I know its a totally different beast but i've just had the privilige or rather the quite scary and un-nerving opportunity to go for a ride in my cousins r35 GTR. He's upped the power to 602bhp and changed the discs to alcons.................
HOLY F**K is the only statement that is fitting here. I mean it, it is immense.

After finally getting over the performance this thing gives, the only other thing on my mind after wiping my arse and his passenger seat up was how shocking my brakes are in comparison. I know that it's known, that standard brakes let the csl down a bit but the 6 + 4 pot brembo's on the GTR (all be it with the alcon discs) showed me what i am missing out on. I was getting prices on ap's up until this point but now its a must to get them changed. So anyone getting rid or swapping back theirs, you know where to type.

You've made a great case for 'going back to standard' I'm sure anybody who was thinking about it re-thinking about it right about now!;)

Good luck finding some, I would say I love mine, they were on the list when I was looking for a CSL.

Funnt isn't it, they were on my "stay away" list when looking. Standard car was the top pick at the time..

Buy once and buy right with brakes though mate!

what did you have before? I had an S3 which really could do with upgrading but I also ran an Elise which really showed me the way with brakes, lovely out of the box so when I heard about the std not being the best.....

I know what they say about 'oh you mustn't buy an abused track car and if they have AP's it will have been punished, blah blah blah'. You can tell if a car has been cared for or not just by looking at it.

Don't be fooled by the BBK thing

your OEM brakes are good with race pads and fluid but can overheat

AP or Alcon are MORE than adequate for trackdays or racing. You've got to remember that the stopping power is affected by grip predominently of the Tyres.

I guarantee that no matter what brakes you add to my car the stoping power wil not be increased without tyre or other changes.

agreed, but when you have brakes fail due to heat on paddock hill bend at Brands it kind of focuses your mind!
Never again will it happen to me..:clown: of course I could have come in one lap earlier :banghead: Luckily with the correct gear selected, the fact that the brakes took some speed off and the wide exit point I escaped.
Brakes have always been something worth upgrading. It's all horses for course and if you do no track work then it's less important.

Fair comment regarding grip, and taken onboard. Though the overheat is exactly the difference that reared its head on this stretch of road. Repeated gas and brake, gas and brake. Csl faded after 3rd hard succesive brake and the brembo's...........well, just didn't.

Yep the cooling benefit of bigger disc with better vanes and race pads and fluid isn't in question

standard brakes are not crap just change pads fluid and lines, some people are just very hard on brakes ive never had any problems even at 32 degrees at the ring no fade awsome.Disc wear could also be problem many csl's running original discs that are worn so overheat quicker.:birdman:

I have to agree with U ;). The only problem with CSL's brakes are the O.E. pads (Textar :clown: I think) On the other hand the CSL floting discs are simply awesome :supz: Good to know they are also OK @ the Ring on a warm day.
I'm running Performance Friction "Z" Track Day pads all round, Goodridge braided hoses & ATE Racing Blue fluid and after four TDs so far, no major complaints or any fade. Then again I try not to use my brakes too much
