Morning guys, just a quick question might be nothing (I hope!) might be unusual..

On the way to work this morning I was scrolling through the options on the dash, outside temp, time, mpg etc etc and happened to go past the oil service tab, it usually says 1.0L but this morning it displayed -:- !?

This was first thing, I'd done about half a mile if that in the car so really it was stone cold, the cars not go hot coming to work but it still showed that, is this normal when the car is still cold and the rev lights haven't all gone out?

Please say it's normal! :bigcry: :bigcry:

Thanks

Yeah, don't worry about it. If you've parked on a slope a lot or do a number of shortish journeys it's re-calculating the oil level. Sometime takes a while. Take it for a good drive and it'll be back soon. Something to do with not being able to get a consistent reading.

Mine does this now and then but always comes back.

There is a way of recalibrating the readout manually but someone far more intelligent than me will be along shortly to tell you how....................;)

Ahh good I hope all is normal then! The car felt strong as an Ox yesterday whilst overtaking a Testerosa and another BMW Coupe at silly high speeds so I don't think it's out of oil! :bigcry:

Thanks Alex, will take it for a long'ish drive at lunchtime and see how I get on, car is always parked on the flat though btw :)

I'm sure the oil pressure light would come on if its was short of the stuff;):smokin:

Yeah I would hope so mate! lol It's just annoying that it's ceased to read the level for a while!? :banghead:

Just been for a nice little drive in my lunch hour and got the car nice and warm, all dash warm up light out, oil and water up to temp and it's still not playing ball!?

I'm beginning to regret showing the Ferrari what it could do at 140+mph yesterday! :hahaha: :bigcry:

You know what Dunc, you've really filled me full of confidence today! :bigcry: :bigcry:

I'll keep an eye (fret like fuck) over it for a few days and see how I get on, unless anyone can tell if there is anway of resetting it?

Might give my local Indy a bell tomoz? Either that or might finally buy some BMW warranty tomoz! :bigcry: :bigcry: :hahaha:

Battery disconnect ??? Maybe chuck in half a litre of 10W60 or get down to your local Indy and get them do a diagnostic check for faults.

Don't want to over fill it though mate, it was reading 1.0L beforehand, will give my Indy a call in the morning and see what they say, might pop up there saturday morning if they can reset it :)

Thanks MD, that thread makes a lot of sense, I do very short journeys morning and night, trying to extend it a little at the moment for this reason, thanks for the link :)

No, I know m8... I was only joking ;) about chucking in more oil. Best get advise from those in the know. I'm sure your local Indy will sort U out

Dan, as I mentioned there is no need to worry at all. If it's used for short journeys it'll do that. It needs longer runs to properly calc the level.

As Shimmy said, mine also does it after TD's but comes back after 30 miles or so.

Sounds like a good excuse to take the carbon intake off and measure it the old fashioned way!

Worth knowing how to do it... did it on mine every so often until had the oil level sensor replaced. (as it was faulty)

While you're there you can clean out the intake trumpets, remove grit in the airbox, check you have the later design air filter etc

Hi Dan, what's the later design air filter, any benefit and how do I tell? lol

You got yours out yet this year, roads are dry now you know!? ;)

Later filter has more sealing/foam round the bottom edge to stop grit getting into the airbox .. see link on here somewhere on how to get at the filter and at:

She's not been out for a while, finally now the roads are clear been too busy, but must go for a blast ASAP, hope yours is going well, must meet up!

Here's some info on Oil level checks from the pages of the CSL Supplement booklet, that might be of help to U Dan.

Thanks Mat, much appreciated, have left the car idling today whilst I washed it and get it nice and warm, used the sport button to check the level and it came up as 1.1L (where as is was always 1.0L before hand) I assume this is ok?

The main Oil Level in the dash however still hasn't come back, is it worth going on a nice long journey somewhere and just racking up say 30+ miles all at once and seeing what happens?

It frustrates me when things don't work as they should! :(

EDIT: Is it worth checking and clearing any fault codes to reset it do you think?

No worries Dan  1.1L is what mine read by pressing the SPORT button, before yesterdays TD @ Bedford, even though the OBC oil reading said 0.4L. After the drive from Cambridge to Bedford and the morning TD session the oil reading on the OBC reset itself from 0.4L to 0.9L. Pressing the SPORT button confirmed it was 0.9L., so a decent 30+ mile drive should (hopefully) get an oil reading on your OBC. Good luck

Well before ringing my Indy I'll give the car a bloody good run out, might pop up to Southampton or something and see how I get on :)

How did your trackday go then matey? Any new pics!?
