sounds like you need a 29'er.... all the the fun of a MTB but with bigger wheels...and you don't need to utter the word hybrid....which is for benders.

I have an older version of this, which has been a great bike..cost £800 ish:
http://fisherbikes.com/bike/model/hoo-koo-e-koo/detail
Would also rate Specialized, something like this is a good all rounder, friend just bought the Comp SL and is really pleased with it:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/rockhopper-sl-2010-mountain-bike-ec020001
This is not bad value, last years models are quite a good way to save a few quid: (not many sizes left tho')
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kona/caldera-2009-mountain-bike-ec017220
Would say go to your local bike store and have a good look at/sit on/try a few first... getting the right size is very important, and the right geometry. The Gary Fisher has a long top tube which suits me, whereas I find a GT very cramped for example.
If going to be mainly on road would get a hard tail (just front suspension) as opposed to full suspension ... lighter/less to maintain, IMHO would only have a full suss if doing serious off road stuff.
Good luck with it!
I have a 2005 Specialised P2 and it's taken everything I've thrown at it so far, stunning bike, it also has the Hope Hydraulic discs front and rear, amazing through rough trails, I can easily keep up with my mates Specialised Comp Big hit! :smokin: ;)
I am looking at something like this at the moment, just to hammer out a few road miles but will also accommodate me when the urge makes me want to do the odd drop in!
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/hardrock-disc-2010-mountain-bike-ec019400
Looks a very well built bike, is a Specialized so it's bound to be good and it's cheap as chips really too! ;)
http://fisherbikes.com/bike/model/mamba
this 29'er is the one i bought a few weeks ago it really performs very well indeed and work very well on road to with a high top end.
Also i am not sure if you are aware but if you are paying NI though your company/job then you can get the government to pay up to half the cost.

Thx folks - some good pointers. I had looked at cannondale, specialized and Scott.
Jibm - yep, that was the attraction. We have a cycle to work scheme at work which allows us to purchase a bike and have a monthly deduction made from salary before tax. Be rude not to take advantage !

Jonny (J13NYS) from here runs his own bike store and is one of the biggest Specialized agents in the UK. 'Cicli sport' in Moneymore.

Personally, I know nothing about mountain biking, but I was a keen rider when a teenager and would like to take it up again in the next couple of years. Age creeping up! :bigcry:

I go out most Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights thru the summer and all the guys have a range if bikes from £400-4000
and there is me with my 1985 Raleigh All Terrain which would pass circa racing bike if it had different handle bars.
Keeps me fit trying to keep up!
I'd go for a Specialized Stumpjumper. Where abouts in Herts do you go? Some reasonable singletrack around Harpenden and St Albans but S Wales is only 2.5 hrs away for a bit of Afan action.:smt055

We mainly run out of Welwyn Garden City in one of 3 directions, mostly towards Wheathampstead Codicote and over to Sandridge but other runs go out to Hertford and north of WGC

It's all about the weight of the bike, frame build quality and the quality of equipment that matters, not necessarily the Brand Name. I had a few TREK bikes in my short life until I got myself the current machine, few years ago. It's a "KLEIN" Mantra RACE of 1999 vintage (name I've never heard of until I got it) but with full ROCK SHOX SiD suspension, with Shimmano XTR equipment all round , hand Made in the USA entirely out of lightweight aluminium with MAVIC ceramic wheels. Cost NEW in excess of £4000 !!! luckily I didn't have to pay anything like that for it. Kind of similar in the way I bought my SG CSL

That looks very nice Matt, though a bit too "serious" for my requirements / likely frequency of use....
I need to buy new to take advantage of the scheme through work, but I admit, these things seem to be good value second hand...
Out of interest, what did you give for that ?

It's all the BIKE I'll ever need :hahaha: I guess you need something that is a compromise. Good for the commute yet usable for occasional off road excursions, without looking so ostentatious like my KLEIN :hahaha: which I only use for pleasure :smt112 Still, the rule of good equipment, lightweight frame and decent build quality apply. Buying last years model makes a lot of sense too, as you usually make a huge saving over NEW... here is a link to a useful BIKE web site I use for saving money

We normally head from Harpenden through Sandridge to Brocket Hall and back around Ayot St Lawrence. Look out for a carbon Epic.

Yanto, you'll need a front sus bike only (no rear - you will not get a good enough bike for your money) Giant, Scott, Kona, Specialized they will all do bikes that fit the bill and offer good value for money (never tried a cannondale the ones I like are always too expensive). The best thing to do is try a few as they all do slightly different Geo - having said that I've owned Kona, Scott and I'm on a Giant now and they are all different but you get used to the different Geo. I love my Giant XTC 2.5 which is about £800 new. Don't forget bike tech changes a lot every year the gear selection equipment gets lighter, smoother and stronger so don't compare something a few years old with something new and think it's the same just because they both say XTR!

Any excuse for a picture of my old PACE RC200F3. Really regret selling this.......if ever I find another I'll be snapping it up!

I'm currently riding an £750 Trek. It's not bad and now think a Specialized or Kona for similar money would have been a better bet.

I've had a Specialzed Rockhopper (Comp) for years now and I've got no complaints. I've used it for everything from cycling to work to pretty hardcore single track.
I'll also second chainreactioncycles as a top website too, I buy most my stuff from there.
