Had a good day today
picked up my bargain 4.10 diff from BMSport
picked up a front rim from Gromit in superb condition (he has two rears in A1 condition needing a home)
picked up my SS race back box from David Ch.
And then to top it all after being told Costco wouldn't sell me 265/35/18 Cups as they are not OEM for the car , my local tyre guy said he'd do them for £800 a set.:supz:
off to Simpsons in the morning and Bath in the afternoon/evening so honk if you see me

Costco used to do member deals on 4 Michelins
they have changed now only to do mail out discounts 20% to some
members but they have to be Oem Tyres ( so 19 inch Cups on CSL should be ok?
I have a discount voucher but runs out Sunday so if anybody want to pop round and pick it up feel free.

I've had a great coule of days hooning around the west country.
Was at Simpsons today and saw a couple if members cars there. Got some stuff sorted ready for the car to go into BMW to get the rear subframe fixed and possibly a new clutch! (again)
got a boot full of of bits and a head full of ideas.
In the morning I'll be hanging out in Bath in the Bear from 8-11 so anybody nearby come in and say hi. Not off to work in Oxford until lunchtime and then backdown the M40/M25 before rush hour.

Hi Shimmy.
I've just bought a set of 4 Genuine BMW M3 18" 9J rears from your mate Mike in Essex to use as my Track wheels. They've been refurbed not too long ago in dark Anthracite and look V. COOL
My question is, what tyre size should I be considering for these... standard size of road tyres is 255/40/18 but they're not available in Track Day tyres sizes so my choice is either 255/35/18 or 265/35/18 (like the ones you're planing to get) Have U checked if fitting 9J 18" with 265/35/18 tyres poses any issues at the front  ... rubbing on the front wing on full lock ??? or getting too close to the suspension strut maybe ??? I'm running standard brake callipers, standard rebuild suspension and no spacers.

Cups come in 265/35/18 like the ones i have ordered. You may find other sizes in Yokos, Toyo T888 and Dunloip Direzas to better wuit the 9J but 265 should be ok as it is within tollerance.
I am not sure of the offset on the rear 18 inch M3 rims but my guess is they are about et25.
I would have thought that you should be ok on the front. Should clear the dampers ok as rims is narrower than the CSL rim. Only slight chance that you may fould the arch liner and arch on the front but that will depend on actual offset and your suspension set up (esp camber)

The off set of the BMW M3 18" 9J rears that I have is ET26 and the tyres I'm considering are: TOYO R888 265/35/18 @ £912 all in delivered (not fitted)... TOYO R1R 265/35/18 @ £ 868 all in delivered (not fitted)... or Dunlop DZ03G 265/35/18 @ £1100 (auch!) all in delivered (not fitted). Yokohama A048 in the same size are a whopping £1488 !!! not fitted . To be honest none of these deals are as good a deal that you have with your local tyre place of £800 for the same size set of Cups. Just to double check with U, is that £800 inc. VAT delivery & fitting for 4 X Michelin Pilot CUP 265/35/18 s ? Same tyres as recommended for the M3 CSL, just one wheel size smaller ?
BTW, I found a pix of someone on here who run this set up with Dunlop DZ02Gs in 265/35/18, although I see from the pix this CSL has aftermarket suspension and probably runs RACE cambers + the obvious AP racing anchors, which seem to clear the 18" 9J rears OK

i cant get any more 18 inch deals i am afraid. tried today but they can only do a few every so often for me.
Nords and Curly ran the Dg02 and got good deal as the DG03 were coming out i think. I think they are a pretty good alternative to Cups. T888 are good but maybe lack a bit of longevity when they get off (they go off quicker with our heavy cars). Try Pirelli PZero Corsa Race System (they look like the DG02s (see below)
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/pirelli/pi_pzero_corsa_ci2_l.jpg
best thing to do is buy/borrow some old 18 inch 255 or 265 tyres and try them on your front and see if your suspension needs to be modded and by how much

I was going to say the exact same thing to Matt, just be careful with the Toyo R888's, they don't have a very long operating window if you like and do 'go off' quite quickly with heavier cars!

