Also as reported on M3post Homepage (http://www.m3post.com/).

(thanks to Advevo for originally finding this post!)

With the E46 M3 CSL, people have been given a look into what BMW could do when it turned its direction towards lightweight and efficiency over the base M3.

With the introduction of the E92, many of you may remember all the buzz and talk about a possible E92M3 CSL. Remember the red test car (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82051)?

BMW a year later shot down those rumors (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159789)of a CSL and ruled the car out. However, today MotorAuthority has put up these new pictures of a seemingly stripped down M3, wearing racing gear and blasting around the ring. As they point out, BMW has suggested that they would put a street version of the GT4 into production (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=279613)and this could be that very car, which would in effect be a CSL. Of special interest is the fact that this car is said to be using KERS (regenerative braking systems)!.

Visit MotorAuthority to see their writeup and the full set of pictures.

KERS with a motor to power the wheels or the normal brake force regeneration as used in all other ed 3 series?

I want one either way.

Just looks like a body kit to me. I doubt they will do a CSL - they made a substantial loss with the E46 CSL.

They made a loss per car but the R&D costs for carbon roofs were all put into that project and those are now on all M cars so its a mixed bag.

Car looks like a tuners car, looks like a KW logo on the boot.

Interesting pic tho, there obviously having a play with some things, so could be a sign of possibly something in the water I guess, it would look pretty std I guess so as not to attract exactly this type of attention at this stage ...

Would NOT sell my E46 ... but WOULD buy one ... end

Remember that conversation with the BMW test driver at Ring in July Daz? He said definately not. But, you never know I guess. :smt102

Think I agree with John, looks a bit like a tuner testing some stuff.

Either way, I also wouldn't sell my CSL to buy one. Might shop in the 335i though. (don't tell the Mrs......)

I spoke to a test driver myself and he said as far as i knew it wouldn't happen.

What is that spoiler all about? I didn't think the GT4 M3 had one full stop...

I partially agree. But according to other sources the wheels used is identical to the recently spotted 1 series coupe lightweight/competition (tii perhaps)

The F20 will debut (3/5 door hatch) 18 months before the current coupe is sent out to pasture- this will be a performance edition to keep the interest up and current (much like the ZHP on the E46).

This will be a CSL like car- not badged CSL (possibly Csi or tii). This will preview the Super Sports edition that will be introduced in the next generation and be the high end coupe model.

The performance and lightweight components on this car will not be options on "regular" models and will not be based on BMW Performance accessories.

Testing currently is a CF roof, hood, and trunk- Special lightweight (BBS) wheels, new highly bolstered seats and Light Weight glass. Engine is still TBA and in testing.

I spoke to a test driver myself and he said as far as i knew it wouldn't happen.

That isn't a standard FIA GT4 car though, and the wheels look like e46 CSL wheels to me?

No, defo not a GT4 there! I watch enough of it on Men and Motors, they are basically stock cars...

They are definately not E46 CSL wheels. Look at how the spokes meet the rim. Spokes are also thinner.

There are a variety of E90 M3 race cars out there, the GT4 is very standard and thats what BMW want to base the customer cars on. I think they need to go further.

IMO it can only mean good things to come for the BMW brand. I'm still not fully liking the new M3's shape but it is growing on me...
