As you may or may not know I have bought a standard m3 track slag, and having never caged a car before i have a few questions.....
Where is best place/cage etc to have fitted?
Which is best for just track days, bolt in or weld in?
What type of costs am I looking at, both just supplied, and supplied/fitted?
Many thanks:thumbs:
Custom cages do some lovely work but you're looking at £3K fitted, or a little under £1K supplied with all parts and you weld in. Go have a gander at their website.
As for boltin / welded. Boltin will still need welded fixing plates to work properly so you might as well just do a proper weld in jobbie - unless you intend to turn it back into a road car one day?
Cheers,
Jeff

Pretty sure that is a custom cages one.
Certainly looks like that base even if they have added some extra bars. Their website quotes it as an FIA cage - pretty sure they wouldn't have gone to the expense of homologation on their own design?
Money no object I'd have a chat with Torquespeed, having seen their e46s up close they are awesome.

Hi,
Interesting this thread of how people wanting
to build a Track or Race Car evaluate the
Roll Cage.
The Cage in my car was fitted by the previous
owner, and it would not have been my first
or second choice.
Roll Cages, is like all Motorsport, how much do
you want to spend ?
Why, simple, the best power gains for money spent is
weight saving. Because it always performs no matter what.
So, go to a weld in 6/8 point weld in multi point cage for a
E46 Coupe and with front turrets and door bars at say
CDS 1.8mm S/W on 40/45 mm ID Tube pay say around 2/2,5k
fitted and add around 60/70 Kgs min in weight.
Same spec in T45 around 20% lighter and more like 3k
plus, fitted for a proper job.
Then go same spec Chromoloy at 1.2mm S/W on 40mm ID Tube save around 40% or so, about 25/30 kg lighter but nearer 4-5k in beer tokens.
Then go to Chromoloy with Ti added and get near to 25kgs all in and pay
around 7-10k pending on spec.
Now at around 0.27 kg per BHP based on a S54 CSL at 360 [which
I have never believed] then the Cage alone is 10 BHP power to weight
over a CDS Caged car. Might not look much on paper, but how much
do you really have to spend on a CSL to gain a true 10 BHP ?
That's why the Guys that did the Superchargerd CSL Ring lap at 7.22
went for a Bolt in Cage, weight saving.
Porsche GT2 / 3 Carbon Fibre Cage 12,000 euro, weight loss never
comes cheap just ask my my ex-wife, I cut here legs off !!!
Regards,
The Gorilla.

I'll put a few posts up tomorrow answering a few questions but it certainly isn't a Custom Cages one, indeed Roger copied our design when we looked for cheaper version of our cage and didn't even credit us. I will NEVER go to custom cages again, ever. Thes eare our own design cages.

Fair enough, I guess any cage built to the 2004 int regs will look similar anyway. Sorry.

all credit to you for the way it held together in the crash mate.