Shame about the 18" Cup deal being so Limited to once in the Blue moon Shim  I've always got on very well with Dunlops as a road tyre so I hope their TD tyres are even better, especially if I get a good deal on either the older DZ 02s or the replacement DZ03G. Maybe it's his driving style :hahaha: ;) A good friend of mine has a Race prepared, only just road legal Porsche 928 GT, which is about the same weight as a CSL, on a set of 18" R888 and he swears by them. I saw these 18s on PH yesterday and was going to take them but had second thoughts. I run R888s (245/ 265) and are a great fast road/ track tyre IMO. Paid £600 a set. Heat up quick but do seem to go off quick too though, but then I do need to compare them to the Cups which I will be testing shortly in the new season.
glendog74
15-02-2010, 08:08 PM
It's pretty well documented both here and elsewhere that R888s aren't the ultimate track tyre for the M3 or CSL.
Michelin PSC are the most expensive but they are supposed to be the best and i go with majority opinion when it comes to choices like that for track days - i have certainly had good experience with PSC and justify the extra £££ over lesser tyres whether 19" or otherwise imho
I also use Michelin PS2 as my road tyres for similar justification as they can also cope with some track abuse and are a safe bet when the track day is a wet one.
Tyres are one area that i want the best for my CSL... :smt055

It was indeed. Intrax suspension and APs alround meant that the DZ02 were excellent. Dropped the pressures to 25 psi so they rose to 33 psi hot giving no understeer and excellent stability under brakes (left them on least camber with the adj top mounts, so guessing -1.5 degrees?) They were rear M3 rims alround but Hazy has them now! Going with cups for the few trackdays I get to do!

I have used the dunlop for the last 4+ years, they are fantastic. I have run them on BBS rims and for the last 3ish years OZ ultraleggra 18', 265 all round, (which look stunning in gunmetal against black car) Intrax and -3 deg all round suit the tyre and the car handling is superb.
As already mentioned Toyo's dont work. I tried really hard years ago to set the car up on these and it felt awful, I used 18' E46 M3 alloys with 235/265 combo, no bite on turn in at all, went off very quickly, they are good on light cars only.
For me, the only 2 tyres to use are cups and dunlops. The price of the new DZ03 is eye watering but i honestly believe it is a step ahead of the cup, it will also last longer, if you can afford/justify it, buy them.
There are deals to be had on 285 (not 265) DZ03's so if anyone is buying new 18' rims think about this, maybe 10' wide, I ran these and sold them to a forum member a few years back.
Other tyres to consider are the Avon ZZR, avaliable in 265 and also Kumho V70. A curve ball tyre is also the Federal SS595RS, may not appeal to tyre snobs but I have experinced this on a E36 track car and they work.....and last.

I really would like to get the Dunlop DZ03Gs but the best deal I've found so far is £275 all in delivered each (£1100 :smt107 for a set) Incidentally this is the third time I've heard someone recommending the Kumho V70... http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m12b0s670p1899
... and it's the second time I've heard a recommendation for the "Happy Shopper" Federal SS 595 RS which are on a SPECIAL @ camskills at the moment, £ 582.12 for a full set of four, all inc. & delivered ...

Just incase you're wondering about the TOYO & Yokohama prices for the 265/35/18 , I've made the enquiry yesterday and they are as follow:
Yokohama A048 £ 327 each
TOYO R888 £ 228 each
TOYO R1R £ 217 each ... this is a NEW addition to TOYO range and it's a half way house between T1R and R888

I did a fair bit of research into sourcing Michelin PS Cup tyres last year before the track season started and it seems that Michelin keep a very tight rein on their suppliers and control any discounts given - which are at best minimal to say the least... :banghead:

Has anyone considered the possibility of 1 set of 4 tyres NOT necessarily being being the best option? Given that you have a drive axle and a steering axle, is it not beyond the realms of possibility that you could run 2 different types which provide the best solution ?... just a thought from someone who hasnt done a lot of this !:)

no reason why you cant do that, but imagine the hassle of trialing and getting it right or wrong!!
my best choice for front and back would be;
Front Michelin Cup
Rear Michelin Cup

I was running yoko a048 last year, got 1 day left in them, then Im on to my dz03, I will give a direct comparison between the 2.
I want to try a set of cups to see what the fuss is about, see whether placebo effect rules or if they are actually good.
The a048 were good, didnt go off for a long time, I felt they lacked a tiny bit of initial turn in bite, although that could be A) my driving B) my geo/susp set up C) the tyres. D) combination of all/some
Ill run the a048 back to back with the dz03g then hopefully ill run a set of cups back to back with the dz03g. See if there is a noticeable difference.
I have tried the 888 on my evo, my business partner ran the a048 at the time, the a048 were far better.
888 only good for 3 laps of oulton park then go off very quickly, tried to compensate with different pressures, different damper settings, different roll bar settings, all to no avail. 3 laps then off.
As for the other toyo inbetween 888 and t1r, well it will be shit. Probably last as long as you do in bed, Mattcsl (2 stroke engine springs to mind):hahaha::hahaha:;)
Stick with dzo3g/a048/ps cup/slicks or road tyres for pussy days, My a048 were fine for a very very wet oulton park.
