What other tyres are people running apart from Cups? How do you rate them for road driving, and have you tried them on track? Finding the Hankook RS2's a little bit hopeless for winter user and thinking of maybe PS2's or someone even mentioned Falkens?

Going for 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rear fitment.

I use PS2 on the CSL as road tyres as they are also suitable for a bit of track action when the weather is too pants for Cups.

My E36 328 Sport currently has Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres which seem pretty good - on road at least...

I use

Vredestein Wintrac xtreme
255/35 R 19 96 W XL for the rear
235/35 R 19 91 W XL for the front

These are the only winter tyre that has a speed rate of 160mph

Basically, winter tyres work better then summer tyres when the temperature drops below 7 degrees
from November to March the average daily temp is below 7 degrees and wet in England

I think they will outperform PS2 in winter months I will use the cups from April to October as I always have done.

The odd track day in Winter I'll stick the cups back on.

I presume that on trackday's in Winter the Cups still reach a suitable operating temperature?

I use PS2's by the way craig but am yet to try them on track, wet dry or otherwise! :hahaha: :)

You might be surprised at just how competent these tyres can be on track Dan - they really aren't that far of Cup tyre performance when pushed hard IMHO

You just need to go out for longer session, as they take a little longer to come up to temperature.

GoodYear Eagle F1 Asymmetrico which IMHO are a great all rounder (Road & Track) , especially during the colder months ? Falkens (made by Dunlop) are also very good and great Value for money. How do U find the Hankook RS2's on track when the weather is right ? Camskills are doing a really good deal on them in 265/35/18

That's a great, proper Winter tyre  and as U say, the only one that has the 160 MPH speed rating as most Winter tyres are limited to 130 MPH. My daily E39 Touring has Winter boots on right now (Dunlop SP Winter Sport) and it makes a huge difference on the road at least, when it's this cold. They go on mid November and off at the end of March.

Well hopefully I'll find out at the Ring and Spa, still not sure what to put my cups on! :banghead: :hahaha:

Cool, at least they do get up to temp

Is it not an issue running a lower load rating than standard? IE 91 vs 95? this has put me off buying some tyres in the past.

I've done several Ring trips running solely on PS2 mate and they do very well there - remember it is just a big 'fast road' circuit after all with plenty of straight sections, and not as demanding on tyres as UK short tracks tend to be.

I tend to shove the Cups on the back seat and run out there on PS2s, fitting the Cups once out there. That way i have the best of both worlds and retain the PS2s should the weather turn shite :smokin:

If you just have the one set of wheels, i would fit the Cups to them as May - Oct are generally good months for PSC at the Ring

dont listen to the old woman - run on Cups all summer, no need for PS2. Cups ARE TYRES and need to be used

True, I'm not worried about the Ring killing them, if anything it would be Spa but seeing as I've never been there before I won't be going mental out on track that's for sure! :hahaha:

Seeing how Terry's GT3 was in the wet at Brands with R888's I'm wondering whether I just chuck the Cups on now and leave them on there!?

:birdman: I use Cups when on track, its just handy to save on uneccessary Cup tyre wear by using PS2s for the journey whilst having them as an option if it turns wet. A journey to the Ring and back is almost 1500 miles for me - not including any track miles whilst out there... :blalalala:

With a professional race driver and instructor at the helm of course...

Every situation is different of course, but i don't leave Cups fitted all year as it's predominantly wet where i live down here in West Cornwall and i really don't see the need to have 'Ultra High Performance' Cup tyres fitted for my 3 mile drive to work or the odd run to Tesco and back when not at track days...! :bigcry:

If i drove the 1500 mile round trip to the Ring and back only to have a sodden weekend of teetering around the track on Cup tyres at only two thirds my normal pace, then i'd be pretty fooked off! :banghead:

I didn't know who it was driving it to be honest, don't you know I'm a professional! (at something!?) :bigcry: :bigcry:

I'm not lucky enough to have 2 set's of wheels yet! :blalalala:

I currently have Falkens on, they seem OK for the money I guess, cant fault them other than that they are hard.

I run those too, albeit 265/30 on the rear. I'm not impressed by their performance in the cold / damp, but they come into their own on snow! On the PS2 I couldn't get anywhere but on these it's fine :smokin:

On these cold greasey road mornings though I find the levels of grip astonishingly low - lower than the PS2 possibly. It doesn't take much provocation to get the rear wheels spinning widely in 3rd or 4th gear below 60mph.

Update on the Hankook's there a cheap track day tyre and are really scary in winter (worse than R888's) however yesterday at Oulton when it was wet in the morning they were very vague, however when it dried out and the sun was shining I found them very good for the money!!

Same as Rob aka Glendog, PS2's for winter and wet track work.

Yeah, that's why they PS2 listed as a summer tyre.

Don't get me wrong I do think the PS2 are good for a wet track but cups are better on a damp track. And new cups can be better than part worn PS2 in the wet, but we are talking about a good road tyre on this thread. not track tyres.

If you are thinking PS2 are that good buy some for your Land Rover. lol
