Seems there is a considerable £££ difference between 18" rubber and 19" rubber. Genuine M3 18' can be had for peanuts and 18" R888 for around £600 as oppose to £1200 ish for 19" R888. Cups about the same in 19" CSL sizes.

R888 aren't meant to be that good on a CSL, so little difference between the 18 / 19 cups

I'm willing to experiment and find out for myself ;) They can't be completely useless. I've experienced "Flatout's" Z4M Coupe (with 18" R888s) that beged to differ  and a m8 of mine runs a Porker 928 GT (the Manual one) Race car with a set of 18" R888, with great success.

well my original thought was that as i have a stack of 19 inch Cups i might as well get new lighter stiffer 19 inch rims. But the more i look and looking at some recommendations like Thorney on the 18 inch Rays i reckon i can get the rims about £400 cheaper, 1kg per corner lighter and stiffer on 18 inch rims over 19 inch rims and the Cup tyres (dont forget they will be 265 all round) are adding up to about £100+ cheaper a set. so currently if they are availabel in time i will be going 18 inch - but nothing for certain:smokin:

I have seen R888 on road M3s and GT3s and the main difeences seem to be that;
1.R888 are better in the standing wet stuff
2.R888 are only very slightly cheaper now
3. R888 do overheat quicker on road cars
4. Cups are generally slightly better and grippier in dry conditions
Item 3 is important. R888 on a heavy car like the M3/CSL at over 1400kg + driver seem to go off (overheat) after say 3-4 hot laps whereas Cups take a few laps more. Overheating means your grip goes away and the tyres loose lifespan. Now this can be managed but 3-4 laps isnt very many!
R888 seem to work much better on slightly lighter cars, not sure how heavy the Z4M is but race cars tend to be circa 1100Kg max

All interesting stuff Shimmy , received with THANX however calling a CSL "Heavy" sounds a touch mad (remember it's a 4 seater ) + Z4M s are a bit heavier (1495 kg unladen, against CSLs 1460 kg) for a base , no speck car, however most Z4M have Pro Sat Nav, Bluetooth, electric this & that which tips them well over the 1500 kg, with ease. That's "Heavy" for a 2 seater, no disrespect to the Z4M owners, or their car which I happen to like.
glendog74

For track work purposes, most modern 'M's are considered heavy; CSL included. They all work their tyres (and indeed brakes) hard in standard form.

I will be bringing my GoPro Motorsports Hero Wide 5MP Camera with me, the small waterproof one, so not much sound quality im afraid. If anyone wants to record a lap ..discretely !! they can borrow it, would suggest that you take a PAX with you, get through barrier first, feign injury over to the side just past the cones and then plonk it on the dash/screen, and take it off again after the gantry somewhere
As i have no rear seats in mine, I have a bit of space spare for tyres/wheels, I have cups on the set of BBS wheels i have, size 265 35 18
wheels are BBS type RG773H 10J X 18 with 25 mm offset. They fit on the rear of mine with a 10mm spacer fine, anyone know if they will fit on the front though? from what I have seen on here it may be doubtful, and Im not convinced about doing it due to the increased loading etc. If i take 2 of the BBS rims with cups, they can be spares for my rear, or perhaps anyone elses with 10mm spacers, WONDER WHAT RUNNING WITH cUPS ON REAR AND ps2'S ON FRONT WILL BE LIKE !bollox caps again, thought i had got over that ! sorry. Alternatively, I could swap my 4 x PS2's on 19" CSL rims for new Cups, and take a chance on it being wet, and take 2 x 18" BBS rims with Cups, and a couple of 19" PS2's.....the question is, will I look uncool running 2 x 18" BBS rims on the rear with 2 x CSL rims on the front ??...... bollocks I forgot what I was going to say now !!:bigcry:

If the z4m was good after 3 laps on the 888 then you were driving it like pussies.
888 are ok but go off after 3 ish hard laps, very quickly.
They may be ok i my m3 now its lighter than a csl.

"Health & Safety" is to blame for that I guess :bigcry:. Over the years all cars have grown in size and inevitably put on weight however they have also increased in power  . I know it would be NICE to have a 1000 kg CSL like the original E30 m3 but with the "safety in mind" way the E46 is constructed, it's going to be hard work to achieve that for a "Fast Road/Track" M3 CSL. The current M3 convertible or the M6/M5 are heavy so in relative terms the M3 CSL should be though of as a medium light weight
