Folks
Finally managed to get my video online from race 2. Some may not be aware but I had to end qualifying early due to gearbox problems, and after resetting the box on Sunday morning we discovered it wouldn't go into gears 2, 4 and 6 :banghead:
I missed race 1 but managed to cobble the car together for race 2, albeit with a shakey gearbox. I started from the back of the grid, and you can hear the gearbox problems throughout the video, particularly on the back straight :bigcry:
I setup two video cameras for this last race, one facing backwards, so I've combined the two vids into this one. It starts to get very slightly out of sync the further into the video you go, but you'll get the idea
Sorry for the poor driving - combination of me hating high speed circuits and not really being focussed with the gearbox problems mean its a bit crap. But still, a CSL video is always a good sound :smt055

Excellent video Steve. Such a pity that box is playing up. Manual box for next season?

The CSL gearbox is great for trackdays, but it can't handle consistantly hard racing laps - great shame.

Be interested to know if you have any gearbox oil cooling mods Steve?

It was a great weekend so I can't really complain - good weather and good company. Daz was a magic host - I thought it was really funny when Rich left his room key on the table and told the waitress he'd left it for her :hahaha:

I ended up double shifting into 6th quite often. You don't have a spare gearbox now Curly? ;)

I was considering that, but John Thorne was telling me there's all sorts of problems converting a CSL to manual, regarding the wiring loom etc :bigcry:

The datalogger's not working for some reason, I've not managed to log all season. I'll try and get it properly sorted and working over the winter!
Corner speeds = too slow
Straight line speeds = too slow
Pit Entry Speed = perfect

Thanks Nathan :)

To be fair there are others racing who have had no (or next to no) problems at all. My problems have all started at the ring - and what happens? I put in a brand new box in May, and everything is fine but then at the ring in August it starts crunching from 3rd to 4th again.

Nope, but considering this, and also changing the oil used in the box. I'm not sure if its the gearbox oil, or the SMG fluid that needs cooling?

I am surprised at how much of a handful your car looks compared to ours, you seem to have to wrestle it through the corners. Clearly works for you as the lap times show, but I reckon it would have me off at the first corner!
The SMG on Nathans lasted for an hour and a half of racing at Snetterton before it started messing about - I think he ran cooling to the SMG gubbins. There should be no reason that SMG couldnt cope with a 20 min race?

Even when it did start playing up it was nowhere near as bad as that.
Fingers crossed you get it sorted.

Disagree, mine has run all year without issues. The issue we had woith the paddles was simple wiring, the gb itself is very strong. Steve has som sever issues hat need to be identified though.

its doable but expensive and time consuming. I rekon fix the problem, as I'm 00% confiden that it can be fixe.

Dodgy keyboard or Morphine kicking in? :blalalala:
I'd say it should be fixable too, if all the mechanical bits have been changed then start looking at the electronic side of things?

Isn't Nathan's CSL now a somewhat 'de-tuned' powered version of a CSL...?

Get well soon btw John! :smt056

Yeah, but it will still do a 1:17.6 round Snett, even though its missing 30bhp.;)
It's much easier to drive;

We found that if we set it up with a sharp front end it became undrivable as the tyres wore out, so it has a slight bit of understeer built in. I think we also run wider front tyres than the CSL Cup cars.
I was just quite surprised at how much Steve had to work the steering through the corners.

i would tend to disagree in as much as not many cars gearboxes can stand torture for track or race. most disintegrate with driver error (wrong gear and missed clutch) but the CSL SMG has neither of those but sometimes can go wrong
in other words it is not faultless but it does rule out driver error and damage which at the end of the year can help
most race cars gearboxes are consumables esp with bigger bhp and need rebuilds.
