Hi chaps,

Are the updates for the SMG software available free...... ?
Just wanted to check.

While my car is being re-built they are going to check that it has been done - but I'm told it nearly a whole day !? and that isn't covered under warranty ?

Cheers,
Simon

From what im aware off it was a free update - recall, so if yours is under warranty should be covered, if not and you push hard im sure they can do a good will on it.

It was a recall so cant see why its not covered

Hi,

My understanding of the SMG software is that there is no update as
such.

The software is already in the ECU, but due to fact that it was
chewing up the drive train on the early S54 SMG Cars,
BMW in having substantial Warranty Claims, decided to 'pull'
it back, so as to reduce the stress on the drive train.

Hence why no matter what, there is a slight slur, unless your
driving with very high rpm, and everything else turned off.

The system was retarded back when the early cars were serviced etc,
and all new cars left the factory with the SMG in a sort of default setting.

The Upgrade as such, is just the wick being turned back up and
the shift patterns being recalibrated for the quicker changes that will
be required.

This in part explains why BMW felt the need to run the SMG with
a 'SAC' clutch system, so as to try and assist with the downshifts,
by trying to achieve the same clutch movment for every gear change.

Downshifting is much more complex on a 'paddle' operated system
than upshifting.

There are a number of private companies that can re-set and
re-calibrate the SMG software, if BMW give a hard time.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Thanks Gorilla - an excellent explanation of the issue.

The gearbox on mine is still on the floor - awaiting a part from Germany - on back order FFS :bigcry:

I'm going to have to learn how to drive again when it finally is finished !

I'm in the same boat , waiting for a new ECU after they had trouble re-programming after a new clutch/flywheel.They've given me a lovely 116i Sport. Not quite sure where the sporty bit is though !!
