View Full Version : LG53 UMT History
Hi, does anyone know LG53 UMT? I'm potentially going to have a nose around this car at the weekend to see if it's worth buying and wondered if anyone knew the car and had any history / thoughts on it?? Ta.

LOL I don't think tex was expecting the current owner to answer :smt001
Cool! That is quite funny!
Is there any reason I shouldn't buy her when you bring her in to the dealer on Friday?? Any thing I should know, any good negotiation points? I believe you owned it for 4 years ish, did you have any problems?
Basically you know what I am getting at... any reasons I shouldn't buy?
I was told you are swapping for an M5... nice!

If I am reading this right, Oxford English is p/x his CSL at a Stealer for an M5, and Tex is thinking of buying said CSL from the Stealer......
Now the Stealer is going to be making a profit on the re-sale of the CSL, would there be any benefit for Tex & Oxford English to deal direct? Or is it too late?
Tex pays less than the Stealer is asking, & Oxford English gets more than the p/x value? A win/win (except for the Stealer:whistle:).

Sorry for the delay in replying, for some reason I'm unable to login from work...
It sounds like you’ve already got a bit of info on the car, I’ve owned it for two and half years and it’s been pretty much my daily driver to and from the five miles to work for most of that period. As you know it’s in the best (and fastest colour, ask Shimmy) I’m the third owner, it’s got full CSL options, Xenons, PDC, air con, stereo plus the commemorative plaque and special alcantara / leather document pouch. It also has the bonus of an official BMW iPod connection in the glove box.
In my opinion the condition of the car, especially the interior, is very good considering age, mileage and the fact it’s used daily, there’s just a small nick in the foam trim to the underside of the driver’s door, the sill plates are as new and I’ve used the rear seats maybe half a dozen time since buying her. The front does have some stone chips, but so does the M5 I’m swapping it for - personally it wouldn’t worry me, one of the front wheels is kerbed too, it should be repairable though. The first owner added tints to the side and rear window along with M Power stickers on the rear quarters. There is also a Milltek exhaust and centre pipe on the car, this was fitted by the first owner and supposedly has the benefit of an extra 10-12 bhp, I’ve not had the car dyno’d so can’t confirm either way but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the performance, especially on track.
Mechanically it’s been excellent, one thing to keep on top of is the geo setup and tracking as it transforms the car, as does using MTrack mode, I rarely drive it without it switched on, the sooner you get used to it the better in my opinion, the default traction control is far too nannying under dry / normal conditions. I have used it on track as did the previous owners, don’t let that put you off, its where the car belongs and frankly if you’re not going to track it you need your head testing, there is absolutely nothing else for the money (or double) that compares.
At the moment, the car requires an Inspection II (due in 100 miles, lucky for me) rear pads and possibly the handbrake tightening up, there are no other mechanical issues I’m aware of.
I think it’ll make a great car for someone who’ll do maybe 5-6k miles per year like I have, it’s got nearly new P Zero Nero’s all round that haven’t been tracked and are about a thousand miles old, as part of the AUC deal it’ll have the Inspection II done and the pads sorted at the very least. In fairness to Sytner, they’ve given me an excellent trade in, moved quite a lot on the price of the M5, sorted a competitive finance deal for me and delivered excellent customer service, including bring the M5 up to my house for a local test drive. I don’t have any idea what price they’ll retail it back out of, but just bear in mind that it’s going to cost them a fair chunk of cash to perform the Inspection II, prepare and warranty the car.
In short this is probably been the best drivers car that I’ll ever own, and even now before I’ve parted company with it I pretty much know that once I’ve got the V10 bug out of my system I will have another in the future. I’m honestly gutted to be losing her but I’ve simply not been using her often enough as god intended and even now I still can’t believe that I’m actually going through with the deal, I only called in at the weekend for a quick look!
One word of warning, if you view it tomorrow please don’t be put off by the grubby exterior, I have arthritis and haven’t been able to clean it for the last couple of weeks - I won’t let anyone else touch her.
Rob
PS, the first owner traded her in for a V10 M5, the second for a V10 M6, can you see where this is leading J ....

Ditto for me, in fact some of you will be very surprised by the amount they are PX'ing for...

