View Full Version : Clutch engagement problem

Had my car at the dealers yesterday about my clutch / SMG being funny.

When driving (its worse when cold) and Im crusing up through the gears - being sensible - everytime I change gear its as if its not engaging right and it takes a couple of goes to find the gear. It clunks in and out. It does the exact same on downshifts and just cant seem to find the gear.

Last week the telltale light (cog with ! in middle) came on but disappeared once I switched the car back off.

The dealer cant find any problems with it whatsover, so Im needing some ideas to throw at them.

I also pointed out my drive shaft seem to have excessive play in it, result is a new final drive :supz: Finally justified my extended warranty.

I drove Bryce's car and tried to get it to do it as he described and although I think I got it once, not as bad as he's describing there.

Did you notice a big difference after you drove mine? Or did you not give it enough Beans?

Result with the diff though, sweet.

Yours was spot on Baz, felt fine.

It does get alot better once the car is up to temp though. Its mainly before the oil is up to 75c +.

Just a wee update

Car seemed to get worse and worse (prob with colder weather) til the point where I wouldnt drive it as I didnt trust it to get me across carriageways etc. Had it in at two dealers around 5/6 times. They run diagnostics and reprogrammed bits and bobs but it made no difference.

Finally, with a bit of moaning and groaning they granted my wishes. A brand new gear box  So thats me had a new final drive (diff) and gear box. Well chuffed! Oh, and it fixed the problem ;)

Bet it was probably just a snapped spring in the gearbox;)

The dealers are fucking hopeless, all very well if warranty are paying but what if its customers paying.:banghead:

Ive read from a few people now having very very similar problems to yourself but with no warranty, dealers diagnosed a new gearbox required at cost of a good few thousand plus fitting. They all turned out to be a couple of £ spring on side of box which takes a couple of hours max to change.

Glad you got it sorted mate, sometimes it's the good old fashioned mechanical bits that go wrong instead of all the fancy technology and software they piss around with!

How much would a new CSL gearbox have been if you didn't have warranty then!?

I was told 4k when mine went on my SMG M3, it ended up to be a dodgy connection from the selector to the box, the connector and wire had melted. I bought a 2nd hand box and got an indy to change it. I asked them to keep the old bits, I was fuming when I went to pick it up and saw the obvious damage :banghead:

I'd have gone simply mental mate! :bigcry: :banghead:

my car is in for a new clutch (gearbox is only 2 years and 20k miles old) but is it worth getting this/these springs changed whilst it is there?

Hi,

Shimmy-

''my car is in for a new clutch (gearbox is only 2 years and 20k miles old) but is it worth getting this/these springs changed whilst it is there?''

Simple Yes.

I was looking into the effects of what
uprating these springs would have on
the SMG/Clutch/Gearbox change pattern
and if they were say on the stiffer side
would this start problems with the
solenoids and the Gearbox Acctuators.

The Gorilla.

Done, ordered 2 new springs to be installed as they have to take out gearbox to replace clutch

Also ordered a salmon relay for SMG as a spare:thumbs:
