestricted means the 155 mph limiter was removed at factory - something owners could have done if they could produce racing licence....so it'll now do 250 mph ;)

wow, i know of somebody over here who has a CSL that does no mileage and he was offered more than original retail for it, which was refused as it aint up for sale but 2/3 of original for a car like that is top. Good luck with the running in. bet your glad to get out of that hooligan's machine and into something more focused and down right, er hooligan!

Good find - I'm very jealous! Pics as soon as you can please.

I wonder how long it will be before some of the more "used" cars start getting restored to their former glory. 5-10 years?

Congraulations!

From bmwmregistry.com:

"
A total of 1,358 E46 M3 CSLs were produced to European specification between June and December of 2003 in both left-hand drive (823 built) and right-hand drive (535 built) configuration. (This figure excludes an additional series of at least a dozen pre-production M3 CSL prototypes built between September of 2002 and February of 2003.

Thanks for the info re RHD cars there were definately 24 that came to Australia.

As this car is supposedly unrestricted.....haven't had that confirmed by BMW yet, what does that mean the likely top speed is now instead of the 155mph???

The clocks will tell you 180/185 MPH  ... a GPS device will be more accurate and read 168 MPH - 173 MPH as the manual gauges in the car tend to over read by quite a margin at that speed. ;)

Yes good point I was thinking about the run in bit might have to start from scratch.

Once I get all the fluids done and any computer upgrades done I'll probabaly invest in another set of rims with "normal" road tyres and keep the originals in case I display the car sometime. Won't cry if I kerb them that way!!!!

Always going to drive it but not a daily of course and I have it insured on the basis of less than 2500km per year.

We have "historic Plate" registration which means you can register the car cheaply but can only drive to car club event days, club meetings, repair shops etc.

Not sure I'll do that as you can't take it out for a spin when you feel like it:drool:

This is a unique circumstance, buyer wanted a premium for the the fact its a new car and I was happy to pay a premium, average price is a little above half original price for cars that have done 20,000km or so.

Not many to get a guide on as only 24 were delivered and at least 2 have gone to god.

Its not a hoax the car exists I have paid a depsoit but sadly the original books and keys could not be located and I refused to take delivery until that has happened. They were located late Friday but need to be couried to where the car is (car in one state, Victoria, books in another state , South Australia) so this means no car till Monday afternoon (Aust time).:banghead:

As a matter of interest, what price does an average mile (40k) CSL fetch in Oz?

I am planning to move to Queensland at the end of the year and plan to import the CSL with me. I don`t really want to leave it behind.

I do not plan to sell it, but it would be good to know it`s approx. value?

Hmm might have some bad news for you re the import.......you can't and then get it registered. You can drive it on the track but thats it or at least thats how I understand it to be....I'll do some checking on the DOTARS web site for you.

As to pricing if you can find one, we only got 24 cars out here, I would say around the $110k Aussie or around the $50k pound mark. yes more expensive than in the UK for sure but of course no use if it can't be registered!!!!!

You will need a low entry jack.

I previously owned a thing called a Walkinshaw Group A Commodore (Holden(GMH) V8 with help from Tom Walkinshaw it had a lip that is lower than the CSL and further in front so I made some 2 step ramps so getting it off the ground is no issue but didn't want to try the up in the air bit till I had a better jacking method.

My trolley jack has a round top which hopefully the part mentioned is bigger then all will be good...otherwise a new trolley jack with a flat plate is required it seems.

OK cleaning continues, is it as simple as it looks to remove the front black plastic that covers the bottom of the engine...want to get all the wax off it seems easier off the car than on.

Solved the problem with the rust in the brake discs, pics tomorrow after I finish the first one to see if you all approve.

Also want to remove the offending, rusting (hardly) rear muffler box so I can get it coated with a hight temp paint is that just a matter of undoing the flange bolts and then the taking the 2 nuts off the rubber blocks at the sides???

Thanks

This is a unique circumstance, buyer wanted a premium for the the fact its a new car and I was happy to pay a premium, average price is a little above half original price for cars that have done 20,000km or so.

Not many to get a guide on as only 24 were delivered and at least 2 have gone to god.

Seems to be a few different figures going around about how many, I had heard 24 from 3 different sources so your 27 is new information. Guess I'll check with BMW at some stage to clarify for sure. Fron CSL to Gallardo S nice!!!! I'm jealous.

27 is definitely correct... 'insider information'... 2 black and 25 grey...

there was a 360 in between the the CSL and the Gallardo... and if I could, I would have grabbed that CSL of yours... very good buy mate and keep on to it, it will definitely keep its value (at least here in australia)!

Had the car to BMW service today removed every fluid and changed them for new. I had the technicians in a flap, many had never seen a CSL let alone one that had done 900 odd kms.

Now what to do about tyres as it rains a lot here in Melbourne...perhaps just drive it on sunny days but tyres are 7 years old and despite lack of use are probably past their use by date.

I know its not startling news but the car was driven for over 50 consecutive kilometeres, certainly for the first time in its life, a fair bit of it nudging the max revs as recommended for the running in period.

Car sure feels sweet, just wants me to give it more, but I think I had better dump those 7 year old tyres before I get too clever!!

I have just read this post.

I have never seen a brand new BMW E46 M3 CSL before so it is fantastic to see the photographs.

Really shows up all the difference between this and the ones that have been advertised in the past.

Why are you selling?
