It wasn't ideal, what with it being in London, at lunchtime, in the wet! But it was still worth doing.

I was a bit concerned about the seats, what with me not being the tallest bloke in the world, and having had visibility problems with buckets seats before. But that doesn't seem to be an issue, which is good.

I'm still not 100% on SMG yet, but time will have to tell on that one.

Any one know anything about, or have any opinions on these two Nick Johnson's got?

There have been mixed reviews of his cars on both here and ph, I have no personal experience of his cars so cannot pass personal judgement.

Consider the ones for sale on here,

Hazy's is an especially nice example if black is what you are after:thumbs:

Chris,

Have no expereince of this dealer, but the cars look resonably priced for the miles.
IMO if they come with some sort of warranty, this has to be better than a private sale.

The SMG will grow on you, especially the blip on down change!!

LOL, I was exactly the same when I brought it, but after seeing all the tat the dealers were trying to sell, with the full BMW warranty, it was a no brainer really.

I disagree. Most dealers don't know very much at all (if anything) about the CSL now. Buying private you get to speak to the current owner, and get a feel for how they have treated the car, how it has been cared for etc. You pay a premium for buying form a dealer without getting that background. A BMW Warranty is key, which you can add to the car now anyway.

Do you mean you can extend the warranty if it's still got one, or you can get one put on even if it hasn't?

Yep you can now add a BM warranty on if you buy one without it:thumbs:

Really? Whoa, that changes thing a little then! :smt023

Is that a new thing? You couldn't do that a few years ago when I had BM's. Do you have to get BMW to check the car over or anything like that?

Providing it has a BMWFSH.

Chris,

Nick Johnson is a genuine csl enthusiast who happens to deal in them.
He generally stocks 3 to 5 examples so just going over to see the number of csl's in one place is almost unique in the UK.
His test drives are spot on as he lives in oxfordshire which has an abundance of leafy A roads to tear up. You do however pay a premium for nick's cars as he has to make a living.
Nonetheless i bought a 10K 04 SG from him in 2007 and the whole experience was most pleasant.

As other forum members have stated on this thread buying from a forum member can give you a "genuine history" to the car.

As long as the car has a full service history, it doesn't have to be BMW, you can extend or add one.

This was changed last year.

I added a BMW warranty to mine earlier this year.

All the details can be found here:

The service history has to be spot on, including the running in service. They will sell you one without checking the BMWSH, but as soon as you come to make a claim it will get chucked out. I nearly founfd this out the hard way, I nearly brought a car that even though it had done hardly any miles in a three year period, had missing the service every two year rule and BMW wouldnt touch it... this cut alot of cars out when I was looking, its incredible the amount of owners who missed the crucial running in sevice, one car I viewed didnt have it done till 3500 miles or so...:banghead:

yeah, course he is  He trades cars he has brought in cheaply and knows nothing about from his house for a profit, no proper premises or backup. And I guarantee he will describe all of his cars as little or no track miles......

For me, using him is pointless when you can now take advantage of the relaxed BMW warranty. It has opened the market up somewhat now.

Hazy,
You're quoting me out of context.
NJ is a csl enthusiast.Unless you count owning your own csl and doing regular nurburgring trips as being otherwise.

not at all mate. You said he was a CSL enthusiast, I say he is a dodgy car dealer pretending to be a CSL enthusiast. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.Seemples;)

I saw three cars at his place before buying mine elsewhere. One was a little tired but the other two I saw were fine. He does have decent cars in and it's a bit of a gerneralisation to say he's a dodgy dealer and most of his cars are munters. Whatever anyone says, it's great to see so many cars in one place so prospective purchasers can learn a bit more and get a feel for the cars before purchase.

Any thoughts on putting a potential car into BMW for them to give it the once over? Or is the CSL a bit to specialist for your average BMW service department?

A mate did this with a GT3 he was buying privately a couple of weeks ago and Porsche did their 111 point check and gave him a written report afterwards. (It was tip-top in case you're wondering :hahaha:)

It's all about the warranty. Different issues to consider between BMW and Porsche.

CSL - Does the CSL have the BMW Comprehensive warranty? If yes, then job done. BMW have been good at honouring their warranty, even on modified CSLs. No warranty? Buyer beware, and it's not an inconsiderable cost to you if you wanted to get a warranty.

GT3 - you need to do the 111point check to see if the car is elligible to be covered by Porsche's warranty - assuming you want to buy the warranty (if you play the wrong type of music in the car, Porsche may not honour the warranty). The 111pt check is a money collecting exercise... Porsche OPCs are not really knowledgeable enough about 996GT3s to really inform you as to the condition of the car (good/bad) unless they can sell you a policy. If you don't plan on getting the warranty, then an indie is the best way forward for GT3s.
