Hi guys,
The CSL concept car had this amazing engine cover.
Do you think we could find it, order it etc ?
Maybe a group buy + a letter to BMW AG.
If we want 50 of them, I guess they could make us 50 of these.

Thank you please

Hi,
Interesting thats its a one piece Airbox.
More power, so now you know how BMW
were able to state 360 BHP for a Stock CSL.
Regards,
The Gorilla.
Looks great.
I would be interested.

Looks very nice. A shame they never went in to production with it... i'm in two minds as to whether I would want one though... I like the standard look :hahaha: but it is damn sexy - more CF is never a bad thing

Well, I do have some relationship with BMW.
I think BMW AG knows that cars like the M3 CSL bring money to the dealers (they are tracked, they need parts oftenly, they need service oftenly etc etc).
Provided that there is a business proposal (even small like 50 carbon engine covers), it is possible that they would want to satisfy these 'special' customers that paid so much money for this car; also pay a lot of money to maintain it.
End of the day, a car like the M3 CSL is a moving advertisement for BMW AG.

I remember seeing one of these for sale on ebay.de a VERY long time ago ... the guy even had a set of prototype CSL bucket seats in half leather/M Alcantara pattern and belt guides.
I am skeptical if you really can get BMW AG to manufacture these - why not contact a decent aftermarket carbon fiber manufacturer and see if they'll do a special run??

There is probable a good reason why BMW didn't produce the rocker cover as per the prototype, more fixings than cost implications, does CF become brittle when subjected to heat? Is it oil resistant?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-e46-M3-CSL-Carbon-Fibre-Engine-Cover-/331098483188?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d1701e9f4
an example of the potential fixings issue - overtightened at a service?
However there are plenty of manufacturers currently offering S54 engine/rocker covers eg. German based CF specialists:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Cover-BMW-E46-M3-CSL-Carbon-Cam-Cover-/261300595304?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cd6baaa68
and closer to home CA Technologies:

What do you mean with oil resistant Neil ?
Also, the 320si features a full CF rocker cover (what is normally plastic on normal BMW engines or aluminium in the S54 engine).
The reason why they didn't put one is down to cost.
In the case of the 320si, they wanted to homologate it for the racing engine, so cost was not a problem.
http://www.bmwblog.com/wp-content/uploads/320si_e90_engine_front.jpg
Here the one from the Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail engine.
Carbon engine covers, carbon coil packs etc.
http://image.automobilemag.com/f/55801456+w1280+h853+q100+re0+cr1+ar0+st0/ex-GTC-Gulf-Team-Davidoff-1997-McLaren-F1-GTR-Longtail-FIA-GT-Endurance-Racing-Coupe-left-engine-compartment-1.jpg
The problem with the already offered carbon rocker covers is that quality is bad and the weight savings are minimal.
The one I want to make should be less than 400g, otherwise it's pointless to replace the original one (that's my personal opinion of course).

How much oil do you think it comes in to contact with anyway Neil?
Saving 600 grams on a lardy road car is pointless anyway. If you want to save weight just take the original one off for trackdays but anyone claiming they can notice the difference of just that saving is on such a heavy engine is deluded.

This is why Nathan is asking !
Carbon's Epoxy Resin has to be cured to the temperature it will reach in use otherwise the resin will return to its previous form ! messy, also it will change colour over time hence you see lots of Carbon engine components going a goldish colour.

Nathan, maybe we want to have a nice engine cover (like the csl concept car) and at the same time remove some weight.
I personally never saw the point of putting carbon bits without a weight saving.
So for me personally reducing the weight of this component and making it nicer is something I like.
I dont follow the deluded comment that you made
Edit: deluded are people claiming 420bhp on tuned non BMW MS S54 engines

If you want deluded power figures someone showed me a graph of an s54 with cams and vanos delete claiming 473bhp at the crank ;)
I don't see the point in just covering stuff with carbon either, but equally I don't see the point in making your engine bay look pretty, guess if you want to impress BMW assist it is ok ;)
Anyway, I was just commenting on the fact that 500g (not enough savings according to you) or 600g (enough) makes no difference when you have a bloody great lump of pig iron underneath it.

Driving a 130bhp car on drugs would feel like 473bhp. Maybe they did the power graph on an etch a sketch on a horse tranquilliser high.

Would love if Evolve or another good CF manufacturer would make one of these to flow with the OEM CSL Intake CF Weave.