Rob,
Many, many thanks for your thoughts. It makes an absolutely massive difference to hear from you and get a feel for the car.
Whilst I can assess the deal for me and say whether I am financially happy, it's utimately down to the car. It sounds like you havelooked after it and enjoyed it, so it makes me much more comfortable.
This is a car that will be my everyday car and I will be doing quite a lot more miles than you did - 30 miles each way on the M1 (but with some good long cuts), but I can't see why the car won't cope.
What's the exhaust like - given the miles I am doing I don't want too much noise. I took out a std CSL and it was absolutely fine at the cruise on the motorway - does yours drone / resonate?? Does it have an impact on the warranty?
Sorry to pester you, any help much appreciated!
If everything goes through I'll buy you a beer to compensate - we seem to be nearly neighbours!
Cheers
Tex

Hi Tex, glad to be of help, unfortunately the mk1 Milltek is infamous for having an annoying drone, its round the 2600rpm mark but disappears just before 3000rpm, cruising at 60mph in 6th gear can grate...
I did look at changing back to standard but just never got around to it, off the top of my head I think the standard back box is around £550, they sometimes appear on here or ebay for around the £150 mark.
The flipside is that it sounds bloody awesome at full chat  It has a far deeper V8'ish bellow. As for warranty I'm not sure, the car was sold to me with it fitted, Sytner's are aware of its presence and I have a copy of the original invoice from when Coopers fitted it for the first owner (I thought that was a bit naughty of them to pass it on to me..)

My car has had several warranty jobs done recently and my car is modified. They generally honour warranty stuff so long as it's not caused by, or related to the mods...
Ditto for me, in fact some of you will be very surprised by the amount they are PX'ing for...
yup some deals can be very sweet indeed..i have to say when i bought my CSL 2 years ago the PX they gave my was to good to miss. i was offerd more than i paid for the car 18 months before - which if i am not mistaken made me the first person in history to break even on an Alfa :hahaha:....shit i said the words out loud Alfa....Alfa.....

I had an exhaust bracket replaced on mine under warranty a couple of months ago and I've got a Milltek. So, normally the modifications don't seem to bother them.

my Milltek gave me a headache when commuting/on the motorway and I took it off but they sound epic when your ripping the tarmac up. Radders car had 100 cell race cats too (I think Lawsy had them) and the only thing I have heard better is my Strad
Thanks for all the responses. I'm off to view the car on Sunday so I'll have a good listen and see for myself. I blow hot and cold about after market exhausts - I had a Tubi on a Maser and it was very boomy, a Larini on the same car was a good balance. The BMW performance one on my 335i sounds like a cow farting and is far too chavvy for the look of the car...
Are you enjoying the M5 Rob??? Happy to have swapped?
I have supersprint 100 cell and latest version miltek. The latest miltek has moved the resonance point up to around 3000rpm now, exactly 70mph in 6th - causes me to speed by 10mph every time on the motorway :)

I never really took much notice of the lower speedo numbers :supz:

Yeah, its a great car, apples and oranges of course. Drove back to Derby from collecting her up Friday morning, picked up the missus and my two collies then headed over to Anglesey for the weekend, managed 20ish mpg all weekend and never needed to touch the special M button
Excellent, glad you are happy. I signed on the dotted line on Sunday, the cars in for prep and I can't wait! It was all as you said and it drove great. Well happy! Only concern is how noisy the exhaust is going to be on my motorway commute... but I can wait and see.
Did you take the fun route to Anglesey or the dog / other half friendly route? Also did it rain and blow a gail - it always appears to on Anglesey, we go over to Ty Croes every July for a weekend of racing with a group of friends - always chuffing freezing!
I'm currently pondering over whether to have gap insurance... never even considered it in the past but they argue it's such a rare car it will be under valued by any insurance assessors should it be written off or stolen... anyone got any experience thoughts on that one?

Congrats on your new car
I have the full Milltek and a 4.10 diff and i find that aslong as i keep the revs above 3000rpm the drone is gone and at motorway cruising speeds on a stock diff in 6th your over that so no problem.

Congratulations Tex, gotta say I’ve still got mixed emotions about letting her go, but hey-ho, I can still get another in a couple of years.
I took the missus friendly route I’m afraid, A50 > M6 > A55, still a pleasant drive nonetheless and good for the mpg. I was hoping to get across to Snowdonia but we ended up exploring most of Anglesey for the weekend.
The doggies loved daddies new car ☺

I think with the CSL it's probably worth having GAP / RTI cover, most underwriters won't understand the true value of them and I suspect would lump them in with a standard e46 M3 when settling a claim. I took cover out with Sytner's for the M5, £400 for 4 years which seems to be quite reasonable.
Well, i pick her up tomorrow and I am more than a little bit excited!
Remains to be seen what my "better half thinks". I've not quire fully described the csl... it'll be fine ;).
I'll be happy no matter what and I'm now planning a test route for tomorrow on the way home from Sytner through the back lanes of North Leicestershire and South Derbyshire.
Nice dogs... my family had a border collie when i was growing up... completely mad!

Well four and a half months later, the very first CSL I see on the road since leaving her at Sytners was my old car :bigcry:
Was that you this morning Tex? Driving through Willington near to the A38/A50 island, good to see you had the windows down to enjoy he sound, even the missus said it still looked smart
Hi, yep that was me... and yes I had the window down and the sport button pressed, one day I'll grow up. Perhaps. Still loving it - a really great car.
How is the M5, still enjoying it?
