could it be what we call "A Damn Bad Day...."
Today was my first trackday since back in 2009, so got one place on "Le Mans" to start 2010, spent yesturday to check Csl top to bottom, cleaning brakes, changing pads oil and fluids levels and so on.....
Arrived in le Mans this morning around 8 AM, registed my car for track session and jumped on track... got 5 or 6 laps in to get the feeling and track in memory, heat up Cups and started some laps throddle to the floor... when I lost ignition on one cylinder, engin dash light came on with security mode @ 4000rpm Max.... got back in pits and started to check engin Bay with one or two local guys ... conclusion, spark plug or coil probably dead......and No spare with me....:banghead:
So around 10 AM, I had to call in my insurance for assistance to tow Csl away to the nearest garage and get it transfert tomorrow to the Bmw local dealer @ Le Mans
Second bad event, By looking the car been towed on the truck, I saw my front 380mm disc brake totally cracked with +/- 3mm gap on the external ring and crack going thru nearly to the bolting on the dish...:banghead: I'll have to change a pair or rotor too.... probably not cheap a set of 380x36mm disk kit
And so on...... Couldn't even find a rent a car to travel back home... None at all in rent a car offices around Le mans!!! or eventually 50 miles away in the nearest big town or around 7pm in Le Mans.... so got into a taxi to railway station, picked up the next train to Paris around 2pm, changed station, jump on an other train connection (delayed 1 hour 1/2)....
back in Normandy, jumped in a taxi and Nearly Arrived, I noticed that I'd forgotten my home keys and gate/alarm remote control..... where..? in the Csl...located in "Le Mans" ...:banghead: I had to wait an extra Hour out in the cold to see my Girlfriend arrive.... it's now 9:30pm.... took me nearly 12 hours to be back home.... and le Mans is only 150 miles away......
bloody Nightmare....:smt067

well.... shit happen's... Better to get that problem locally than get this around the ring or an other track fare away :smt085 I'm rather happy to have noticed the broken disk rather to see it smash around the track on time attack and see the car finish it a tirewall...
Dan, the 380x36 6p kit I have was sold under the name of TWR, the dish fabrication is unknowed to me, the 380mm is from stoptech and the caliper is a sort of AP 6P ( AP or Pagid reference goes in)
I made a single mistake when I bough it, I took drilled rotors even if all my friends said to me "take Slotted"...
I confirm now ... do not take drilled
Remember david, there is always someone worse off out there, chin up :smokin:

I'm not worried, it's not the end of the world... just a bloody sunday
I'll keep you updated about the Bmw dealer diagnostic & feedback I just hope it's just a story about a spark plug or a coil. On the other side I'm already working on my new BBK conversion Kit

Hi,
David- your woes are frustrating to say the least.
Just a guess from what you stated, are you running
the Bremi Coils ?
If so, change them all to the BMW ones, otherwise
you will be experincing 'Coil failure' issues again for sure.

The Gorilla.

I don't have a clue about the Coils references, They are probably the original ones, (car has only 35000miles) and none seem's to have been changed according to all the maintenance and Bills histories I have from the previous owners.
My Car should be arrived or on it's way to the Bmw Dealer around Le Mans today. I'll give a Ring around 4pm today to see what'up with reception of my car. But They won't make any diagnostic today on it, and probably not even this week.... Massive problem in France is to get a simple appointement for a bmw oil change it self, they are totally overbooked and sometime it takes up too 3 weeks to have an inspection One appointement... :smt012
No big deal, I'm leaving France this week for around 2 weeks for my work, so whatever time it take to get it done, I won't be able to get it back before first week of April.
Off course, if the diagnoctic brings out a coil problem, I'll have all spark plugs and coils changed out
Wait and See..

Yep, the gorilla is quite correct as usual - the original ones are a nightmare, well worth swapping them to the newer ones.

Hi,
Bounce- I do not think there is changeover
date as such, so its luck of the draw and
what was in the parts bin when your car
passed it by.
My CSL had Bemis in it when I purchased it
but it was S/H, so who knows.
Was the first thing I changed.

I was under the impression there was a part number change to the later ones? I don't know them by name only early and late, I may be wrong.

I all
Had just the the feedback of Bmw following the DIS Check done this morning Nothing broken, translate to english, the guy told me (it's not even very clear to me but it would say )
started with and followed with:
1) Misfire cylinder N°5 due to low petrol injection feed
2) Misfire cylinder N°5 safety engine mode engaged (ignition problem)
3) Safety mode engaged due to bad lambda measures
4) Misfire cylinder N°3 and 5
5) Catalyst protection mode engaged due to bad lambda measures
6) Misfire cylinder N°5 safety engine mode engaged (ignition problem)
I have No clue and no idea about what is really wrong, My petrol tank was not empty, still had around 1/4 of it, and the orange tank light low level was not on...
when I got the car out of the track an hour later engin cooled down, It started again on 6 and 3 miles driven on streetroad , I lost again one cylinder.
I got the tank filled up and the ignition on the cylinder never came back even by driving 2 or 3 miles...
On Bmw side, they started the car this morning let it run 30mn and all was ok (without changing any parts), they drove it around easy (due to the crack in the brake rotor) without any problems... it take it's 8000rpm and so on...
From there point of view, they suspect coil Cylinder N°5 and eventually the N°3 to be weak....
I took option and told them to change all coils and spark plugs and eventually change or clean injector and clean injections lines

how many miles David has your CSL done?

Hi,
The Bremi Coils were used by BMW from
the outset, then for whatever reason
they started with their 'own' COP which
were used on the X5/7's etc and so on.
The Bremi's were used up, and phased out
but they were already using its replacement.
Interestingly, all NA S54 Cars upto I think it
was late 2004 early 2005 got Bremi's !!
So with 10 BHP less, Bremi COP, solid
Front and rear Discs, even slower SMG
Software, the guys in Munich, apprently still
have some issues with North America.

The Gorilla.
