Hi there Oilman...
I've noticed (in the past) that there are two kinds of Castrol 10W60 oils, one of which states "Specifically for BMW M cars" ... what's the difference ? :smt017 (if any)

It has a good shelf live, approx 5 years or so. Ideal for stocking up.
It takes approx 5.5ltr.

There is no difference, same oil different tub.
TWS is sold through the dealer network and then it is bottled as Edge for the retail market.
For the non M series engines the dealers use Castrol SLX proffesional, again the same oil is sold as Edge to the retail world.

Which two edge? There is a difference between the Castrol Edge 10w-60 and the Edge Sport 10w-60, for the M series you want the Edge 10w-60.
Though to be honest, any good quality synthetic 10w-60 will be fine and there are better ones out there then the Castrol...

I fully understand the differences between the 2 oils, you refered to the 2 different oils as edge, I was merely trying to clarify for others as your post I highlighted may confuse them. As you did not include the sport bit in your above post.;)
I know you are now millers oils dealers, we have an account with millers oils. I have run the 10w60 for years in my high powered evos. Would you recommend this for use in the M3? As we get it for much cheaper than Castrol

Yes of course the Millers 10w-60 will be just fine. If you are under any form of BMW warranty then you need to use the approved Castrol stuff, thats the way it works and is a deal between Castrol and BMW.
All the engine is looking for is a viscosity, in this case 10w-60. Obviously a good one is needed though and the Millers CFS us more then up to the job.

DOH ! :clown: right over me head that one :hahaha:
Seriously though, how does it differ to the "Special M cars only" EDGE 10W60 ? and can this be used in the CSL ?
Surely if it's designed for high power TURBO cars producing very high internal temperatures, it should be perfectly fine for the CSL ? NO ?

Hmmmm :smt017 not quite Bret ;) :hahaha: as BMW also say it's OK to change that said oil just the once, every 12K miles and we all know there is a bulletin floating about (come on Alexk ;) ) that recommends far more frequent oil changes on our S54 engines. Considering some (cough, cough  ) CSLs are used mainly on Track I for one don't trust everything BMW say . Looking at the technical data both EDGE oils are very similar so I wonder how one 10W60 Edge oil is not quite as good as the other. Since I change my oil every 4000 miles (that's two additional oil & filter changes in between scheduled BMW service intervals) would there be any noticible differences with detrimental consequences ?
I've e-mailed the Oilman this question directly.

Spot on. The Edge Sport is for other things, like some Alfas, Astons, Ferraris and a couple of bikes, although with the price of Astons and Ferraris, surely paying a couple of quid extra and using the better Edge for M-series is worth it. I don't really understand why they make the Edge Sport as it tends only to be relatively expensive cars that use a 10w-60 and there's no point in cutting corners with the oil.

The Edge 10w-60 has an ester content, which the Edge Sport doesn't and that makes the Edge a better choice for track use as it's a better lubricant and more stable at higher temps.

THANX Oilman... Ester content making the oil more stable at high temperatures is good enough reason for me to keep using EDGE 10W60 M-series  and I agree with you on WHY? bother having Edge SPORT, when the EDGE M-Series is a better oil.

But realisticly if your doing oil changes often anyway I recon both are fine. I use edge sport in mine and do oil changes every 5000km's or after every track day. I know mine isn't a CSL but it does make 400rwkw and never been an issue with edge sport.
I personally think the only reason to stick to edge/TWS is if you stick to the factory BMW servicing which I don't recommend. It's too far between. But if you do I think that would justify staying with using the factory oil.

I hear what your saying  I do have my CSL serviced by BMW Main Dealer as it's under their Warranty (and a requirement) + I feel it's best to keep that up on a car like the CSL., however it being my weekend TD worrier :supz: I change the oil at least twice (every 4000 miles) in between scheduled BMW services as it's oil does get a proper work out (I have seen the oil temp gauge nearing the 125 deg C marker on a few Ring laps
We're all waiting to hear back from Alexk who has a copy of bulletin expressing similar sentiment about more frequent oil changes for the S54 engine  Should be an interesting read.

The way I see it is that the Edge is the better oil due to the ester content, so for an extra £5 or so per change (and that's without considering our offers), you'd may as well go for the Edge

I agree... the tiny extra cost isn't the issue here. I was just curious why there were two such similar Castrol 10W60 oils :smt017 considering the kind of cars that require this oils. Surely a Ferrari owner would want the very best oil possible for their pride & joy, just like any CSL owners.

I think it's because Castrol like to confuse people. With the minimal price difference, I can't see any other reason to make the two oils. When I say minimal price difference, that's with us, it may be different elsewhere.

I know every country is a bit different but I will tell you what I was told over here.
In Australia we don't get Castrol Edge. We get Edge Sport and TWS. I rang castrol themselves to get an explanation and spoke to a tech. about it. He explained that the original contract with BMW for TWS was that Castrol would supply all these oil tests to BMW for them to use and recommend their oil. They did all these expensive tests and BMW used it. Castrol updated all their oils and wanted to release Edge Sport and drop the old TWS cause it was the same thing just older technology. BMW again asked for all the expensive tests for them to recommend it and Castrol told them they weren't going to pay for it this time. So BMW told them to get stuffed that they won't endorse the new product and due to the contract for the TWS they still have to make and stock it. But as far as Castrol are concerned Edge Sport supersedes TWS.

Castrol are a bit weird with some things. TWS is exactly the same as Edge, so the 'older technology' stuff is nonsense, unless the formula is different in Australia and I can't see them doing that when the oil was made for a certain type of engine. I wouldn't bother asking Castrol as most of the time they will just folllow the 'corporate line'
