Interested to know how many have a/m back boxes and what they are.

After track day at Bedford last Saturday where I got pulled for ALMOST pinging the sound monitor at end of back straight, I would be loathe to put anything else on it, as it would appear that the options make it sound better, but i dont know if sound better also means louder...comments please ? After returning to pits and being checked I was allowed out again.
For info my reading at the stationary check was 80dB taken @ 4500 rpm.

I've been black flagged and sent home twice from bedford with a standard exhaust, depending on atmospheric conditions the induction and set off the meters so it may have been that?

At Brands yesterday, my CSL's reading @ 70% RPM (5500 RPM) was 89 dB. That's with a standard O.E. CSL back box (different to a regular E46 M3 back box) but the Supersprint 100 cell cats + Stainless Steel mid section must have been liberating some of the sound. It's still very purposeful in action but relaxing and quiet on motorways and I can enjoy the induction noise more   I wonder what would have been if I left the light weight MK2 MILLTEK back box on ?!?!

IMHO, the louder the better is a "No! No!" ... my MILLTEK is proof of that.

They are idiots at Bedford sometimes! I had a couple of days without issue but on one occasion last year I was told by the noise tester as I arrived that I'd better cruise round because "these things" (CSL's) have exhausts that are too loud! I told him it was a standard car, no mods and the noise is induction. He basically dismissed me as a liar and told me my exhaust has a flap that opens up by-passing the silencer. I gave up at this point. :banghead:

It wasn't a shock when I was black flagged twice and kicked off in the afternoon. :birdman:

Unbelievable Mupperty :banghead:. Surely they noise tested your exhaust's dB before letting you out ? Once that's done and within limits, they should leave U alone, induction noise or not. THANX for the warning  as I am contemplating a visit there at the end of Jan 2010 for a mate's Birthday bash.

Sounds like Bedford is "CSL unfriendly" + I think their dB noise limits are quite low to begin with anyway. Brands Hatch yesterday was very CSL friendly @ 105dB

Yes, static test was fine but they have a drive by meter on one of the straights and will black flag you if that is tripped.:bigcry:

The problem they have at Bedford is that the noise monitoring forms part of the planning permission, and as such, the monitors have a direct link to the Council Offices, and if they see that one of the monitors has been pinged they come out to the track and the track have to have a very good reason why it was pinged !! I would say that giving a CSL the beans down the back straight is a very good reason indeed !!!:hahaha:

I've done Bedford maybe a dozen times with OEM exhaust. Never had a problem. Very low static test and never pulled on driveby. Always a few CSLs there and never seen one chucked off. Indeed last month I got black flagged and came in all hey up ready to argue my case thinking it must be noise and they said it was not me but the car behind for drfting and they never have noise issues with CSLs.

Bedford do have a get out clause if the sound meters(5 of them) are triggered. You have to insist it is not you but the group of cars around you and insist they do a driveby test.

I think Ss or Miltek are a bit closer to the limit but OEM should never trip the meters. Woppum got binned with his SS full system last year but I would say 95% CSLs are fine.

By the way I don't know of any uk circuits that don't have drive by meters around the track but Bedfird limits are a bit stricter than most.

A nice new OEM back box(£665) fitted last week. From looking at the threads on here OEM seemed the way to go as most people preferred the sound if the weight not an issue.
See from Craigs strip down and Glendogs rear brake pictures that they have suffered like mine with the pipework looking good just all shit metal joints, flanges and brackets rotting away.(They all do that was the stealerships response and of course not covered on the warranty)..

To be honest I'd been to Bedford loads of times before without much issue and this one bad experience was nearly 2 years ago. I must have got them on a bad day. It's the drifting thing that pissed me off as well. I got the tail out 2 or 3 times and was black flagged for that as well.

Not my idea of fun, so haven't been since.

keep voting guys, - i cant believe 50% of CSL owners have a/m exhausts. I reckon on what i have seen around at meets and trackdays it is more like 20-25%:smokin:

I'm not surprised Shim - i think almost every CSL that i regularly see at TDs has an a/m exhaust.

So 6 of you have got SS Race Back Boxes

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/image/Intake_Exhaust/ss/044006_lg.jpg

I need to know;

1. What they sound like?
2. I need a passenger ride at full tilt
3. Have any of you done Bedford Autodrome with it?
4. What centre section and cats are you running?

I reckon the guys @ Bedford would take one look at that hanging off a CSL and wave a Black flag in your face, before U even get anywhere near the Pit straight :hahaha: :hahaha: :hahaha:

How about this for an exhaust then!!! :smokin::smokin::smokin:

Is that literally just a straight pipe from the manifold to the back box do you think?

Is this the sound I've got to look forward to on the way to work everyday if I did the same!? :hahaha::thumbs:

Shimmy, if you can hang around until the Monday TD at Cadwell this month I'll be there in mine. SS lightweight backbox with standard cats and SS silenced centre section.
