Roof blemish / laquer issue

Alright lads. No been on here in too long - no idea how Im gonna catch up on all the posts! Hope everyones well and still enjoying their motors. Iv been too busy to drive, so only done 1000 miles since may 09 :banghead:

Anyway, Ive a little issue with my roof... Seems to be a problem with the laquer. It feels a little rough and is about the area of a 20p piece. Its above the rear quater window, around the centre of it. Hard to capture in a photo (will try harder at weekend with SLR - camera not merc!). Baz has something similar on his in similar position so thinking its a manufacturing fault rather as mine/ previous owners / seagulls... :hahaha:

Had BMW area manager technician look at it (quite literally glance) last year and he got back saying it wasnt covered under warranty. After a few words with BMW customer services, the manager eventually phoned back saying it had been deemed a water mark which is a 'cosmetic' issue, therefore not covered under warranty. Ive an independant coming for a look, so will see what he says.

In the meantime, have a look yourself. Any info/ experience would be much appreciated. :beer:

Any good body shop should be able to do/ head you in the right direction. It can be rubbed down & re-lacquered easily, no issues.

Something has previously damaged the lacquer I would say, bird shit or something, rather than a manufacturing fault IMO.

A good body shop can rub it down and re-lacquer it with no problems, should be around £100 for a panel from a decent place, I wouldnt be paying anymore than that mate.

hello bryce, i'm guessing here :whistle:... but i reckon water has got inbetween the lacquer and the carbon fibre via the gap where the edge of the roof meets the trim (looks like its on the edge). i think those little bubble/white marks are water vapor under the lacquer. i've never taken off the trim piece on the roof to have a look but i think the edges of the CF panel wont have lacquer on, which may leave an area for water to get in.

That's definitely the clear coat separating from the carbon fiber - I've seen that numerous times on recoated carbon splitters (actually had a set that was done so bad that you could physically peel the clear off with your hand).

Has the roof ever been recoated? If so, the paint shop may have used the incorrect system - and this is the result.

Thanks TMAQ, you could be right enough because its right on the edge.

As far as Im aware the roof has never been touched so IMO this should be a warranty job? Am I right?
