I might just add to this DIY if you don't mind Mark.
1. Disconnect the battery before you remove the airbag (no chance of the airbag warning light coming on) - if you don't disconnect the battery make sure you DON"T TURN ON THE IGNITION OR ANYTHING ELECTRICAL whilst the airbag is disconnected.
2. The Torque spec for the steering wheel bolt is 62.5Nm or 46ft-lb - best to torque this up to spec if you have a torque wrench.
3. Becareful when you pull the steering wheel off, sometimes the clock spring (the black plastic thing behind the steering wheel) can fall off ... if it falls off it's a pain in the ass to wind back together (usually requires buying a new clock spring from the dealer (very expensive).
4. To release the airbag you have to poke the screw driver on both sides of the steering wheel (I find 2'OClock position pointing about 20 degrees downwards is the best angle to release the spring clip).

Will be looking at doing this at the weekend Mark, cheers for that.
Any recommendations on changing the plastics facia and paddles over? I can do the paddles no bother I am sure, just the plastics I am worried about. Don't want to mark them, I'm sure they are easy enough though.
Cheers in advance,
Baz

New steering wheel fitted, BOOM! No bother, but without that video I wouldn't have had a CLUE how to remove the Airbag, cheers for that folks.
Trying to get the airbag out to fix my flappy paddles .. but just cant seem to find the springs with the screwdriver...
Seem to have the screwdrivers behind the airbag as it comes forward a little when I lever it a bit.. but obv that's not the way to get it out!
Have read these threads..
http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4098&highlight=airbag+removal
http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747&highlight=airbag+removal
and also saw this on youtube, looks like the same arrangement?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSYCOo_revw
Looks easy but I just don't have the knack!
From reading the threads and looking at the vids I should be:
- coming in from 2 o'clock position with a flathead screwdriver
- blade of the screwdriver horizontal
- pointing it slightly at the dash
Any more tips pls?!
Or any airbag popping experts in Southampton, Basingstoke, Portsmouth area-ish mind me popping by for your expertise, will buy you a beer!

Angle back with your screwdriver as if you angle forward it misses:thumbs:
Very helpful video; thank you!
Isn't there a risk of breaking the steering wheel lock this way?
Thanks,

This link doesn't work anymore? I have seen a similar vid on YouTube, but not for a csl. Having looked behind my steering wheel for the 2 holes to push the screwdriver in - I have 2 indentations but the "holes" are not there. Do I push through the rubber to make the holes myself?

Ok so today I took the steering wheel off in about 15 minutes and nothing so far broken....it's off to Jack at Royal for a new coat :) . Was fooled first by the fact my 16mm socket only fitted my 3/8 rachet but that was cooked so I had to buy a new one and a converter to 1/2 inch for peace of mind.
What I would add to the video and other instructions is:
Definitely disconnect the battery first.
I had trouble getting in to release one of the electrical connectors out but managed to stop myself from pulling on the cables :finga:. Feck knows how Mark(hands)CSL got his chubby little digits in there
Use medium size flat head screwdriver, it will go through the holes and much easier find the spring clips. You can sort of feel them if you have the head of the screwdriver flat and hot vertical.
You can do one side spring clip at a time, just get our fingers under the airbag once released to make sure it doesnt re-engage.
All I need to know now is " how do I change the flappy paddles when I get the wheel back.

Its actually very easy with the wheel off the car, its when the wheel is on the car that it can get tricky. The paddles just need a torx screwdriver to remove, sorry but I cant remember the size. A little spring will be on the end of the paddle. There's some pictures and instructions here
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=103430
All you really have to be aware of is to make sure that your micro switches that the paddles operate are in their correct position. They can slide over and close off the hole for the paddle tab if you're not careful. You probably wont be able to get the paddles into place if they've moved. With the wheel off the car you can easily move them about as needed through the area that the airbag would normally sit in. Also, make sure you put a very small dab of vaseline on each side of the tab on the end of the paddle that actually operate the switches.
If you are changing the paddles with the wheel still mounted, I read that there's less chance of the switches moving if you have each paddle at the 12 o'clock position as you undo the paddle mounting screw.
I changed my paddles out as well when I changed my stock M3 wheel for a CSL one. I just swapped over the trim piece so I still have the multi function stuff working. I now have larger AutoTecknic paddles and I find they are much better than the small standard ones. Much easier for your fingers to actually find the paddles when you're busy at the wheel :D

I'll swap the paddles back for better condition OeM ones I think. I've coped this long so I'm sure I can continue to make do with them.
HOWEVER, my two trims (Titan silver) now look awful. I think they are pricey to change for new so want are my options?

i think he had it about 12 days
Geez, nice work on the re-wrap of the wheel, it looks perfect!
I just had a look at prices for your wheel trim pieces, $370 for those 2 pieces!
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BL95&mospid=50641&btnr=32_1419&hg=32&fg=35
I bought a whole new wheel for $530 (minus airbag), they were on sale at the time! Sold my old leather bound stock M3 wheel for $200
As to your paint, only options are to buy new pieces, repaint, vinyl wrap or plasti dip them. Personally I'd try repainting them, just make sure you sand well with very fine sandpaper, few coats of primer and few coats of new paint. Just don't try to do it all in one day or your coats wont cure properly.
